Rule -> computer screen question (2/26/2009 6:58:33 PM)

I have Windows XP. In my configuration thing my screen safety is set at 105 minutes. My problem is that after about watching an episode for about twenty minutes my screen goes black and I have to touch a (cursor) key to get it going again.

What do I have got to change to watch an episode or movie without those interrruptions?

In Settings

In Display

Under Screensaver  you should have a Monitor with a Button that says POWER

in Power

Change wher it says to Shut off Monitor to NEVER or to the Max that it allows, Also make sure your Screensaver is set to a an acceptable time line.

Hope that helps

Rule, go to your Start menu, to Control Panel, and select Display.

Click on the Screen Saver tab.  Where it says, "Wait: ___ minutes," click in the blank and type in how many minutes before screen saver comes on and takes your picture down.

If that doesn't do it, go back to that same box, and adjust your Power settings.

Actually you can turn all that crap off. First of all CRT monitors are dirt cheap these days, so burn it. The power consumption is not great. I've had the same monitor for a long time and it's not burned, it's a piece of junk with disabled power feature and resync blanking, but it's a 17" flat Trinitron and there is no burn. It runs all night and only gets turned off when I go to work. You would think my icons would be burnt into it so bad that you would see them with it turned off, but it never happened.

If you have an LCD monitor a screen saver means nothing. Anything that leaves the back panel light running is absolutely useless, plus they simply don't burn. A plasma monitor will burn, but not really worse than a CRT and like I said they are not as prone to it as people generally believe.

In general, there are a few setting you have to find, but once done, I found that it is all BS, just bells and whistles.

Now when viewing the PC on my 36" projection TV, when not in use I do turn that off because of the high output tubes. They will burn.

In any case my screen saver as well as power management works manually, via a power button. So far so good.

Actually to expound on that, I set EVERYTHING I can find in settings to never. Never do anything automatically. Again, so far so good.

The only reason to have screen savers and the like is if you have phone over internet or something which requires the PC to run unattended for long periods of time. Or if it is part of a server network, things like that. It is totally useless for the average person.
