There is bad news regarding the supply lines as the U.S. prepares to send more troops into Afghanistan and the Taleban situation in Pakistan intensifies.  Russia sent $2 million in aid and the Kyrgyzstan government agreed to the request.

"BISHKEK (Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan's parliament voted on Thursday to close the only U.S. air base in Central Asia, removing one of the U.S. military's supply routes into Afghanistan as it prepares to send more troops.

The United States also faced reluctance from its NATO allies to provide more soldiers to complement the extra 17,000 troops it is sending to Afghanistan to tackle the Taliban insurgency."

My guess is it won't happen.

Just an extortion attempt by Kyrgrzstan that our government will eventually cave in to.

Good. I didn't vote for Obama so he could continue the failed Bushevik schemes. Somewhere around here there's a thread on "Military Keynesianism" which is the real reason the US is so fucked right now. Over half of our GDP and most of the borrowing went to the military-industrial complex, which is the biggest pork barrel the world has ever seen, by far.

I think the NATO allies are a figment of someone's imagination.  Their definition of being an Allie of the U.S. is have the United States watch their back in troubled times, and have the Unitd States shed the blood of its children on battlefields withhout their help.  Rather than these idiotic discussions about closing Gitmo..we should close our bases in Europe and bring our troops home...maybe put them on the borders to PROTECT AMERICA!..not ungrateful europeans.  Further, why do we need to keep 30,000 troops in South Korea...a country that can handle it's own defense these days.  Japan too...should see an exit of U.S. troops.
We have enough  firepower in the sky, on sea, and under the sea to destroy any country that threatens the homeland.  Bring the troops home..and let our "allies" pay their share of their own defense.

I don't think the number you cite of "half of our GDP" went to the military-industrial complex".
I think you might be off by ..... about ten times or more.  I might be wrong, but I believe the defense budget represents about 4-5% of GDP. versus closer to 1% for Japan..and not much more for most of Europe where I don't think anyone spends as much as 2%.  As far as "most of the borrowing" going to the military-industrial complex, again, correct me if I am wrong, but that sounds like "double counting" to me since the government "borrows" to pay for expenditures....so that money is already counted in the budget.

However, it could be how economics is taught at college these days by liberal, anti-military professors molding the minds of young kids to believe anything coming from their elequent lips.  Just look at how many young ones were mesmerized by the elequence of Barack Obama and really believe that he signed a Stimulus Bill..marching unthinking robots, like army ants following the pheromone odor of the ant in front of them.

Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

It’s a simple fact that our NATO allies after the cold war basically stopped funding their military.
They can’t function as well as we can and at times just get in the way.

Japan has potential and there leaders often want to do more but are prevented by their constitution from having an offensive military.
US military spending.

I say, "Great!"  Let's close all of our overseas bases and let the rest of the world take care of itself.  We are not the world's policeman nor even their hall monitor.  We can use our troops to secure our borders and control immigration into this country.

We agree on something. And, we are going to have to protect our southern borders when that civil war flows over.
