Hey, did you hear about the proctologist that did astrology on the side? His business card said, "Uranus is my business."
[sm=Groaner.gif]

Hilariously enough, Uranus is Aquarius' ruling planet. Who said Aquarians were a bunch of arseholes [:D] ?

OMG! ROTFLMAO! You are too good kittinSol!

Perhaps when I used the word, 'thoughts' I should have used 'intentions'. The double slit experiment is the first thing that comes to mind. The experimenter determines the outcome of the experiment. If one sets up the experiment to find a particle, then one sees a particle. If one sets up the experiment to find a wave, one finds a wave.

Feynman

There's at least one error in the above source.  It missates Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle...that is simply the fact that in the quantum realm, you can know a particle's velocity or it's position precisely, but not both at the same time.

When the author states that they "don't understand quantum theory" but then tries to talk about it, there are going to be problems.

Scientists speculate that there will be a polar shift in 2012, which, they say, will cause shifts in tides...world wide floods and mass devastation.

*sighs*  No, no, no.  Scientists (real scientists, not guys named Sir Moonbeam that rub crystals on people to cure cancer.) do not predict a polar shift in 2012, nor do they predict a polar shift at any specific date.  Pole shift hypothesis' are not even a widely accepted idea among scientists.  It's not know if it's ever occurred on any planet or ever will occur on any planet.  Now if you're thinking of a magnetic reversal, that's a completely different theory.  Still, it's not known to have ever actually occurred.  Even if it's possible, no one can pin down a specific date for it happening.

Seriously, where do y'all get this stuff from?

Louve00 -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/2/2009 6:56:47 PM)

I don't know about any scientists named Sir Moonbeam (maybe you could enlighten me though, slaveboyforyou [;)] .  One scientists, if he's on your list of credible scientists, is Einstein.  http://www.december212012.com/articles/Albert-Einstein/Polar-Shift-by-2012.htm .  A noteable historian, again, if you have him on your list of credible, is Charles Hapgood, who explains pole shifts. http://www.westerncritique.org/hapgood.htm .  There has already been proof the poles have shifted, and yes, magnetic reversal is behind the whole phenomenon.  As far as predicting when it will shift drastically...as for when the world ends, yes...that's always been the question.  I'm just saying, looking at the statistics.....its coming.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/2/2009 7:04:58 PM)

" Twenty years ago, said Linda Schele, a leading epigrapher at the University of Texas in Austin, the leading Maya scholars thought that the hieroglyphs would never be decoded because they were logograms, pictorial characters that stood for complete ideas or words. Without some key to deciphering those meanings, the ideas were forever locked in stone. Scholars also felt that most glyphs represented astronomical or calendar information.
Deciphering proceeded at a snail's pace, Dr. Schele said, with a few words decoded here and there through hunches and guesses.
But this began to change, Dr. Schele said, as two revolutionary ideas, put forth in the late 1950's, took hold among a new generation of Maya scholars that emerged in the early 1970's. One idea was that the hieroglyphics are a mixture of logograms that represent whole words, and of phonetic syllables that actually spell out words in a spoken language. The second idea was that the large monuments built by the Mayas contain stories about real people and events. They were historical tales waiting to be read."

Dr. Schele's book, which I cited earlier in this thread (for those who don't read whole threads and missed my post [8|] ) makes no mention of Human sacrifice, or at least it isn't named in the index.

Mayan cuisine is a favorite of mine.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/2/2009 7:14:46 PM)

The magnetic pole can shift over geologic time due to continental drift, but the axis of rotation does not change.

Evidently, the Earth's magnetic field has changed polarity about every 250,000 years for a very long time. [&:] http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/

I think, although I have not encountered any evidence to confirm my SWAG, that this current reversal may be a contributor to Global Climate Change.

Your link doesn't say Einstein theorized a pole shift in 2012.  Einstein never did make that statement.  The link also leaves out information about Hapgood's relationship with Einsten.  Einstein did not support the pole shift hypothesis.  Charles Hapgood wrote a book in the late 50's titled, Earth's Shifting Crust, which asserted that the Earth's entire crust sometimes shifted and it placed the poles at the equator.  Hapgood's theory was before Plate Tectonics had become widely accepted and later proven.  Einstein did not agree with Hapgood, he wrote the forward in his book.  It was simply a word of encouragement towards Hapgood.  Einstein simply found his idea interesting.  He also found UFO's interesting; that isn't proof that UFO's exist.

Hapgood's theory has been proven wrong by plate tectonics.  The world's crust is not one giant entity.  It's made up of plates that float on the Mantle.  It doesn't and can't shift suddenly to rearrange the poles.  Like I said, stop getting information from pro-doomsday prophesy/pseudoscientific websites.

Yes, Hapgood was a historian.  So what qualifies him to make assertions about geology?  Hapgood formed these theories while searching for Atlantis and the story behind it's destruction.  He was a bit of a crackpot.  Yes he was noted, but he wasn't widely followed.  As I said, all of his theories have been debunked.

Your westerncritique link is a pro-BNP (British National Party) website that makes light of Holocaust deniers.  It's basically filled with conspiracy theories.  The article is laughable.  Your assumption that Hapgood's theories involve magnetic pole shifts is absolutely wrong.  Hapgood believed in a complete shift of the Earth's crust.  It had nothing to do with magnetic pole reversal.  The entire Earth's crust can't shift to reverse the polls; that's proven.

There is NO proof that the poles have shifted either geologically or magnetically.  There are suspicions that it has occurred and can occur.

I've read every word of every research paper Enistein ever authored. Nothing on geophysics.
Hapgood seems to have been a loon who at one point was a history teacher.

So both those claims are bunk.

Ok, slaveboy, you're right, I'm wrong.  Not that your righteousness makes me believe what I do anymore stronger or lesser than I did before.  (Besides...you get kind of cute when you scold people) [sm=smile.gif]

TNstepsout -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/3/2009 5:34:35 AM)

Something else. I still think it's cool though. It's pretty amazing that all those cycles within cycles all line up on that one day and it only happens once every 26,000 years (roughly). Ancient people had a much greater sense of time and space connectedness.  They believed that these cycles influenced the earth, it's people and it's history.  Maybe they were right.

I'm not being self-righteous.  I'm a skeptic, and I'm a little contemptuous of folks that seem to rejoice in the thought of an apocalypse.  I never scold, I only try to steer people away from the Kool-Aid barrel.  Besides, the Universe is fascinating enough without hocus-pocus.

*oh BTW, I'm cute no matter what I'm doing.  [;)]

*grin*

I'll give you that, you are cute, no matter.  Still in all.  I may not want anyone stearing me from the Kool-Aid barrel.  I stated in the beginning (if I didn't, I should have) that I do not believe the world is ending in 2012, and I don't disbelieve it.  I just don't know.  If I were able to look that far into the future, hell...I'da picked the winning Lotto numbers by now.

I just have always been fascinated by the 'what-if's in the world.  Whether right or wrong...its like an amusement park for me, and even through it all, I do learn.  So its all good!  [:)]

Remember  Jan 1st of 2000?
People stockpiling food and water in their cellars?
This will be the same thing!
I watch a lot of those History Channel type programs too.
They use the word "could" a lot. Also, "might."
And they all seem to mention "Nostrodamas" a lot too.
Give me the lottery numbers and we'll talk.

I will start beliving in this stuff as soon as somebody gets that million dollars from James Randi.
