LadySonelle -> The BD In BDSM Stands For Belly Dancong?! (1/21/2006 10:12:38 AM)

WOW! Im getting BACK into an old passion of Mine... Middle Eastern dance, Le Dans du Ventre or in the -popular parlance, Belly Dancing!

A slave innocently started it by sending Me a CD of Egyptian music! I used to dance, 30 years ago, and the rhythms have never left My feet! I found Myself doing the Tsifte Tele across the room and trying to remember the Camel Walk! Oh, My what fun!

Once My beloved First Servitor returns to health I shall ask her to make a costume for Me and I shall try to re-train Myself to dance! Somewhere in all My old photos I have a pic of Myself in My old black and silver outfit. I danced as Zainab Esme (the Beautiful Esme) Maybe I'll try to re-create that costume but for My now much larger body. For those who don't think large Women can dance, check out the group "Fat Chance Belly-Dance" from the Bay Area! Arabic men ADORE larger dancers!

Now... where in Heaven's name did I put My zils and dance sword?! All the veils are still in their box.

I have an idea for a dance routine where I dance with two whips and a slave tied to the side post of the stage! YIPPEEEE!

Wanna see My floor work?! SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Lady Sonelle
Zainab Esme!

I recently began learning middle eastern dance. How fun and sensual!!

I do suggest, if anyone does decide to learn, you go to a teacher and not take some class on dvd...the reason being, as in any dance, positioning is everything, and a teacher can teach you to 'feel' the correct positions...

have fun!!

hurray for you - raqs sharki is my release and exercise and pleasure all in one hobby. i love it and have been dancing and taking lessons off and on for over ten years. it's so much fun. i love making costumes, choreographing dances, listening to the music, i especially like sha'bi - ahh and is momhamoud el fouad not a hunk. i have a friend who holds a local belly dance showcase every sunday night and i even worked up the courage to perform there once or twice.

i too recommend that if you want to dance, find a good teacher, look online or check out what's happening in your local community. many areas have classes at local parks and rec or community college venues.

there are differnt styles of belly dance - it's not all one thing, check out a variety of dancers - many have great websites with video clips - and see what appeals to you. my favorite it the more classical egyptian styling - though i am still trying to master that darn walking 3/4 shimmy on the down.

i love, love, love middle eastern dance!

I am more in the Egyptian/Turkish mode (I like the lessened emphasis on floorwork in traditional Raqs Sharqi) but can work up a good shimmy in Greek tsifte-teli as well. I took lessons years ago, and will be seeking a good teacher now, again, rather than just plunging back in. I agree with the walking shimmy! My bete-noire has been the camel-walk... I really REALLY have to concentrate... and then the zil-work falls off! Also getting up and down from floor-work GRACEFULLY... so very hard to do! I always look like a cow coming out of a mud-pit! :D My teachers despaired of Me!

My very favourite is the belly roll and the veilwork! I love it so! I can balance a sword on my head, but haven't yet gotten good enough to bounce one up and down over My body.... that will come when I'm back in shape, I think.

Floor work is my nemisis - a damaged knee makes it almost imporssile to get up much less grancefully. i know what you mean about the zills and the walk - i can do a mean omi walk with zills and can camel very well, but camel walk with zills - well, let's just say that needs work. i am so fortunate in having had some WONDERFUL teachers and, in so cal, being able to attend great workshops. And of course, there is the shopping...

Belly dance is such a fun girl thing.

BD in BDSM stands for bodacious. (look at wikipedia)

Dancong is not affiliated with any of the other congs, Kong Haakon, Viet Cong or Congdoleeza Rice.............

And that's the way it is.

NO, I'm no longer in the bay Area. I learned to dance in Southern CA and gave it up when I gained weight... not realising just how dead SEXY large dancers are!!

Silly Me! Now I'm in Santa Fe and there is a dance studio near Me that teaches Middle Eastern (I think mostly Turkish, but I'll check) dance.

Ohhh, camel walk and zils! Not My best ability! OTOH, I *do* drum!! 9/8 rhythms, the famous "Woodchuck" one... "What?!" you cry... yes, go to the tsifteteli and chant. "HOW much wood could'a WOOD-chuckchuck if a WOOD chuckcould-chuck WOOD! (pause) HOW much... (lather rinse repeat). See? Now... I DARE you not to chant that the next time you hear the rhythm! Once at Moun of Tunis, a restaurant I went to frequently, I saw a dancer mouthing it! LOL!

I've had the great good fortume to see Fat Chance in action! Ohhh, what a treat! They danced at a birthday party of a Mistress friend of Mine in San Francisco! We were entranced!
I have a tape of them somewhere.

I need to save money! First for lessons, then for a girdle, then for a drum!

I too love belly dancing, but then I love most forms of dance. I recently retrieved my belly dancing costume to wear to a BDSM event and was flattered by the praise (I made it myself). I'm thinking now I'm over the DVT I should take up lessons again, but I'm also disappointed I've never danced for anyone but myself. Maybe one day.

LadyShoshin -> RE: The BD In BDSM Stands For Belly Dancong?! (1/22/2006 8:28:58 AM)

You go girl!!! And all of you who are taking up the veils and zils, you rock!

I have a natural talent for some of the movements and took basics and advanced some years ago. I tried it again last summer under a teacher and wound up aggravating a knee injury. I won't try it again until I can get something done about this knee.

I so identify with the "cow coming out of a mudpit" image, so I think I will avoid floor work, but veil work - yummy!

i'd add my name on that list, candy.. Somehow i think i'd get more outta these lessons than the 10 years of ballet and tap i took as a kid so i'd learn how to walk without tripping ... lol.
