Status: offline 		If you've been in or are currently in college, what was/is your major? What made you choose it? What did you like and dislike about it? Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch? What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?

If you're an Archaeology or English major, I especially hope to hear details from you. I thought I was sure about majoring in Archaeology, but now I'm not so sure... I think I may want to do English instead.

   Nursing
What made you choose it?
    Working in a burn ward made a profound impact on me, and I've been wanting to get back into it ever since.
What did you like and dislike about it?
    How fucking hard it is to be one of the 20 out of 300 that makes it into the program.
Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch?
    I was undecided for a bit, but was at a major university that wasn't right for me. Way too many people.
 What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?
   Getting a job in my field, then going back to school to get the next nursing degree, until I am a nurse practitioner. Eventually, the goal is to be 'top' nurse in a major burn facility... one can only hope. ;)

Status: offline 		Archaeology is good from what I've seen it involves moving dirt around with a toothbrush and annoying the project manager of a construction project.

Status: offline 		I started in Mathematics and Computer Science without really thinking about what I wanted to do.

Switched to Film and English Literature and left because I wanted to explore other things outside academia.

Went back for Literary Studies and Semiotics which is where I should have stayed, but ended up working in software development.

I am currently in college. My major is psychology.

What made you choose it?

Working with the abused and mentally ill has made me want to be a therpist.

What did you like and dislike about it?

It is a lot of work, and is no where near an exact science. However I love the fact that I will be helping people.

Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch?

Nope. I am Quite happy.

What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?

I am going all the way to a Ph.d. So I have a long long ways to go. I hope to get a position in the mental health field that will help me later on... and that will get my feet wet. It will be years and years before I am done with school.

My major was nursing.  I chose it when I was still in the military, because I saw an overall dedication (meaning, more people in the profession who were competent as opposed to slackers) in the field, and the numerous directions you could go with it. 

What I disliked were some instructors who blatantly disliked men in the field, and that in two different colleges, not once was there a male who was on faculty or a clinical instructor.  However in fairness, I have no clue if any every applied either.

What I did like was that compared to the other courses that weren't nursing specific, it wasn't long before the yahoos were weeded out or quit or failed.  I think nursing majors who actually made it to graduation can take pride in knowing that more than likely, they were one of only 30-50 percent who made it all the way through, and know that we earned a quality degree.  For instance, I had a friend who went to Penn State, who  never took a test that wasn't multiple choice in his major.

I work as a staff RN at the same place I was working as a nursing assistant. I do want to go on and get a Masters degree, but have been hesitant because I'm not really sure I want to move up into the management and administrative side of things, but I probably will start next year anyhow.  I'll focus on education, and I love to teach, and hoping that I can at least be a part time faculty member teaching some of the classes, or get a nurse educator job where I work.  The current one should be retiring in a few years.

Analytical Chemistry

What made you choose it?
I'm good with numbers, mathematics, equations, and problem solving.

What did you like and dislike about it?
It gets a little mundane sometimes

Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch?
I started out as a human bio major and then switched to chemistry.

What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?
I'm teaching at a private college and working for a pharmaceutical company. I'm actually going back to school to get a Ph.D. in toxicology.

As Lynn said, it is VERY hard to get into a nursing program.  When I first started 40 out of 200 applicants made it in.  Being accepted is an honor and privilege.

No, though on a few occasions early in my training I wondered what the hell I managed to get myself into.

What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?

I've spent a fair amount of time in the SICU this semester and discovered that I really enjoy it, so I'm hoping to get an internship at the hospital where I'm currently training or possibly the IMCU.  My third choice is either the Telemetry or Med-Surg units.

If you're an Archaeology or English major, I especially hope to hear details from you. I thought I was sure about majoring in Archaeology, but now I'm not so sure... I think I may want to do English instead.

Status: offline 		Funny coincidence. I'm a double major in English and Anthropology (my school separates the Archeology and Anthropology departments, but there is some overlap in required courses) in my third year now.

I started as a Psych major with the intention of picking up the Anthro major once I took a course and knew if I liked it. I still like psych, but it's more of a hobby now. I realized I didn't want to do research at all and I would probably make a piss poor therapist in the long run.

I should have been an English major all along. I'm a bibliophile.

I'm graduating next year and I'm hoping to do Teach for America for a year before applying to grad school (where I'm hoping to find a home somewhere I can combine my majors).

