Orrrr, you have really bad acid reflux.

cjan -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 11:49:29 AM)

Simple, really...anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.

From my experience with life, I need to jump in here and say I totally agree with northern Gents assessment right on page one of this thread. The content eat. The ill content brew not beer, but ideas.

Well, the French taste for big ideas isn't as appealing as it may seem at first light.

There was a recent survey conducted among schoolchildren in France and England.

All of the children (aged 10 to 12) were asked: "What is great about your country?"......

French replies ranged from: "France is beautiful"....."France is a free and democratic country"...

English replies ranged from: "Well, we have running water"....."The weather is quite nice; it's not too cold and it's not too hot"......

English replies were typically pragmatic.....no big dreams of abstract notions.....

French childrens' replies were regurgitated bollocks....I mean, how can a 10 year old possibly know whether or not France is 'free and democratic'?.....what does it say about a country that wants to brainwash its children into thinking that it's some wonderland?

In relation to food, the English are typically pragmatic about it as the English schoolchildren were when answering a question relating to their 'great' nation, so it could never be an art form here and is pretty much a necessity in order to pursue what to us are more worthwhile pursuits. Obesity is nothing new among the English. John Bull is the forerunner and English equivalent of Uncle Sam - created around 1730 - John Bull was a portly man who ate and drank too much...he was seen as a typical Englishman.

I abhor abstract notions !

Although, regurgitating bollocks seems quite concrete...perhaps that is why the French are more svelte than the Brits.

First beer I had in England was a John Bull Bitters on tap. Quite good.

I think Americans feel entitled to abundance and more is mo better.

Well, yeah.........I was imagining having an evening with KittinSol the other day.......everything was grand....great conversation, plenty to laugh about, but something must have got lost in translation somewhere because when I offered to cook for her, she thought she'd be sitting down to tapas or something or other and an expensive wine....whereas I served up pie and mash to be washed down with a pint of ale....my imaginary evening pretty much turned sour from there as she ambled out of the door while shrugging her shoulders and muttering something about merde.....

cjan -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:02:47 PM)

Damn ! I had a similar day dream, except in mine, I served her bollocks and she gobbled them down, then said, in a Cockney accent, "please, sir, may I have more? ".

I guess that's my Yankee optimism. No wonder y'all blew the Empire !

ienigma777 -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:05:32 PM)

Eating to excess...American foods are filled with chemical additives, estrogens, hormones; Mother Jones reported some years back where ranchers were recycling the cattle's feed mixed with their shit. A movie a few years back, Fast Food Nation; addressed this issue.

Excesses...have any of you looked at the Arabs, and Dubai (spelling?).....

Dip them in garlic sauce and she'll be sucking on your scrotum for the best part of a week....

That's where we fall down, forever trying to charm the French ladies with our pie and mash......we need to learn some lessons from the Yanks and get straight to the point.....

Vendaval -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:15:04 PM)

Northern Gent and cjan,

You two could set up a stage act with this routine and go on the road.  [:D]

Is KittinSol invited? I'm not dipping my knackers in garlic sauce...even for her....

Vendaval -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:23:54 PM)

You need to ask the lady herself.

cjan -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:27:35 PM)

Lushy, bollocks are tender and force feeding, while it has it's charm, has it's drawbacks as well. I think NG has the right idea. Dipping them in garlic butter before serving is brilliant ! Hell, snails and all kinds of otherwise unpalatable critters are simply a delivery device for garlic butter to the French and other gastronomes.

You purists might want to order the sauce on the side, of course.

Vendaval -> RE: Why do Americans need such excess? (3/2/2009 3:28:45 PM)

And apply the sauce with a pastry brush just for tickles and giggles.

No chance.....I'm an English gentleman...."would you be kind enough to wear these knee pads, tilt your head slightly and open your mouth to a radius wide enough to accept a gift, before I carry you to the floor and gently place you onto your knees.........if it's not too much trouble....thanking you, kindly...."
