Ut ohhh!....it seems some sort of "sensor glitch" has resulted in the arctic ice pack size being "underestimated" by about 500,000 sq/km...about the size of kalifornia, as the good Governor would pronouce his State name. I guess that's good news for the polar bears so I'm cancelling my $10 donation to the WWF and sending $1.00 each to the top ten management people at Bank of America who are now under an Obama salary cap, an announcement that was good for some press.

We should also try to reach Pelosi and tell her to take her time coming home to "save the planet"..like maybe 20 years!

Cory, you seem to have overlooked the following sentence from your link:

"We stress, however, that this error in no way changes the scientific conclusions about the long-term decline of Arctic sea ice, which is based on the the consistent, quality-controlled data archive discussed above."

*snort*

You mean that they are saying that their facts were in error, but they stand by their conclusion?

Firm

nods to Greedy Top for the "snort" idea.

I think they were saying that there are some problems with the most recent data, but that there's enough historical data to buttress long-term conclusions.

Eta:

Went back and took another look at the link. The sensor drift error began in early January. That still leaves plenty of data from before then for drawing conclusions about long-term trends in Arctic ice.

Well they can't admit they were wrong. Then no one would pay them and they would have to find new jobs.

Freezing.  Warming.  Doesn't matter.  Change is bad.  Read the memo.

Uh huh.... I saw that...but figured...hey, I would say the same thing if the government was paying my salary.  Should I not cancel my check to the World Wildlife Federation?[:)]

Gosh..the only problem I have with that is that 30 years ago the scientific community was saying that we were going into an ice age.  Now over the past 10 years the scientific community was saying that we were causing "global warming"...but than after a couple of "disappointements" with respect to dozens of horrendous class 5 hurricans NOT happening after Katrina...and some pretty cold winters...the "buzz" is now about "Climate Change"....just keep that grant money rolling in guys and they will change the bumper sticker to suit the enviornment, I guess.
I'm just a guy running a small business and have no idea about what has changed life on this planet over billions of years...but my guess is that the earth itself has something to say about our future.  We are all floating on a mass of molten rock, iron, and whatever..even "diamonds" too... Sometimes that stuff decides to go up, up and out in a big volcanic eruption. Gotta think that might have more to do with the elimination of a species than my spray can, some gas coming out of my car...or my breathing out of CO2!  Heck...weren't all the continenents one big mass of whatever...and than they separated and formed Ireland and the rest of the world.
Who caused that...give me his name! I'm gonna press charges.. (Looks up and says, "Just kidding Lord")

A sensor failed in January. How is this of any importance to anyone except the poor schmuck who has to go out and put out a new one?

Well it should be of some importance to the schmucks at Daily Kos who quoted  the reportedly  shrinking ice pack in the arctic on those faulty NSIDC reports from sensor failure".

...but I doubt they give a damn about truth!

So notify the author and see what response he makes. Your OP and thread title are intentional misrepresentations and unluckily for you people read links and check facts.

It's a matter of where ya think the truth is and where there is misrepresentation...with Al Gore,
who is leading the fight to waste tens of billions of dollars we don't have to "save the planet"...gimme a break... or l'il old harmless me...just chatting on CM and thinking that more than an ice age..or a heat age....the E.L.E. I'm worried about is real personal...mine, thanks to where we are headed with this "save the planet" bullshit.

Lucylastic -> RE: Can someone send Al Gore an IM...The artic ice pack has been "underestimated" (2/23/2009 5:41:59 PM)

OMG Another damn consipracy by the polar bears, the cantankerous bastarcds musta screwed the sensor to favour their numbers, *look we are stranded and dying, help usssssssssss*
You gotta stop reading blogs I have read daily Kos four times in ten years , and that was for comedy value and Im as liberal animal and treelover as uneducated liberal there is. You really have to stop thinking that we are alll morons, it really doesnt further any of your rantings.
Its gotton to the point where I check random stupidity for some political  threads, and so far I havent been disapointed.

I don't even know what that link said....it was a bunch of jargon....I'm not even sure what this link suggests.

Are you suggesting that the polar / arctic ice caps aren't shrinking?

Is that honestly what you're suggesting?

Sorry...I clearly missed something here.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: Can someone send Al Gore an IM...The artic ice pack has been "underestimated" (2/23/2009 7:34:47 PM)

My God....I just read all the imprudent....impudent....posts that followed the OP....you can't possibly be of the opinion that (regardless of Gore and others) you / we have no impact?

Who cares?

Why do you care who?  Or why?

You so blatantly discard polar bears solely because they have a newspaper imprint?  Because they make news.

There isn't an intelligent person alive that isn't aware that the Earth waxes and wanes.  This is either a wax or a wane.....and we may have caused it...or not.

So what?

And maybe it's all good.  Maybe it's part of the process.

I find it hard to believe that, because we now have the incredible ability to affect it...for good or otherwise...that we can't affect it for good.

(My preference is for good).
