Barter is alive and doing well here in the mountains, familys often trade one service for another.. WE have excellent credit and several credit cards but rarely use them,my motto is if you can't pay cash then wait till you can afford the item...I use the one card entirely for my online poker and the other is for a  time when you may be on the road or some thing and not have enought cash on you for the problem on hand...bounty

I have a few friends that I'll loan anything I have that they may need. Because I know that they always pay me back or return the item when they say they will, in as good, if not better, shape than when they got it.

But anyone else? Nope, I'm with you, LaT. I'm sick of the excuses, the whining and never getting a thing back or even an acknowledgment about it. [>:]

These days with the state the economy is in as well as the number of lay offs, Credit Card companies are cutting credit to the bone. You can have a perfect credit score, have always paid your bills on time, and be secure in your position and if your mortgage is with a bank that is having serious trouble, your house is in an area that has a high foreclosure rate or there has been a high layoff rate in your area, you can find your credit suddenly lessened. Getting new unsecured credit with less than stellar credit can be difficult. If Capitol One turned you down, you are not likely to get one that is not secured by money in advance. They are one of the easiest companies to qualify with.

So how do you build better credit? Rent an apartment and make your payments on time. Join a Book of the Month Club ( they do report), get a store card and charge SMALL amounts and pay them off in payments not a lump sum. Buy a car on a time payment, pay on a student loan ON time, or even a Hospital bill. But it is not going to be easy these days...I wish you luck.

The most important thing needed to do is clean up the past mess. You must be completely debt free. A good place to start is to google 'Dave Ramsey'...When the mess is cleaned up don't go back into debt. You don't spend $1.20 when you only have a dollar...

No. around here, If the other person in tending to live with you are  above 18 both adults have to fill out an application. It's against most apartment rules to have an undisclosed person living with you.  Apartments have rules about guests, and it's usualy like about 3 days and any more than that and the land lord consideres them living with you and they have to be put on the lease, or leave.

I do not know how housing works.  Can you get a place without putting him on the application?  Can't he cohabitate in the apartment without having his credit checked?  Just asking because I'm really clueless about this stuff.

Boy is that the truth. When my Cocker Spaniel was alive he was the biggest money eater ever.  Nowdays, since we had to put him to sleep because he was dying, I don't spend money if it's not for groceries or bills or something small and cheap, like a magazien with recipes for people with diabetes. .

If he has bad credit, one of the worst things he could do is take on more credit with cards that probably got him into trouble in the first place. If he does get a card the interest rate will be close to 30 %. Why do you need more grief..In Wisconsin car insurance companies now base rates in your credit history. One more reason to cut up the plastic and get debt free..

Building a credit score (or repairing one) isn't as simple as having more credit cards, as others have said.  This link will give you some good advice and numbers/addresses for contacting the three credit bureaus...a start.
If you do choose to use cards to increase your score, be sure to read point #5 in the above link....something to remember when using a department store card.

One of the best piece of advice given here was by servantforuse... "You don't spend $1.20 when you only have a dollar..."
Pay your bills on time and live within your means.
Good luck.

He's never had a credit card in his life, that's not why his credit is poor. But it was a good assumption and probably likely in other cases.
