Greedy, step away from the linux! It's ok, you still have time to come back to the light ... er, dark grey of mac or .. or ... something.

Just don't let this happen to you!!!

(Disclaimer: I loves me some linux, but NOT on the desktop)

Alright, for a bit of serious advice ... I really truly suggest not going with Ubuntu. Well scratch that, go ahead and get Ubuntu if it'll work on the little system. Just never ever let it update. Ubuntu has a history of occasionally not working after updates for some people. In ways that lead to the computer not working in some big important way. Looking at that faq page it looks like you'd need to get firefox to do anything with flash on web sites. Assuming you can even do that much. It's already sounding like a kettle of fish I wouldn't want to touch.

Much as I don't care for the windows approach, for a laptop it's still a better choice if you're not a linux geek. Seriously, find out if you can toss windows on that little thing. If not, get your money back and get one that does have windows. It's worth more in the long run. And this is from a geek who's run various flavors of linux on a desktop system, including ubuntu well over a year. Save yourself the headache Monkey.

If the FAQ at http://www.littlelinuxlaptop.com/faq.htm is to be believed, the only way superuser privileges can be invoked is by installing a hack... not something that I'd suggest a linux newbie should do.

I'm guessing this device has a singular purpose which is to give a newbie or non-techie a way to do some basic computing functions without having the need to worry about updates, viruses, etc. I'm thinking the manufacturer believes that the lifespan of this device is similar to that of a cell phone; when it no longer does the things the user needs it will be discarded for a device with more features.

My advice would be to download the tarball or .tgz version when in doubt because every package manager can handle a tarball.

It depends on which distro supplied your Linux, as some distros use one of a few standards or derivatives for their software packages - RedHat (.rpm), Debian (.deb) or Slackware (.tgz).

I disagree that Ubuntu is the easiest, especially as it has issues with multimedia files such as mp3's and some applications won't be able to run files such as mp3's under an Ubuntu system. There are other Linux distros which are just as simple to use and just as effective. I run PCLinuxOS which is a stable system and a RedHat derivative, and would recommend any RedHat or Debian derivative as they are so easy to install and use. Just like Windows XP they have a 'root' or superuser mode which is useful if you have any problems or need to download or install any packages.

Knowing what the derivative of your particular Linux distro is is essential information when it comes to downloading any packages or software from the Internet. Some distros have their own software package management systems, Gentoo has the complicated (for me) Portage system, Ubuntu has at least two, but most others use either RedHat, Debian or Slackware.

This is essential because you're downloading a software package from what is known as a repository, or an FTP site on the Internet - also known as a 'mirror' - and it can happen that the software package you are downloading is broken or corrupt. It's advisable to get the checksum or md5 file and use it to check that what you're downloading has the same checksum - a long line of letters and numbers.

I run PCLinuxOS which has a good package manager which can handle not only RedHat but also Debian and Slackware packages.

Others I would recommend are Knoppix, Fedora, Mandriva and Vector Linux. Knoppix runs from a CD and cannot be installed (as far as I'm aware) but there are a few Knoppix derivatives which are stable and easy to use, and like Mandriva, PCLinuxOS and Vector, they will install over your present system leaving your 'home' folder intact.

Oh this is cheery. From the FAQ:
quote:

1. Can you install Windows based programmes like Internet Explorer, Winamp, Firefox, Office on this laptop?
No. This laptop Operating System cannot handle these files. For software that will run on your laptop please visit the software section of this site.

2. Does the Bon Echo browser recognize and play Adobe Flash (.swf) files?
No. The browser does not support adobe flash files, since there is no Flash player available for this specific browser (yet).

3. Do Firefox Add-ons work on this browser?
No. The browser does not support these add-ons.

4. Can you install MSN / AIM / any kind of instant messaging software on the little linux laptop?
No. This laptop Operating System cannot handle these files. But it comes with Xchat pre-installed, a Pidgin based Instant Messaging program that supports a lot of Instant Messagers such as AIM, MSN, ICQ, Google Talks, etc. So no need to install another Instant Messenger

5. Can you install Office or Word, Excel, Outlook, etc on the little linux laptop?
No. This laptop Operating System cannot handle these install files. But the little linux laptop comes with comparable software pre-installed so you can read and write Word and Excel files, send E-mail via the pre-installed E-mail software and read PDF's and e-Books with pre-installed software.

6. Can you install other Operating Systems on the laptop, like Windows CE, XP, Vista, Mac OS X or Linux based OSes?
No. This laptop's Operating System is embedded and cannot be changed for now. Lunix hackers have been experimenting a lot with the little linux laptop and some of them have managed to get other Operating Systems on it, but they worked far from well. Until a reliable, bootable OS comes to surface, we'll just have to do it with this.

So no flash, no browser that supports flash, no IM client dujour, no root access, likely no compilers, and no other operating system. This means that the bulk of useful suggestions for linux systems in general won't work for you Monkey. Send the dang thing back and find something with a useable OS on it, y'know, where you can install what you want instead of what it thinks you need. Wyld and I saw a half dozen of these things last weekend in the under $300 range.

Ooh, special Bonus Rant! The Bon Echo browser that is on this thing is Alphaware! To quote the top part of the home page:
quote:

Bon Echo Alpha 1 is a developer preview release of our next generation Firefox browser and it is being made available for testing purposes only. Bon Echo Alpha 1 is intended for web application developers and our testing community.

Normally I would agree with returning the laptop,
But..... I have a feeling GT has this laptop for a reason.....

If she has to learn Linux, might as well start with what she has
and explore

Granted, this is easier said than done....
and there are easier ways to learn Linux than with a slimmed down version that doesn't even allow full access

I second Ashers suggestion. Go for Ubuntu. Easy to learn and use, and very friendly and helpful communities on the net.

The problem with Greedy's notebook is that it is using an embedded linux and cannot be easily replaced. Her little book doesn't even grant superuser privileges which makes even the more routine linux maintenance tasks near impossible.

Uuuups! Did not see that.

I am an absolute computer cretin. However I did not encounter any problem yet with Ubuntu that was serious in any way. I run it on a D600 laptop, btw.
From were I stand, I can recommend it without a doubt.