Over this summer and through to next year I'm pursuing an independent research project on Slam Poetry as a hybrid genre combining literature and performance. That way I get to do the literary analysis I love, along with the ethnographic research (looking at Slam as an oral tradition).

I realize what nerd I sound like. End diatribe.

P.S. It looks like our interests overlap quite a bit, so feel free to shoot me a line on the other side if you ever want to talk about any of it.

Thank you very much, servantheart :) I sure hope I make the right choice! I'm going to sleep on it until the end of term. Ultimately the choice is up to me, but it's helpful to hear how others went about choosing their majors too. Thank you to everybody else too for your responses!

I've gone four times, each time with a different major.
 
First trip was right out of highschool - Vocal Music Performance major with an education minor.  My goal was to teach music in public school, preferably at the junior high or high school level. I suffered burnout from taking to many courses per semester, and dropped out just prior to actually finishing my degree.
Second trip was a few years later, as a single parent - Psychology major with Sociology minor.  I figured Psych would pay better/have more opportunity to actually become employed than Music.
Third trip was after a summer semester break when I didn't take classes, followed by a change in schools from the nearby community college to the nearby major university and a change in major from Psychology to Aviation - I got seriously addicted to flight by the ex I lived with at the time, and had aspirations of becoming a professional pilot.  (Aspirations which Life put to rest, considering my severely handicapped spawn was still quite young at that point.)
Fourth trip was recent - within the last 2 years, and about to be picked back up again now that life is begining to finally cut me some slack as far as consistant babysitters for dad - finishing the work on the psych degree (just cause I'd like to finish the 2 classes I lack to walk across the stage with it) and working on a business management & website design/management duel major.  I'm back at the community college for this one, and taking about half the courses as Online rather than actually in the classroom, since they're specifically dealing with HTML, JAVA, etc that all require being on the computer anyway. It's not so much a major as courses I think will help with my business - if I were going to actually declare a new major (they still have me listed as a psych major) it would be Art, and I'd start taking some of the art courses that I'm interested in.  I'll probably take them anyway, just not declare a major. 
 
If things go the way I'm hoping they do, I'll actually walk across the stage in about another year and a half with 4 degrees in hand - Music, Psychology, Aviation, and Website Design.

I was a pseudo dumb ass, instead of changing majors i just kept adding them on. I was on the 9 year plan and I finally graduated with Majors: Religious Studies and Women's Studies with Minors: Political Science and Native American Studies ( and honestly they were talking about making NA studies a major also at the time*cries*).

What made you choose it? I originally chose Religious studies because I needed educated ammunition to throw back at people who were bastardizing a really awesome book. Then I got into the history and the geek in me feel in love with the history of Christianity. It also became a gateway for other religions outside of the Abrahamic religions. As far as Women's studies I wanted to be a midwife and wanted to start with studying the culture (and religion) of women.

What did you like and dislike about it? The paper writing. I had a weird hodge podge of having to write papers of 400 words to 15 pages...

Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch? No switching, just stock piling.

What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation? I am now doing absolutely nothing with my degrees and I'm thinking of going back to school for languages to be an interpreter.


I think that if you are having doubts about your degree and your thinking about switching, talk to an advisor and also have a chat with the department head (or a prof). I don't see anything wrong with even taking one or two classes. Never finish a degree that you are no longer passionate about just to get it done. I think that is more waste of money then switching a time or two.

Chemical Engineering

What made you choose it?
I always had an interest in Chemistry, it seemed like a challenging field with a strong employment potential

What did you like and dislike about it?
I took Honors Organic Chemistry, we had a class of 30 versus the usual 400 in the regular class.  It was a totally fun class with a professor who looked exactly like Orville Reddenbacker (sorry for spelling). 

Did you ever switch majors, or are you planning to switch?
I went one year as undecided before I chose Chem E.

What did you end up doing after graduation/what are you planning on doing after graduation?
I worked in retail when the oil companies tanked during the original gas crisis, finally ending up in aerospace, into my third decade there.  I suppose that means I like it OK.

Status: offline 		i started out on a music scholarship in voice, (i was a kick ass soprano back in the day), switched to art, then english.  then i met who i thought was the man of my dreams, had 2 gorgeous kids and haven't made much of a dent in my schooling since. 

i loved all of them and would love to have a degree in each of them.  i've thought of going back and focusing on just one but i haven't quite decided yet what i want to be when i grow up.
