I remember when Aid's had no name and was considered nothing more than someone needing psychological help.  A garbage can dx.

Just like fibromyalgia and other odd illness's.  They say that fibro is not deadly... yeah... okay...  You may not die from fibromyalgia, but you can die from a secondary something just as in Aid's.  There used to be doctors that stated this... but they are quiet now.

kiyari -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/21/2009 1:17:45 PM)

"AIDS" is a particular pet-peeve of mine.

It is NOT a diagnosis. It equates to: Your Immune System is Seriously Dysfunctional.

Yanno, there is NO test which actually detects 'HIV'... you knew that, right?

Many other so-called diagnoses are the same.

Iatrogenic: something you caught while in hospital.

Irritable Bowel: we don't know what is bothering you, something gastro.

Bell's Palsy: umm, half of your face no longer has muscular control.

... and etcetera

Yeah, I had to go searching for a pain doc after I got a new PCP who figured I was beyond her area of expertise. First one I went to, I spent more time filling out forms (how will we get our money?) than in the exam room. Temp taken, BP, pulse, then left until quack came in. He percussed, palpated, did the "Waddell Signs" bullshit, only heard the word "back" when I talked about my pain, then gives a dx of  "Chronic Pain Syndrome" which is shorthand for "no idea why you're in pain; you're probably faking it to seek drugs" and gave an Rx of Biofeedback. Uh-huh. So I pay my deductible, go home, do some research on said therapy, find out it's considered experimental by BCBS, and mostly bullshit anyway, according to the Cochrane meta-analysis (Cochrane is just the greatest. They analyze all the studies for design and results using evidence-based criteria. You know, REAL Science and not testimonials and all that shit). Then I get a bill for another $100 bucks. The fucker had the nerve to bill me for 45 minutes. They stopped bugging me when I told them I'll go to the state board and report their fraud if they don't fuck right off.

Chronic Pain Syndrome, my ass.

Peace out.  P.S. TY, dreamerdreaming. Been a while.

"Cancer pain also may occur in different parts of the body. In one study, more than 80% of patients experienced two distinct pains, and more than 30% experienced three distinct pains. "
http://www.oncologychannel.com/pain/index.shtml
Well, fuck, I have that. At any given time, there are at least two parts of my body which have pain.
This is another artificial distinction, the notion that, because a person has cancer, his/her pain must be more severe than a non-cancerous pain patient. I say bullshit. There is no rational reason to believe so.

And there is absolutely no way that anyone can say that xyz's pain is worse than ZYX's because xyz has cancer. No way.

Pseudoscientific mysticism, that's all that is.

Termyn8or -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 9:58:26 AM)

Actually some forms of cancer are not painful at all until they get to the stage where "You gonna die", and I mean "Sign your will this week".

My buddy had a theory that cancer actually does not exist. That it is merely a word they use to describe a whole bunch of ailments that share certain commonalities. I find that difficult to argue against. It is an abnormality in the cells, which tend to grow, but the different types are so diverse that I wonder why they ever bothered to concoct the big C word. I mean a tumor in your big toe is somehow the same thing as luekemia ? That's like saying an abcessed tooth is the same thing as pneumonia. (sp, sp)

Cancer can spread, well so can a viral infection. The difference between cancer and another disease is not all that clear, even knowing the classical definitions. There are exceptions and so forth to the point that they might as well retire the word.

Anyway, pain is still a sign of something wrong. In cases of fibro and such, they seem to concentrate on the firing of neurons and all this crap, while they should be looking for the underlying cause. There is not something wrong with all these receptors, and if there is, why ? It could be as simple as something that happens to irritate one's body, it could be soap for Pete's sake !. They tend not to explore this, and that is one of my biggest problems with modern science. Granted (pun intended), researchers are paid to prove something are they not ?

