Aneirin -> Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 5:21:52 PM)

It would seem near everyone I speak to who are ex smokers, will admit to still having the occasional craving for tobacco products many years later, in some cases twenty years later, who of the ex smokers here would agree with that, would they agree that despite their smoking days are gone, they still feel the occaional craving ?

Could it be that tobacco products are so addictive, that once their presence has been noted in the brain, they will always be missed when the user quits their use ?

I have quit since Jan 5th...Cold turkey.  Gained a few pounds.  Have had several recurring smoking dreams.  In my dream I am driving and I open up the glove box only to discover a full pack of smokes that are slightly opened.  I'm sure if one was looking at me at that moment I would have the biggst fucking shit eating grin on my face...From the outside, one could only imagine that I might be dreaming about having Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears starring together in the same snuff film.

I loved smoking.  It made me cool.

PanthersMom -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 5:33:22 PM)

i quit cold turkey almost 18 yrs ago.  every once in awhile i'll have a fleeting craving, but the very scent of smoke turns my stomach and irritates my lungs.  cub comes home from the car club smelling like smoke sometimes because so many of the ppl there do smoke  and it's disgusting.

I'm a current smoker, and I'm planning on quitting soon.  Our federal government in it's infinite wisdom passed a 62 cent per pack increase in the tobacco tax, and my own Democrat controlled state government passed a 51 cent per pack increase that goes into effect March 1st.  It's just going to be too expensive for me to continue to smoke.  I love how politicians get away with increasing taxes on one segment of the population just because smoking is now taboo.  Let's not forget, that a large portion of smokers are in the lower income bracket.  So they're you have it....Democrat's compassion for the working man.

They are around 8 bucks a pack in Chicago.  Saving the dough is great.  Still miss those fuckers.  It took over a month to stop coughing up brown shit.

they are bad news.  Blame it on who ever you like.  Let's face it. You quit and you might just hang around a bit longer.  You will be miserable but you might grow old.

MidMichCowboy -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 5:48:54 PM)

I quit a little over 6 years ago. I quit cold turkey, no gum, pills, or patches. No urge to smoke, in fact, I find it distastefull.

One must be in command of themselves, before assuming command of others.

A twue Dom.....Is the type of addict that continually joneses for smokes but has the strength to stay away.

Anyone can quit an activity they find distasteful.  I will give up eating scat!

GimpinDenial -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 5:56:12 PM)

Like all addictions

You will always have the craving after you have stopped

Whether it's illicit drugs
Alcohol
Cigarettes
Caffeine
or even Pain

if you were addicted before, you will always crave it......that which you were addicted to.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:00:31 PM)

Lot's of things are bad news, Domi.  I'm pissed off at my state government for their reasoning behind the new tax.  We don't have a trauma network in this state.  Our governor decided a tobacco tax would be the best way to fund that.  Here's what pisses me off, a large portion of people going into trauma centers in our state are the result of drunk driving.  Do we tax booze, do we increase the fines for drunk driving?  Nope, we decide to tax smokers.  Another large segment of people needing treatment in trauma centers are morons riding motorcyles without helmets.  But we still don't require helmets for riders in this state.  Anytime the issue is brought up, the morons ride their bikes around the capital building to show solidarity.  We also don't have a primary seatbelt law in this state; meaning cops can't pull someone over for not wearing a seatbelt, it's a secondary offense.  But do we pass a seatbelt law to decrease the number of people needing treatment in trauma centers?  Hell no, we tax smokers.  We tax them, and say part of it is to discourage smoking.  Of course that's ridiculous.  If everyone quits, they won't have a revenue source.  It's just sticking it to the little guy.

A plastic straw cut into a cigarette length that you can hold and inhale air through is way less costly.

GreedyTop -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:35:58 PM)

I've tried all the traditional means to quit.  They dont work for me. I need Chantix or Welbutrin.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:47:53 PM)

I've tryed chewing, dipping, cigar smoking, the gum, the patch, and even my grandmother's remedy of chewing cloves upon the urge to smoke (smoke a cigarette after chewing cloves for the nastiest taste you've ever experienced.)  None of them worked for me.  I enjoy smoking, I really do.  I know it's bad for me, and I know others find it disgusting.  But it's my life, not your's.  I shouldn't be taxed disproportionately from the rest of the population.  I don't want to hear the arguments about absorption of medical costs, when we have to absorb the medical costs of drunks, pill poppers, bulimics, fat people, motorcycle riders, etc, etc.

memaid -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:48:23 PM)

Welbutren gave me the hives, chantix gave me a terrible headache, nothing else worked for me. except... "the easy way to stop smoking" by Allen Car" a very annoying book but it works

SmokingGoddess -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:52:35 PM)

A cheat I use is an E-cigarette. I use the kind with nicotine but it also comes with non-nicotine cartridges.
This is the one I use:
http://www.crown7.com/hydro-electric-cigarette.shtml

That site has wonderful products but horrible customer service... I still think it was worth ordering with them.

TreasureKY -> RE: Ex-smokers ? (2/22/2009 6:54:20 PM)

Hmmm... I don't mean this to sound like a commercial, but NJoy isn't a means to quit.  It's a nicotine replacement system.  You still get to enjoy nicotine and the sensation and taste (mostly) of smoking, but all the really bad stuff from smoking isn't there.  No tar, no carcinogens, no smoke to pollute your lungs or stink up your hair, clothes and house.  Nothing burning, so no ashtrays or ashes, no cigarette burns on your couch or clothes, no second-hand smoke.  If you replace cigarettes entirely with NJoy... eventually no more smoker's cough and no more getting winded climbing stairs.  Plus, it's not really smoking so it's technically legal to "smoke" in restaurants and on airplanes.

Of course, you'll still be addicted to nicotine.  Question is, is nicotine addiction any worse than caffeine addiction?

I quit over 6 years ago and I still miss them occassionally.

Yes, I quit with a straw. It was cheap. Inhaled air.

No, the NJoy electronic cigarette, I mean.

I have a pretty good idea how the straw thingy works.  [:D]
