In the early 1980's, Ronald Reagan appointed Peter Grace to head a commission charged with doing an analysis of governement waste, duplication and how it can be made more efficient. The submitted report was outstanding and suggested the possibility of saving over a trillion dollars by the year 2000! Obviously, Congress had no heart in implementing any of the suggestions and the report went from the cocktail table to the trash.

I think President Obama should seriously consider appointing a similar commission, maybe populated by people with impeccable credentials like a Warren Buffet, Wilbur Ross or Jack Welch. Obama still has the pulpit and might be in a better position to rein in any backlash from a Pelosi and Reid..or a Boehner/ It would not cost a penny, and, in my opinion, could start to bring back the public confidence in government so lacking these days.

Obama just signed a bill authorzing the spending of nearly 1 trillion dollars. He has no interest in worring about waste as billions of this money will no doubt be stolen, misused and wasted..

Economics is a tricky beast.

This is a buyers market. You overspend now. I don't know why people have such difficulty with that. You pay a lot to re-kick things into gear. It's the way it is, and has to be.

The problem is spending way too much in times when the economy is not crumbling.

I know that sounds contradictory because most of us spend in big scales. But companies and big businesses (or big infrastructure like governments) are very used to and very comfortable with getting billions in debt in order to make a huge upswing in the positive direction.

How about instead, an amendment that creates a small department that does this on an annual basis. In the Amendment make it so that it must be released publically by a certain time.

I need to research whatever happened to that balanced budget amendment from long ago.

That's a good idea, in theory. But we can see how it was not put into practice by RR. I doubt we would get any different results with Obama.