Other than that, I need to mention the flipside. You may get pissed at a doctor for not just writing you up a bunch of scrips, but you can't really say that he is not trying to do a better  job, that he is trying to be more than just a pill pusher, to do more. Notwithstanding the fact that they are watched for certain prescribing patterns to see if they are just a drug mill. I mean they might actually be acting ethically, we can't say for sure without getting into their head.

And really, can anyone on meds for chronic pain say with absolute certainty that they are not addicted, and the withdrawal effects are exactly just that ? I mean can you really say for sure ?

T (who it seems has the ability to stir up a controversy in a roomful of one lol)

Lockit -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 10:20:55 AM)

With fibromyalgia and other chronic pain disorders the doctors will test for certain things and when they can't find anything that seems reasonable to them, they give up and treat you as if you are the problem, not them, not their lacks and not a real illness.  If there isn't a test to prove it... which there never will be unless they research more rather than quitting too soon, they feel it isn't real. (Just like in HIV and AID's)

I was on narcotic pain reliever's and moved and no longer had my pain medication.  I did not have any withdrawl whatsoever.  Only unending pain and a crankiness when the pain hit certain levels and not being able to do what I want and need to do in a day, tiredness becasue of the lack of sleep because of pain and a real attitude about the medical community that files me under neurotic narcotic seeker without doing their job.

I remember being called all these bad things and yes they did actually say it all and them saying we just don't know why you have these spots on your brain... could be age... everyone gets them... to we are pretty sure you have MS... but will have to wait and see.  Meanwhile... I get worse, they want to wait and see and it turned out to be a deadly disease they never heard of that was effected by their prognosis rather than continuing to seek a diagnosis.

Until they stop blaming their lacks by claimging we are liars, cheat's, addict's and neurotic... we will suffer.

SavageFaerie -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 5:13:44 PM)

The key is does medication give you quality of life.

For chronic pain sufferers and the stigma of pain killers doctors have forgotten that.

The key question should be are you addicted to pain killers or dependant on the for that quality of life.

Big mega huge difference.

Camille I just posted in your thread in length.

Its just very sad for those with Chronic pain or disorders which are associated with the fad of prescription drug use.

I just want to have a bit of quality of life, not a list of drugs to snark down three times a day

lovingpet -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 6:05:18 PM)

I just went through a spell of indescribable pain over the latter half of last week.  I am working on going there again, I think and will have to do SOMETHING to cut it off at the pass if possible.  Darn it, I have plans this weekend!  Anyway.... I would just LOVE for narcotics and muscle relaxers to actually, I don't know, work!  I am beginning to actually consider some rather extreme measures to get some real relief.  Keep tryin me docs!

Here is what happened.  I was in tears just laying on the bed sobbing.  My dear husband attempted to massage the places that hurt only to have me screaming at even his slightest touch.  We decided I was going to have to be doped up to get any sleep whatsoever.  Two tramadol and a skelaxin later (low level narcotic and an intense muscle relaxer).  I was unconscious alright... sort of.  For all appearances I was fast asleep.  I just appeared to have the twitches a bit.  I stayed the entire night in a malaise of pain, spasms, and horrible nausea.  I felt better.... kinda.  I wasn't resting though.  Not at all.  I get up to go to church (gast, I go to church yeah yeah I know).  It took me over two hours just to dress and put my hair in a mangled ponytail.  My husband all but carried me down the stairs to the car and I dosed again on my way with the same regimen (it's pretty well all I have).  I was in cold sweats and dizzy all through church along with all the symptoms from the night before except my eyes were open.  I sat and watched my family eat dinner in one of my favorite restaurants, but couldn't muster the energy, coordinate the movements, or handle the shattering pain to even sip a drink.  So next verse same as the first for Sunday night.  It finally broke up a little on Monday.  Yesterday was semi okay except I had a lot of sleep to catch up on.  Today it is all coming back HARD.

