Needle play feels like a needle.  It can hurt a lot, or a little depending on what is being done.  Before doing needle play I would suggest you go to a seminar that teaches all the aspects of safety.  You do not do needle play with sewing needles and you need special anticeptics to cleanse the skin.

91% rubbing alcohol is usually good at helping to prevent infection if you use it on the skin before and after the piercing.

Are you planning on doing just temporary play piercings, or going the actual route of making them permanent?

You can google seminars in your area, usually the kink community has a bulletin board that will list what types of activities and classes that they offer.  You may also be able to meet someone at a munch or local gathering that would be willing to show you how to do it safely.

I would not recommend safety pins as they are not designed for that purpose.  Although, they would look cool pushed through the skin and clamped closed!  I would recommend getting your needles at a medical supply store, or buying some of the piercing needles that are used in the shops where they pierce professionally - those you can buy online.

And as for how much it hurts, well, depends on the gauge of the needle, where you are doing the piercing and how sensitive the person being punctured is.  It's all relative really.

Good luck, be safe!

I think the level of pain is likely an individual thing. As for techniques, I would suggest learning from someone who is reasonably well versed in needle play. I do highly recommend using sterilized needles though and not just *any* needle. You should be able to buy syringe needles (the ones I've seen most commonly used) at a medical supply store and these will be sterile and individually wrapped. They come in a variety of gauges with a smaller number equating to a larger gauge and a larger number equating to a smaller gauge. Sounds backwards, I know.

Also, 70% isopropanol is far more efficacious than the 91% suggested by Juliannadelion. It penetrates organisms far more effectively than an alcohol of higher concentration will. The goal here is to avoid introducing bacteria past the skin barrier and potentially creating an infection.

Needles, needles, needles, love, love, LOVE! Muahahaha

Okay, now that I've regained composure, can you tell I adore needleplay?

Pain is subjective to the amount of fatty under layer there is and whether the area has a profusion of nerve endings and of course, gauge of needle used. Take a breast, for example, the outer fatty part of the breast when pierced is unlikely to cause any kind of pain reaction, whereas if you insert them into the areolae or nipples b/c of the high profusion of nerve endings it's going to hurt like a bitch (unless you are used to it and the sensation of pain will be processed easily due to the endorphin rush you'll experience). Just b/c a needle is 3/4" in length or longer doesn't mean you should insert that entire length into a person, remember that depending on what area you are piercing there will be major nerves, ducts which could become infected and arteries/veins, learn anatomy to ensure you know where everything is located.

First Aid knowledge and experience, along with a good kit are your best friends.

Here are some tips for you:

If you want techniques, get thee off to a demo, there will be plenty available so check the local scene for events going on.

Always have a sharps container at hand, if you haven't a proper sharps container, an empty coke bottle will do.

Always ensure the person being pierced is clean, ie a shower before hand and prep the skin to be pierced with hibiscrub, antibacterial soap, or a weak solution of 6% hydrogen peroxide which is diluted with the same amount of water. I do this AND also use swabs I buy specifically to prep the area I'm using on. These can be purchased from the same vendor you buy the needles from. Always discard contaminated materials carefully in a biohazard bin and not just throw them in your usual bin.

Ensure area around you is CLEAR and you have a steady surface to put your equipment on, and that the area you are placing hte person to be pierced on is also CLEAN.

Have latex/exam gloves on, the kind without the power crap inside.

Ensure needles to be used come in their own individual sterile pack. Once you have removed the plastic cap protecting the needle ensure you do not attempt to replace it back onto the needle as this is how punctures to the fingers occur. If you do receive a puncture to the finger, do not then use the same needle on the 'victim', discard into the sharps bin immediately, along with the gloves you were wearing, once you have stopped your bleeding and cleaned it up, applying a plaster, you'll need a fresh pair of gloves.

The higher the gauge of the needle, the smaller the needle actually is, ie a 25 gauge needle is smaller than one which is 21g. They will come in various sizes and the colour of the hub is significant to their gauge, so orange will be 25g and usually the needle of choice for a beginner.
Select areas that have a nice fatty area of tissue underneath, breasts, stomach, tops/outer arms and thighs are ideal, so too are buttocks and the back but avoid the area around the spine as these are for very experienced people.

Decide beforehand exactly what it is you want to do with the needles, ie if you want to create a decorative pattern decide beforehand how you wish to do this.

I would like to write a lot more on this but haven't the time at present to do so, so feel free to write if you'd like further information.

*headdesk*

No, no they're not. They're typically nickel or chrome-plated steel, which can flake off into the piercing, they're dull (compared to a hypodermic needle), and they punch a hole rather than slicing, which means they're more likely to scar.

