has anyone else on here received a message saying that you have won a HUGE amount of money on a type of lotto and asking for your personal details including phone number to be e-mailed back to them.  of course i dont believe this and havent done so but just wondering what the point is to this scam?

littleone35 -> RE: what are they on about? (2/20/2009 9:06:59 AM)

I have not recieved any on CM but i have recieved one in my e mail.  Said i won the UK lotterly since i live in the USA and never entered the UK lotto have no idea how i could have won it.  I would not worry about it it is all a scam.

thanks xx
just so everyone knows i did mean it was actually posted to me here on CM by another CM user, not to my e-mail address

Then make sure you report that user.

I've had them in my email inbox before.  I imagine its just a way of collecting email addresses for future scamming (although I appreciate that they already had the mail address to scam in the first place).  Or perhaps if you respond then they target you with more specific stuff.  Anyway, you can usually recognise its a scam by looking at the contact details which might not be as formal as you'd expect or there will be typos in the message.

The point is that you have won $500,000, which they will be glad to send you, but first you have to front them 10% for the withholding taxes, bank transfer fees, customs procedures, legal documents etc.  Once they have your money for the fees, you will not hear from them again.

However if you are interested, I will be willing to handle the arrangements for only 5%.  [:)]

PT Barnum said, "There is a fool born every minute"--as long as people keep trying hopelessly to get rich quick, these scams will exist.

Wondering??? Is this your first month exposed to the internet or what?

Ridiculous scam.  As Howard Stern's father said, "I told you not to be stupid, you moron."

What the others said, AND, they take as much personal identification from you as they can so they can steal your identity and wreak more havoc.

Are there actually people that fall for this?

I would hope on CM they don't simply because the idea of being contacted for winning the lottery via a kinky hook-up site is so ridiculous.

But in real life? Yup.

We had this issue with my grandfather--he got a letter in the mail saying he'd won the Mexican lottery (nevermind the fact he'd never entered or even been to Mexico), all he had to do was front them some money ahead of time. After that, my Grandma moved a lot of their savings to an account in her name only. He was in his late 80's at the time, so that might have had something to do with it.

If people didn't fall for it, I'd imagine it wouldn't be such a popular scam.

i hope no one falls for this and gives out personal info.  the cm user is faithcolins001.  if you read her profile it just says 'OK YOU HAVE WON'

YourhandMyAss -> RE: what are they on about? (2/20/2009 3:59:51 PM)

I got to the point that said that I had won a lottery I never entered, and was chosen by random email addresses on the Net, and quit reading.  Lotteries are funded by the ticket fees.

domiguy -> RE: what are they on about? (2/22/2009 4:07:57 PM)

Hahahahaha!  One of you passed up the opportunity of a lifetime....I responded and was immediately rewarded!

I'm Fucking Rich!!!!  WoooooooHoooooo!  (Domiguy pulls out two six shooters and dances around shooting them up in the air like the guy who struck gold and announces it to everyone upon entering the saloon.)

I'm Rich, dagnabbit!  You dumb fucks.  He who hesitates is lost.  Always leap before you look.....and most importantly...

Say after me, “It's no better to be safe than sorry.”
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two.

A-ha - Take on me.
