I Have been looking around for a harness and I just wondering if anybody could give me a little advice as what to look for and what it should look like?
Also I have really only seen leather harnesses in porn I still am confused on whats a top's harness and what a bottom's harness is? so if anybody could help me clear this up in anyway that would be great too.

A harness with a function, be it to connect to a parachute, pull a cart, hold a saddle, restrain, or fasten someone to an ejection seat, will vary in looks to fit the purpose of the design. For instance, a pony play harness would probably have thicker and wider belt straps in front and on the shoulders to distribute the load of a saddle or cart. Harnesses that are designed to restrain will probably have many more pieces to it to hold limbs in various positions, and might even lock. Googling bondage toy stores would probably give you a good view on what's out there (porn isn't the best for seeing variety or what's good IMO). As for the difference between top and bottom, aside from the fact that I don't see many subs binding or making their owners pull carts, I don't know of any.

Then again I'm fairly new to all of this myself :p

Hook up with a rope lover, they will make a rope harness for you to suit their needs [:D].  As far as a "top's harness", you won't catch me wearing one!  So, can't help ya there.

You can find all sorts of harnesses on Extreme Restraints, Stockroom.com , or Leather,etc.  Those sites are, at the very least, a good reference.
 
Whenever someone says 'harness' to me, an image of the typical anal plug harness pops into my head. There are also suspension harnesses, bondage harnesses and bondage belts.
 
I've never worn a harness myself as I favor corsets and dresses. Maybe some Doms will chime in with their favorites for scene wear.

I spend a good bit of time hanging around with gay leather men and I've never seen any distinction between harnesses. The main thing, I think, is the bottom only wears a body harness if the Top wants him to. So, find one you like and go with it. Just don't wear it over a t-shirt.

Its very seldom you would see a top wearing a harness and if you did he would probably spend the night being mistaken as a bottom. Saying that I do have a harness that fits round the top of my legs and interlinks to the subs neck collar... its called a honey trap.

Think about comfort and function. Make sure all the buckles are in the right places. I have had strap-on harnesses made by amateurs that are just about impossible to wear. Its worth paying a bit more for something that has had time and research put into it.
