Sanity -> Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 3:38:34 PM)

quote:

NEW YORK – An important psychological barrier gave way on Wall Street Thursday as the Dow Jones industrials fell to their lowest level in more than six years. The Dow broke through a bottom reached in November, pulled down by sharp declines in key financial shares. It was the lowest ending for the Dow since Oct. 9, 2002, when the last bear market bottomed out.

The move below that level dashed hopes that the doldrums of November would mark the ending point of a long slump in the market, which is now nearly halfway below the peak levels reached in October 2007.

The market's inability to rally signals that investors see no immediate end for the recession, which is already 14 months old and one of the most severe in decades. Investors also haven't been impressed with two major economic initiatives from the Obama administration this week, an economic stimulus package and a mortgage relief plan.

"It is definitely, definitely a blow to psychology," said Quincy Krosby, chief investment strategist at The Hartford, referring to the Dow's finish. "There is more pessimism in the market as to when the economy is going to pick up steam."

Yea.. I saw that video and actually also posted it on another thread about the coming civil war in this country.  The market has given it's uncensored verdict on the "Stimulus Spending Package" that the democrats put over on the taxpayers of this country...and we are on our way towards a very deep recession that even building a high speed rail link between Disneyland and Las Vegas won't help.  The people that raise their hands in adoration and supplication to Barack Obama are truly the biggest indictment of our educational system one can imagine.

It is amazing how ideology blinds people to fact...how amazing that people will overlook the biggest ponzi scheme perpetrated on the human race with this bill, and just bend over and say "Please...more...Please"!!

Is anyone truly sleeping well these days knowing  that people like a Pelosi, Reid, Obama, in order of importance, are holding the purse strings of the country...along with Rangel, Waters, Waxman and Leahy...My guess is probably..yes they are, if they are part of the have not kooky ultra left that is running the democrat party into the ground.

Thank you for the news update. Living here in the underdeveloped nation-state of Atlanta, where indoor plumbing is only for the very wealthy and the telegraph is still our main means of communication, we don't get much news of the outside world.

Let me take a moment to understand your post. The fact that the economic reports that came out today indicated that we now have 5,0000,000 people unemployed (obviously slackers wishing to live high on the government tit at the taxpayer's expense), that the gdp is forecast to shrink even further than previously reported and the financial sector, in shambles after eight years of government approved fiscal irresponsibility has nothing to do with this. It is all due to the 30 day old Obama administration. Is that the point you're trying to expound?

Is it also your contention that if there had been no stimulous package or perhaps another TARP style giviaway to the very CEO's who helpped the economy melt down so ably, that we would be experiencing a resurgence in our economic fortunes? Or perhaps if they just allowed the "market discipline" (a comment very firmly shown to be in the oxymoronic category of jumbo shrimp or millitary intelligence) to take it's course, by now we would have been rolling in clover?

If this is your belief, I have some forclosed swampland in Florida I'd very much like to talk about selling you.

subfever -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 5:29:42 PM)

So what else is new? The right continues to blame the left, and the left continues to blame the right. You see it here and elsewhere daily.

Meanwhile, the PTB continues doing whatever the hell it wants to do, snickering at the sheeple.

Think of the sheeple as marionette puppets, and the PTB as the Grand Puppeteer.

pathetic sychophantic whine. you unabashedly belong to the party that takes your money, lies to your face about what it's platform is and how much it will DO FOR YOU and in the same breath calls you scum because you are broke - no money losers and doesn't hesitate to screw you....... the party of the same people that refused to vote on the package - Guess who is raping the stock market and deliberately trying to make things worse? ... YOUR PALS

Uh No - not me...... I don't belong to any recognized political party in this country. I'm a 2nd generation American / 3rd generation Anarchist and damned proud of it.

Can you be a little more specific? Are you talking about the republicans or the democrats?

kittinSol -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 5:44:40 PM)

It sounds like he's describing the Republicans to me, but then again, I'm bias, not so much because I'm in favour of the Dems; more because I'm so against the Reps [8D] .

