The last of the National Guard troops are being pulled out of New Orleans as a cost savings measure to the State of Louisiana. But the citiziens there do not feel there is a large enough police force to protect their lives and property. Residents long distrustful of the city's police force are worried they will have to fend for themselves. "I don't know if crime will go up after these guys leave. FR I haven't been to New Orleans since 1997. It was a shithole then, and I suspect it's even worse now. I never understood the love some folks have for that city. If you want to see a real Mardi Gras celebration, don't go to New Orleans. You go to the little towns west of the city. It's cheaper, less crowded, a lot more fun, and the food is 20 times better. I don't blame the residents for doubting the police force's ability to control crime. When I graduated college, the NOPD had a booth set up at the job fair. They were begging people to join; only problem is they pay less than most police departments in this region of the country, and those cities don't have out of control crime.

I was there a couple of weeks before Katrina and found it great. Bourbon Street was a blast and even after midnight I felt safe.

That number dropped to 179 in 2008. Nevertheless, "crime continues to be this community's No. 1 concern. Even with the lower numbers it is still unacceptably high," said Rafael Goyeneche, executive director of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. Before the hurricane, the police force had more than 1,600 officers. But its ranks were reduced after the storm by more than 30 percent because of desertions, dismissals, retirements and suicides. (New Orleans has only about 70 percent of its pre-Katrina population of 455,000.)

I would rather they stayed and kept order in the areas where the police do not patrol but Louisiana is in a budget shortfall too.