You can get "play piercing needles" on-line from any number of BDSM toy stores, or from painfulpleasures.com. Depending on what state you're in you may be able to get them at a pharmacy (you'll probably have to ask, as they'll be behind the counter), or at a farm store (Tractor Supply & Equipment has a nice variety).

if you do not use sterile needles, i suggest you do not do it. And no...safety pins are not sterile. You need to visit a medical supply store.

Unless they say sterilized, needles and pins are not sterile.  Medical companies have various ways to sterilize, but the only one you might have access to is an autoclave, which produces high heat and pressure with steam.  Otherwise, buy them prepackaged as they are fairly cheap.

Alcohol is barely OK as a skin prep, but a topical disinfectant like Betadine is the gold standard.  It can be sticky and the iodine discolors the skin until washed off, but it kills far more nasties than alcohol which is why it is used in most surgery suites.  Regardless, skin is never going to be sterile and if you put a needle into skin regardless of how well it has been cleaned, there is an infection risk.  All you can do is minimize the risk.

and think about cross contamination. Its all good and well if you have both been tested for such things as hep and HIV but if not you need to learn about protecting yourself and your partner from needle sticks and what to do if you get one.

You *really* need to go to a teaching demo/workshop.

Aside from the big things, like what to use, where to use it, etc you'll learn the *how* to use it, as in, what orientation for the needle, what to do when it goes wrong, things like that.  Nothing beats face to face learning, you may even find someone who will show you what to do with your sub/bottom.

As others have pointed out....NO, safety pins are NOT okay to use.  Some people use alcohol for disinfecting.  We use a special hospital grade skin antiseptic.  Most BDSM clubs will offer a class on needle play, although you'd have to wait for the class to be offered.  It is NOT an activity to learn online.  When you take a class you will learn what kind of  needles and disinfectants and how to use them properly.  If you need to find a group near you, follow the link in my signature to find your local scene.

I learned needle play techniques while on a vacation planned to coincide with a BDSM event.

Needle play is one of the few things that I felt I needed to see live and learn about in person.  You have gotten some really great advice, but you'll get even more and understand even better from a demo or workshop.

I was thinking that play piercing needles shaped like safety pins would be super hot especially in the nipples, but I googled it and came up with nothing. :(

I usually play with needles for the aesthetics, not to receive or give pain.  One thing that is fun...piercing someone, removing the needles, and then beating the area until the sites weep.

Another way to ensure pain and a nice red cell river, provided the recipient and the person doing it are in agreement to the inclusion of possible scarring, is to use the bevelled edge of the needle and scrape it against the flesh on exit.

Something else I also wanted to add to my previous post regarding accidental self injury is if a person pricks themselves once they have inserted the needle and are pushing it through the other side, do NOT pull it back out the same way. Clean yourself up firstly and once you are plastered and regloved (new gloves), use forcept to hold the sharp end of the needle still and snap off the plastic hub, then using the forceps pull the needle through and discard in the sharps bin.

I only use BD grade pre-sterilized play piercing needles. As for pain, it depends on the area/ your pain tolerance. Alcohol should be used to sterilize the area... I always use a warm sea salt mixture for afterwards

This sounds good in theory and its the way I was trained but have you ever actually tried this? The best thing, in my opinion, is to grab your coats and go straight to the accident and emergency department and let them deal with it. I always tell anyone before needle play begins that if we get a needlestick then we will be going to the hospital.

After looking at your profile, I have to tell you that you are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from those lovely folks at kinky medical.  They carry all kinds of supplies that you can order on line.  So, before you go putting crap like safety pins into yourself or someone else, consider getting something worthwhile.

Then, before you order anything, take the advice you got about checking into learning opportunities in your area, so you'll know what to do with the fun supplies you can get.

And then, in the time between now and when you can actually meet up with someone who knows how to use those lovely pointy things, cyber walk yourself to Amazon (there's a distribution center of that in your home state, too) and get yourself a book.  Personally, I'd recommend "Play Piercing" by Deborah Addington.  In it, you'll find a lot of answers to the basic questions that you're asking here.  Miss Morrigan did a great job with her answers to you, but there's only so much you can say on a message board.

Yes she did an awesome job, That post put a smile on my face that will last for quite a while.

Edited to add, I increased the font on your post in case the OP missed it. There are some really good ideas in there.

as my M'Lady LadyPact has said it is best to get the real stuff and find a demo to learn from. as far as the pain it is subjective to the recipient. i had a bit of a phobia on the needles from being a nurse, once i got past it it was wonderful, proper preparation is best use only sterile items for piercings as staph and other infections are easy to get and hard to get rid of. read up and find a mentor, get sterile supplies.
have fun
