Good afternoon all!

As some of you may have noticed, I have been doing some heavy duty car (station wagon) shopping research.

First was the '09' Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI (diesel).  Although technically a viable contender with a selling point of high MPG, I am moving away from it because of a reputation for electrical/electronics problems and very high cost of parts

The next two contenders in my search are the 2009 Toyota Venza (V6 FWD) and the '09 Subaru Outback (2.5i auto).

Does anyone out there own either one of theses vehicles?  Have you had any problems?  Are they reasonable to insure?  Are you happy with your choice?

Both (but Toyota in particular) have a solid reputation for reliability, which is my primary requirement in any vehicle.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

You can`t go wrong with Toyota.

1st,Subies are not heavy duty.A bit stronger than regular cars, but they`re cars.

Toyota has the crossover thing down pretty good and b/c they sell trucks, they have the technology that makes their heavier duty vehicles better,IMO.

A few of there SUVs are their pick-up, with a stationwagon body on it.

Can`t beat that.

Actually, I should clarify that my research has been of the heavy duty variety...and not really looking at heavy duty cars...

Jeep.

I`ve had 7.

I starting with 3 Willys Overlands,two Wagoners and a pick-up.

Their new ones are expensive but worth it,IMO.

A HD pick-up(w/ 4WD) w/ an extended cab works excellent. My favorite is Chevy Silverado.Could put my gf,two dogs and all our stuff in there for trips. It could pull anything in tow. That was a 1500 class.

I have a 2500 HD now w/ a regular cab and miss the extra room. But it`s a tank that`ll haul really heavy loads. The extended cab type seats 6 adults. The "crew cab" style is ginormous.

1.  Yes, skip the Jetta Wagon.  Volkswagens are just not holding up.  Mine was one of the worst cars I have owned.

I recently bought a tiny hatchback and was stuck between the Honda Fit and the Scion xD - and Edmonds.com helped a lot.

When you see old whipped-to-shit cars in documentaries about Africa, it's often a Toyota.  They keep them running.  That say a lot.  But then again, go to Alaska - what you see is Subarus.  They are both cars with an excellent reputation.  For me it would come down to price, mpg and styling.  I doubt either car is likely to be a bad choice.

Yeah...I looked at one briefly.  I wasn't too interested in a SUV though.  I don't really need the off road capability or the (reportedly) higher insurance.

I'm voting for the Toyota :)

My curiousity: Are both the Venza and the Outback AWDs? Is there some discussion of MPG when a vehicle is AWD? Is there any  comparison worth noting when one is AWD and one is not?

The Subarus only come in a all-wheel drive, and one of their major selling points.  The Venza is available as a all wheel drive, but I think I will opt for the front wheel drive.  The EPA estimates are about 1 mpg less with the AWD v 2WD with either engine.

In the VW's defense, I own an '01 Passat 4motion wagon. Yes the cost of parts are high but it rarely needs any.  Spark plugs have needed changing once in its life.

It has only now, developed an electrical glitch. That's after 8 years and 120,000 miles.

We've had two Subaru Foresters and have been extremely happy with them.  No "warning, may tip over in slight breeze" since it has a boxer engine and the center of gravity is lower with the opposed cylinders.

All wheel drive....Mrs. C says she can hear  the car "thinking" when she's driving in the rain.

We never would have considered Subaru, but now we probably won't consider anything else!  We are sold on quality of Subaru.  If we ever decide to get a sedan, it will be a Legacy or such.

You can even get a "turbocharged Forester" if you want to freak out your neighborhood car jocks ;)

Subaru has high marks: http://www.subaru.com/research-and-reviews/awards-accolades.html

I looked at a Suburu prior to getting the Passat. What decided me against them was the lack of leg room in the rear. Fine if you don't have a family, but for those who do it is tough to put a couple of tall teens in there and take a three hour drive. Has this been addressed in the newer ones?
