Actually Owner, Rush Limbaugh did openly defend Bill Maher's comments after 9/11.  So did G Gordon Liddy.  A lot of conservatives did.  I don't even remember what Phil Donahue did.  I thought he was cancelled because no one watched his show.

Sorry, we do not need to lighten up about this matter, but then again you live in  Ontario, Canada, so I understand your RESPONCE.

Perhaps being Canadian makes me blind to racist cartoons eh?

I wondered about that comment myself. I guess it's bad to imply that a bunch of politicians write like monkeys but it's just fine to imply anyone from Ontario Canada is incapable of an intelligent response. But I am sure she felt superior when she put him down, so yea, it's all good.

DomKen -> RE: Open Letter to the New York Post (3/2/2009 6:49:52 AM)

Actually having someone from another culture say they didn't get a racist meaning from a cartoon that comes very close to a common racist meme in this culture is of limited value because it is from outside the culture and therefore outside the framework where the cartoon was produced and interpreted as racist.

heh heh... Canada as a culture foreign to the USA... heh heh, yeah sure. Those people in Toronto just don't get what's going on in NYC! Thank God they have no racial minorities up there. Just pure French Canadian stock, you betcha!

When you say something really stupid, put an emote in there so we know that you know it, eh? Don't type like O59! ;-)

Thanks for the smile,

MH

Go to Toronto and ask what the connotation of the cartoon of watermelons growing on the White House lawn is. They may be our neighbors but some of our culktural stuff they don't know much if anything about

That's what amuses me about these posts. Don't like getting caught out? Just ignore it, change the subject, do something, anything, but admit that it's your sorry ass out there wavin in the wind. No, just leave it out there like it's supposed to be there, and we should appreciate more inanity.

People... political cartoonists are there for the true believers. They grossly lampoon for the impact of the message, not the accuracy. All political cartoonists do this. The ones you like. The ones you don't like! You cannot have a double standard on what caricature images are acceptable and unacceptable, just because one set appeals to your sensibilities, and one set doesn't.

That said, PETA and the SPCA should be angry about the dead monkey cartoon. Why aren't they? Because that would dilute the greater liberal message.

Insisting something is something it is not does not make it what you see it to be. Perceptions, even heartfelt perceptions, can be wrong. Being offended, vociferous, and even Legion in number, does not make this a racist cartoon.

Yeah, I know... the dead chimp represents President Obama, just because a cultural angst requires it to be so. The intent of the cartoon (that I got, inspite of expecting a racist message) is irrelevant.

This is true, but that is not how it came across to me. I guess it's true that different comments or comics will come across differently to different people.

Actually I understand the connotation perfectly well and expect that the majority of Canadians would as well, we have black stereotypes up here (though they are more Jamacan related) as well.
