Here it is. It appears this will be the test case regarding personal privacy. Expect this to heard at the Supreme Court within five years. Of course the litigation has at its point the indefensible child porn industry, but the blade gets wider very quickly. Successful, it has far reaching consequences. It may be required that each and every picture posted be accompanied by a certification of the age of the person. It may result in any site considered "adult" to certify the age of it's users. The most obvious, and I'm guessing the reaction we'll see first, is that "adult" sites will just disappear.

You know, on some thread recently there was a reference to the 1969 NYC "gay riots" in reaction to the June 27th closing of the Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. 1969 was the year of Woodstock. It was a time for civil disobedience against prevailing injustice whether it was for sexual orientation or skin color. The Stonewall Inn was the flash-point. It was successful in starting the "Gay Rights" movement. The reason it was successful was because until that day in June, gays were an easy target. It was thought that they were a VERY tiny minority. It was only until the community got "mad as hell" and shouted that they "refused to take it anymore!"; that their real numbers became known and the "movement" was started.

I wonder, if everyone who had a "dirty" movie tucked in their underwear drawer, everyone who uses clothesline and clothespins for reasons other than hanging clothes, everyone who kept and uses that "gag gift" spanking paddle or furry handcuffs they received at their bachelor or bachelorette party; decided to get "mad as hell" how many our numbers would be? The problem is we just don't refuse to take it anymore.

Suggestions?

Feds after Google data
By Howard Mintz-Mercury News

The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a federal judge to order Google to turn over a broad range of material from its closely guarded databases.
The move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child protection law struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to minors. The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches.

``This is exactly the kind of case that privacy advocates have long feared,'' said Ray Everett-Church, a South Bay privacy consultant. ``The idea that these massive databases are being thrown open to anyone with a court document is the worst-case scenario. If they lose this fight, consumers will think twice about letting Google deep into their lives.''
Everett-Church, who has consulted with Internet companies facing subpoenas, said Google could argue that releasing the information causes undue harm to its users' privacy.
``The government can't even claim that it's for national security,'' Everett-Church said. ``They're just using it to get the search engines to do their research for them in a way that compromises the civil liberties of other people.

our endangered values: america's moral crisis by jimmy carter. a great read no matter how you feel about religion. you'll find out just when the southern baptist's changed their ways and how america has shifted so far to the right, and stepped on so many amendments that it's scary to most thinking people.

fundamentalism isn't just for other countries anymore.

carter summarizes the fundamentalism seen here with 3 words, "rigidity, domination, and exclusion." it's not the kind of domination most would or do care for.

A good read indeed. Ironically in that book he speaks in favor of the war against pornography though.

i must have missed that part, as i read how he considered different lifestyle choices as not something for government to be mucking into. instead, he rebukes the fundamentalist religions and government for most of what they have done. he also said that rather than have government rule on what is constitutional about same-sex marriages, have them define and protect equal rights for all citizens, including those of "civil unions."

now as to the subpoenas from today, this is just another part of that act that nobody seems to have read. this just keeps getting deeper and deeper and the rights keep getting, as i've said once, "tossed out with the bath water."

the next president will have a very hard time trying to dig out of this quagmire and still survive.

we have "killed women, killed children, without remourse," as was just said of bin laden on larry king live by senator evan bayh. we've just done it in the name of someone other than allah. may god/muhammed/buddha/goddess or god whomever save our wretched souls.

Everyone needs to take a look and understand the problems that may appear on your doorstep. Take a look athttp://www.wndu.com/news/012006/news_47388.php

Then make sure you dont fall prey as well. Yes it was child porn but what is next a young girl on a site like this and is really 16 and not 18 and you have uploaded a photo. Also Michigan has now paseed and used twice in my area a new law against torture. Seems our privacy is going south fast be careful

Page 10.
Second paragraph

"It is encouraging that a number of Americans overwhelmingly agree on several important questions: ................(the last item of that sentence) a desire for federal obscenity laws against hard-core pornography to be enforced"

That being said, it was a very good read and I probably would not have caught that part if I did not produce BDSM videos myself. The book gives a lot of insight on the fundamentalist right and I would reccomend it to anyone. Also a short read only 200 pages or so.

thank you for pointing this out; i do feel you should quote the whole thing, however, so it may be seen in context (as really it should be seen the in context of the whole book). i also agree it's an extremely good read, and i've recommended it to a lot of people.

the quote: "it is encouraging that a number of americans overwhelmingly agree on several important quesitons: the value of religion in individual lives, the power of personal initiative to realize human potential, the need to protect the environment even if that is costly, doubt about the integrity of big business, and a desire for federal obscenity laws against hard-core pornography to be enforced vigorously."

that is the only sentence in the whole book which even mentions that enforcement; obviously he thinks we've far more serious issues to deal with, which he goes into as the book continues. his take on fundamentalism and civil rights are dead on, and he knows of what he speaks.

it's nice to see that someone is out there reading and keeping up with the outrageous rights being ceded daily.

as to google, i never really liked it, but lately became lazy as it's the default for some many things (like safari on a mac). i'm going back to dogpile and hotbot and waving hello to big brother.

Many - most - of the alternative search engines are powered by the big three. And Google is the only one that is resisting.

Deleteing cookies every day may be a good idea. Maybe it won't do much but won't cost anything to try.

Thanks Mercnbeth for publishing this article about Google's activism. It is important. ELECTRONIC FREEDOM FOUNDATION is an organization of lawyers, activists, and some of the brightest IT minds in the country. They are freedom fighters in the digital age and champion these kinds of battles in the court room. They have more wins than losses and are a good bet if you are looking for a place to send some spare bucks.

I am impressed that google held out and did not bow down to the feds. Some of the best minds in the country are behind Google. They understand the importance of resistance. I am not surprised the MSN, Yahoo, and AOL bowed.

We, The People are the Dominants.
The government & politicians are the submissives.
It's time they remembered that fact.

Visit my site to learn how I am fighting city hall in Indianapolis and to learn more about the EFF.

Miss Ann