The stock market has been reflecting the tough economic times for a year!  In fact, since the "Dear Leader" was elected it's down over 2000 points!  What the market is telling ME, if not you, is that after reviewing what the democrat party sees as its priority is social change and pork....while the country is in the midst of a deep recession.  The parallel to 1929 is that the country was going into a deep recession, as we are today, but stupid government actions put us into a depression that we did not come out of until WW2.  The market is saying that the pork in this Bill, the waste of almost a trillion dollars, is going to do more harm than good.  The Congressional Budget Office which is Pelosi's own economic team said that the country would be better off in ten years withhout this spending package.
The market that sees Obama following up the spending legislation with a "save the losers home" project that will keep the guy down your street who purchased more house than he could afford whole, cut his principle and interest payments, and YOU will be paying for it...The market doesn't like that kind of spending either.

The market sees an administration led by an amatuer that is way over his head, and only knows how to campaign and pose for photo ops. The market has reflects the lack of confidence in this man who came out of nowhere, a man that was never fully vetted by the media as so many others, who has an anti-business, class warfare agenda.  Not change, but "same old. same old" democrat poltics.

Gold has been on a tear....while the equity market continues in the doldrums.Don't listen to a neocon like me...listen to the ticker...it tells the truth with respect to the consensus of the people.  It's a gallup poll but not with a lousy 1,000 or so respondants..but milions of people and hundreds of billions every day.

Who cares about party affiliation anymore?  If you do, you're a fool.  That's political crap that we invented to confuse and mislead each other.  What actually matters are things like happiness, community, love, kinky bdsm sex with cumshots galore, sound money, personal freedom, science, equality, and so forth.  We're focussed on RIDICULOUS things, people, seriously.  Think about what you put your mental energy into.  Fighting about stupid "parties" is madness, much like Sparta!  Don't do it.  Think about what is real.  Realize you are connected to the planet you're standing on right now.  That is what matters, not the stupid political/economic GAME that we invented.  It's done, fallling apart around us.  Pick up things that matter, improve relationships, get your shit together.  And of course, buy silver.  If you do nothing else, buy physical in-your-hand silver.

And, as an added bonus - we have an Attorney General who's not the least bit afraid to speak his mind!

OneMoreWaste -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 6:19:45 PM)

Back in October I said the Dow wouldn't stop falling 'til it hit 6000, and I still stand by my prediction. I'll state again that for decades on end, 5000 was the *ceiling*.

Anyone with any sense whatsoever knows that printing more dough and giving it to the same people that got us into this mess is noooooowt exactly a gold-star plan.

NormalOutside -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 6:47:02 PM)

I think ZERO is the bottom.  I don't know much about stocks, on purpose, but I know that 5000 or 6000 or 8000 aren't bottoms.  They're just sticking points on the way down.

MasterShake69 -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 7:13:24 PM)

if it were to hit zero....this country and the entire world would be a very very bad place to live.  we would begin a new dark ages.

NormalOutside -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 7:17:28 PM)

Why would we go into a new dark age if the stock market and financial system fell apart?  We survived for 2 million years before we invented it, I'm sure we can make do without.  Things will change, but change is exactly what people voted for.  They just thought "change" meant "we'll be rich soon".

Termyn8or -> RE: Dow ends at lowest close in more than 6 years (2/19/2009 7:18:38 PM)

There are three kinds of people who are causing the decline of our beloved DJIA.

Those who can't afford to invest.

Those who can't get the credit to invest.

Those who refuse to invest.

I am in the last category, I do not think it is a good time. I also dislike the whole idea in the first place, and I would not take a company private. However I think alot of people who would actually invest are adopting a wait and see attitude. I certainly would.

In an ideal world, I would agree with you. This, however, is the world that just went through one of the most asinine, destructive, evil political party rule in history. So... yeah, party affiliation matters.
