So let's have a discussion about "racial matters." Our new attorney general has sent out the call, and we should all stand up and take notice. Otherwise, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton may soon be out of work. We have to keep this fight against racism perpetual.

This isn't simply an American thing. Human Nature compels us to group, and at that we group with the pack we are most comfortable. Competition is also a natural condition, this competition moves us to think we're better than someone that is different. It is the strife of political correctness that has us avoiding the issues that divide us as men. And yes I understand that there are more racial groupings out there than simply black and white, but this isn't Eskimo History Month. Until American white men can forget that the south is gonna rise again and the black man can drop the idea that he was enslaved by all white men (it might behoove us to remember that it was also the white man that was his liberator) we will have racial tention. I did love Whoopie's comment about being able to unpack her suitcase now. But each man must judge each man on his individual merit. I also believe it is important that Americans stop viewing themselves based on the historical origin and start establishing our own identity as Americans, simply Americans. Our present Home Stone is the only one that should matter or hold our allegiance. Somewhere it was said, United We Stand!!! That isn't just a geographical reference.

Kittin, he has a point to a degree. I'm being a tad sarcastic, because I don't see what his comments have to do with the job of Attorney General. I don't see it as being a vitally important issue either. Yes we tend to live and socialize with our own race. Yes, we have completely different conversations with members of our own race than we do with member of other races. I know I do, and I'll admit it. In this thread, I'd be perfectly willing to discuss some of those issues.

I don't think he has a point at all. I think he's an asshole! How's that for a discussion? What U.S. Citizens do with their time or on the weekends is none of his God Damn business! I think we should end all of those "Affirmative Action" programs, let's see if he'd like to have a little "chat" about that! Evidently he thinks that it's the government's "job" to try to tell the American People what to do. It isn't!

Popeye, I'm with you on ending affirmative action programs. I think he's baiting people too (specifically white people). I've heard this assertion from blacks before. We (meaning white people) aren't honest about their views of other races. Honestly, there is a bit of truth to that. But that's what happens when you turn any white person into a social pariah for uttering anything considered remotely offensive.

I am compleatly weird. I enjoy being the race that I am... but I dont thinks it any better than any other race. I also dont really view any differences in the workplace as far as race is concerned. It is true that all my friends are the same race as myself however I never really conciously thought that that is why picked them and I have never knowingly excluded someone on the basis of race as far as friendship is concerned. I have never had sex with a woman of a different race but that has just been a matter of opertunity or lack of. I think it would be difficult for me to really come up with a good racial conversation without it just being totaly stupid and based on stuff from past history.

Just to clarify:This is directed at the original post, pertaining to the mentally ill government official. Yawn, someone thinking racism is the center of the universe. You know I can't think of the last time I had any personal conflict with a person of another race. True, I live in an area that is well over 90 percent white, but since I was in school have I had any real conflict with any person of a different race. NO. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the harping on racism all the time, just keeps the racists racists and creates a whole new generation of people with racism on the brain. Who fucking cares anymore, You know why don't we have a new experiment and instead of trying to talk about racism all the time, just fucking shut up. It would be wonderful, and people wouldn't always be exposed to the thinking that puts people into groups, and segments, and we could talk about individuals. No, we got to keep racism alive in this country by blaming everything possible on it, and instilling the concept of grouping by color as an important metric into the next generation. This is why humans suck so much, they just don't get it. Anyone harping about racism all the time, promotes as much if not more than the KKK, as they are promoting false classifications and treating them like they are a valid criteria for treating groups differently. LOL. There are plenty of ways to address societal problems by judging individual experiences without the need for race to ever be involved as a determining factor.

About the only thing I could even guess that the AG is referring to is that now that we are into the social aspects of race is that too much about race is allowed to slide. He is correct but I am betting it is a discussion he *doesn't* want to have. The problem with that is that there is the ever-present double standard when an Imus can be fired and marginalized commercially and socially when saying essentially the same things rappers have been saying for years and how black comedians make themselves rich by playing upon racial prejudices in their 'comedy' and dialogue. A dialogue that for the old civil rights leaders about which they should be disgusted or...turning in their graves. Some of the language of the day such as the AG may think shows a cowardice is the langauge of that double standard and may just be one of the first things he'd argue...doesn't exist. So who is and isn't the coward ?

