I wish someone would do away with World of fucking Warcraft

What do you have against World of Warcraft?

...it's the Sims of the modern age. Which is to say that it is to good gaming what Days Of Our Lives is to No Country For Old Men.

If you don't like the game, then don't play it. But to ask everyone else to stop playing because you don't enjoy it? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I have to question the rights of free speach to children.  Somehow I feel as a parent that I should have some control over what my child hears and sees. What if a video game had two people fucking in it.  I dont want my seven year old or my sixteen year old being able to walk up to a counter and purchase it.

...surely the point of most effective guidance in such a situation is, at home, when the um's are actually playing it.
Take a game like the original Deus Ex. As FC pointed out, the extra dimension video games  bring to the media censorship debate is interactivity. Now, DX was designed in such a way that is possible to finish the game and kill no game characters at all (well, bar one, but even the game designers see that as a flaw).....why not guide an um to play the game in that way?
Games gives us choices. As a parent why not use that characteristic to help them make good choices as opposed to bad ones. Means you have to take an interest in what they're playing but whats wrong with that?

Luckily you have that control over what your child hears and sees
it just requires some work on your part.
if you dont want your kid to eat pie do you tell VIllage inn that they shouldnt sell pie to kids?
no, you tell the kid that he doesnt get pie

really same issue here
The problem arises when parents buy M rated games for their kid, see kid playing the game, and decide then that he/she shouldnt have it
then, instead of doing some research next time, they blame the company that made the game

Adult content is everywhere. It is your duty as a parent to act as a filter between the world and your child, not the government's

ETA: as far as a game with two people fucking in it, there are quite a few.
Why is sex worse than violence? Would you rather your kid grow up to fuck a lot or kill people?

....oh play it all you like. i wouldn't try to stop you, just as i wouldn't stop someone watching Days Of Our Lives. However i do retain the right to point out there is much better fare available.

Then you jumped into it, which to me implied you agreed with that. Sorry if I missunderstood you.

...yup, WOW is facebook with better avatars. Heh, it has its place. However, when we're discussing pure video gaming, i can think of many other games with better design paradigms.
Have to be honest, while i played Guild Wars for a bit, i've mostly ignored MMORPG's. i prefer my FPS style games. i get my social side of gaming from clan organisation.....lol

FPS games make me motion sick
I like mmos because I love raiding, something about playing with 9-24 other people to acheive a goal just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

...as i'm sure you're aware not all FPS's are single player. Try the controlled anxiety of Zombie Panic for that groupagainsttheodds feeling. Or a group assault on a Strogg held factory in Quake Wars.
Perhaps the biggest criticism of games like WOW is that, because of their popularity, they can blind other people to the wide range of possibilities out there.

oh Im aware
and there is little as fun as some Co-op crackdown with a friend
the great thing about Playstation Home and Xbox live is that almost any game can be a blast of multi-player fun

I used to spend hours at an 24 hour cyber cafe' where several of the regulars would spend days and nights playing Ever-Crack.

....those MMORPG's do take a lot of commitment. Which is another difference between them and, say, Counterstrike.

Oh yeah, the shoot 'em up gamers would be in there for hours too.  It was a fun place to socialize and do homework.  We had a big crash out couch for the times you would be too tired to stumble home.
