Evility -> Lock Bumping - Bump Keys (2/26/2009 4:40:29 PM)

Someone sent me this link today:

If someone wants to get into my home badly enough they are going to find a way in but this is a real eye opener. I'm amazed that I never heard about this before today.

A professional thief can find their way in the majority of the time.  Lock and alarms can slow them down a bit but unless you staff the place with 24 hour body guards and attack dogs not much else seems to deter them.

I say this after having a previous apartment that had the lock damaged or the place entered when vacant on several occasions.  The deadbolt was damaged too.  In this case there was reason to believe it might have been an inside job from someone who worked in the complex at the time or had been a previous employee.

Of course I filed the reports and had the locks changed numerous times but the items stolen were never recovered.  [>:]

Security as we know it of any kind, is just a method to slow down a criminal, so as to make them think what they desire, is it worth their risk. Time is the factor that governs those with criminal intent, an easy job, the majority of actions are those that can be performed in the smallest amount of time. Slow down the time that a criminal has to do their deed, and there it is unlikely except for the most daring to continue.

Nothing is undoable, nothing is inpenetrable, the factor is time, all the time in the world and there less chance of discovery, much can be done. Slow down the time, make a person work for their pay, the more chance they may be discovered, a chance that bores deep into their minds.

The locks on my house are there to protect the burglars from my dogs.

Large dogs are a great deterant because they make noise and the intruder is afraid of being bitten.  Motion detector lights are also a good idea.

Ditto, my pitbull and doberman do not take lightly to intruders and the Owner is armed...

A theif I used to know years ago described such things in quite the dry manner when he said that locks were for honest people.

It has been around for a long time.   I played with it probably 3-4 years ago and it is, well, scary and "hmmmm...very interesting."   After a few minutes of practice, it takes only a couple moments to open most locks, given the right bump keys.

Here is another video in the same venue:  Opening Masterlock combos:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbVZER_WhPc

Locks only keep honest people honest.

Cars locks can be bypassed. Even "one way" screws can be unscrewed.

Now, looking down the barrel of a shotgun and facing two growling dogs....THAT's deterrent!