Point of the matter is, I have the so called miracle pills and they yeild me not a darn thing once I hit a certain level.  There is no preventing that level from being attained either.  Lord knows I have tried and tried.  Now what?  My husband was ready to cart me off to the ER.  Why bother?  So they can give me the same crap through an IV?  So they can dismiss me or incorrectly treat me and make matters worse?  Not to mention I don't think I could have gone through the sheer agony of being in a moving vehicle that sick.

Come on docs!  How about an answer?  How about something that at least helps in the meantime?  Okay, so this rant is wasted breath.  Maybe I'm just not breathing right!

ShaharThorne -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 6:43:00 PM)

No one in particular to reply to, just adding my .02.

I have to deal with the fibro from day to day, as well as the bipolar, ADD, OCD, and PTSD.  I do take it one step at a time.

Right now, I just want someone to get a tennis ball and roll it between my shoulder blades, its so tight right there!

After this latest bipolar hospitalization, the pdoc thinks that the DX of fibro is still too damned new!  When was the last time he actually did a CEU about pain management?!?!?!  Fibro used to be called fibroitis and that term was used before the 1900s.  When I get depressed really bad, I have more pain.  Now I have to find a regular doctor in order to get some kind of pain management and one thing I have a phobia about is drug addiction.  I am a sober alcoholic (3+ years now) and I was addicted to opiates when I was in my late teens due to a sports accident.

Secondly...I am highly intellgent.  I educated myself about my disorders and find ways to live with them.  What I cannot stand are doctors who think just because they had some 'higher purpose' to help poeple does not allow them to talk down to their patients.  I had an A+ in medical terminology for goodness sakes, as part of my former nursing training.  I don't need baby talk done to me.  I can handle the truth.

Back to bitching about our backs again...the hot tub is looking good this evening....LOL!

camille65 -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 7:13:04 PM)

Patients with fibromyalgia treated with a synthetic form of marijuana, nabilone, showed significant reductions in pain and anxiety in a first-of-its-kind study, published in The Journal of Pain.

lovingpet -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/25/2009 7:25:56 PM)

I was aware of this study.  There are also very well done studies showing that natural marijuana is even more effective than the synthetic counterparts.  Unfortunately, most of us can't get our hands on either.

You're wrong (as I understand it). The difference is that cancer isn't solely any specific bacteria or viruses, it's the mutation of natural cells. This mutation CAN be caused by any of many reasons, including bacteria or viruses.

You ARE right in that cancer is an umbrella diagnosis, used to describe an illness characterized by the mutation of otherwise healthy cells (such as Leukemia). It's a *type* of illness (in the same way that saying that you have a nasty stomach virus is a *type* of illness), not necessarily any specific one.

I am sorry you had that.
I am not a dr, but I did sleep at a holiday in express last night so, here we go,
you need to back off the pills. the pills give you a temp fix, your body will see the pain killers and says I dont need to make as much endorphines (Sp) , so the pills dont work as well, you have to take more pills to get the same effect, then you chase your tail and WHALA your addicted.
find what works for you . its not the same for every one, I blew out l4-5 l5 s1.
and had surgery, anyway long story 2 things work for me.
lifting light weights doing squats with a damn near empty bar, hash oil in bees wax rubbed on my back  and a heating pad.
Good luck.

I do that for myself using a tennis ball between my back and a wall. It helps a lot. I also do that for my feet (but not against a wall hehe), pressing it to the floor doing a sort of self massage. Mmmm. Nicest part is that I don't have to tip the masseuse!

I have heard that if you go to bed bath and beyond they supposedly carry it. I get mine from a local source that sells to the marajuana clubs here locally.

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: Chronic Pain, or fuck the Doctors (2/26/2009 9:02:36 AM)

I think it unconscionable that you have not found a doctor capable of effectively dealing with your pain while also treating the underlying problem.
There are pain medications to take care of this, and there is no reason you couldn't find a competent group with doctors who respect/listen to you, rather than treat you like an addict.    M