Never fear popeye, and others....we only have an Equal Rights Act, not an Equal Rights Amendment...so for all intents and purposes...equal rights aren't that big a deal to many Americans. i wonder though, in say 2042 http://www.thebusinessedition.com/hispanics-to-form-majority-in-us-population-by-2042-1284/ when whites may no longer be the majority in this country....will the idea of Affirmative Action and quotas to protect the rights of minorites become somehow more palatable?

Bullshit. I get so sick of hearing that. Hispanic isn't a race, it includes a large percentage of caucasians. Even if you include white Hispanics, they still only make up 30% of the estimated population in 2042. "Whites" which is any person of European decent without a Spanish surname will still make up 42% of the population. You only make whites a minority, when you combine Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks together. Seperated, whites still make up the largest group.

You're correct that Hispanic isn't a race, but Latinos aren't Caucasians....they are a mix of races, largely descendants of Native-Americans that mixed often with white, and commonly African Americans. Es Verdad....lo siento. edited to add....if you read the link i included...it was including Blacks and Asians....i wan't trying to mislead or bullshit anyone.

People have always naturally segregated themselves. Israel has even institutionalized it, with that (Berlin-esque) Wall they've put up in Jerusalem to keep the Palestinians on their 'side of the tracks'. That little thing called the U.N. has condemned Israel for it, but who does the U.N. think they are to come in and start calling the Israelis a bunch of cowards for their segregationist governmental policy? As for the attorney general, when people don't drone on about racial differences and force the conversation everywhere they go, I call that, class. I wonder what the attorney general would say if Mr. Obama broke out with something about "whitey" or "the honkies". Perhaps Bill Clinton and Dick Cheney should go on Jay Leno and start a conversation about the "spics, jews and niggers". Is that what he's looking for?

Racism and cultural recognition are not the same, but they do help to support each other. I agree with the Attorney General. Most people act like they did in the 1950's, see "Gentlemens' Agreement". That movie and its' title epitomize my experience of this wonderful phenomena in MA, CA, NY, FL and CT. Really, watch the dinner scene, watch the little boy who only lives if for a few months. Racism has not died, has barely lessened and is a social taboo to discuss. I was at the dentists office three weeks ago. They are on the edge of China town, Boston. An Italian dick head was standing there bitching about the fact that there were signs in Chinese. He was actually ignorant enough to bitch about the Chinese people coming in in storage containers. How this was some fun trip for them. In a waiting room with about 25 people in it, I turned and said "This is great, I come all the way back to MA and what do I meet, overt racism. Have you ever considered that the Chinese people that are shipped in those storage containers usually ended up as virtual slaves. They give up everything in the hope that they might find a decent life and you're bitching because they don't instantly speak English. Wonderful. My dentist rescued me from the crushing silence of Asians, Blacks and whites. But I did get the dick head to shut up. I have made it a practice (blatantly stealing the idea from "Gentlemens' Agreement") to speak up every time. When people used to talk about ordering lunch and said they wanted chink food, I immediately said, I'm part Asian. I said that to my boss, by the way. He actually gave me one of my best reference letters a few years later when I left. When people called someone a guinea, I jump right in as an Italian. Same for spic, nigger, and on one memorable occasion as white. Most people shut the fuck up. I know I've met the real deal racist when they open their mouths because no one has ever opened their mouth except to spout racist slurs. They follow, exactly, the formula from the movie. I get pulled aside later and told how brave I was. Or how rude. It is of course, inappropriate to say things overtly. Everyone really means it in a good way. Bite me. Oh my god, I just read the other posts. Please include me in the people you never speak to .

Es Verdad....lo siento. No you didn't hit a nerve. You're just incorrect. Latinos of mostly Spanish decent are Caucasians, and not all Latinos are descendants of Native Americans and blacks. I have news for you, a lot of western European whites have native-American ancestory as well. However, wee don't get a different racial classification. We should do away with all of those racial classifications, because they are inaccurate. I won't answer the question on job applications or government forms.
