ORIGINAL: Gwynssoftandshy Just out of curiosity, what is the nature of the deity in whom you believe (if you believe in one or a group)? i ask because i have a very hard time believing in an omniscient, omnipotent, and benevolent deity. i have trouble believing in an entity of that sort that bestows free-will upon it's people too. This question has always been a problem for me, probably due to some roughness in my own background. i personally believe in a goddess who is more volatile, less forgiving, and most definitely not always right, even though she is watchful and can be very caring of her followers. Beyond this, i think that the path we follow is fated, even when the method by which we follow that path isn't. Just as a point of information, i have no problem with atheists either, although that choice also doesn't work for me. You are welcome to respond why you don't believe in a deity if you feel you would like to share. i don't know how to do the whole poll thing so it'll have to be regular written answers if you choose to participate. Sorry. Of gods and goddesses, god, the god , the one and only true god, I believe they are aspects of ourselves, or at least in some cases our higher selves, what we can be if we concentrated on being the best we can be to ourselves, others and our enviroment. Of the myriad pagan gods and goddesses, they all have attributes, what they represent, often it is they are known for the external, not the internal, the self, as if it is the deity is apart from us, something to be reverred, worshipped, something we ourselves cannot be because we believe we do not posess god like qualities, something I feel is wrong.. My understanding in the god, goddess thing, is that they represent all of us, all of our male and female qualities, we all have them, so the better of the deities we should aspire too, because they represent us. Now, a god only as one polarity, that of male, I cannot accept as masculine, is not the balance of nature, it takes both male and female to balance. Maybe, could be why mono polarity belief wanes, cutting out the representation of one gender alienates, the feeling may be, if a something does not represent a gender, why believe in it. Now, I roughly follow a goddess, purely because of in a time of extreme distress, she made herself known to me. Now her attributes as far as humankind has made us aware direct thought to the darker sides of our nature, the hidden, the private. My understanding of the attributes is that we have to be true to ourselves to become something better, perhaps our best. I am working on that. But as I believe in and roughly follow a specific goddess, I am of the understanding that this deity is not the complete picture, but part of as it applies to myself. therefore I am free to wander through belief systems that interest me in search of my truth, as it is I believe the universal truth as it applies to all, is scattered amongst the beliefs and it is for us to find and take that truth as a means to understanding ourselves.
