I can't remember the last time a democrat bent over to take it from Colbert.

DedicatedDom40 -> RE: Limbaugh's latest attacker: RNC's Steele (3/4/2009 8:10:48 AM)

Anybody know the official demographics of Rush's audience?  Any links to stats?  These would really tell the tale about the potency of his operation.

I suspect they are mostly single, older men with no children or families who feel marginalized by the tax system that favors married households and families. With limited or no family obligations, they probably spend money on large, fuel inefficient vehicles, and expect cheap gas to fuel their 'babies'.

Show me one place on this thread where anyone argues that Limbaugh should be denied the right to spout his crap.

But he and conservative talk radio saved AM radio.  They really did, and it pisses American liberals off.

They save AM radio in an I-Pod world.  And that, alone, could not be a better metaphor for individuals possessing limited capabilities for progress.

Geee ... talk about a transparent straw man attack ...

You admit total ignorance on his audience ... and then proceed to attack an audience on which you make up ....

I googled a bit .  Didn't spend a lot of time, just wanted a quick look-see if there was anything.  You can certainly find your own numbers and info, and we can proceed to discuss his real audience, rather than your imaginary one.

Survey Reports

Online Papers Modestly Boost Newspaper Readership

Extracts:

Looking at specific news outlets and sources, men significantly outnumber women in the regular audiences for business magazines, political magazines such as The Weekly Standard and New Republic, Rush Limbaugh's radio program, and also the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. For each of these, men constitute more than 60% of the audience. Men are also significantly more numerous (at 58%) among the regular viewers of CNBC and C-SPAN and among daily internet news consumers. They are also disproportionately represented in the audience for talk radio, for literary and political magazines such as the Atlantic and New Yorker, and for late night television.

By contrast, women constitute a much larger share of the audience for religious radio (66% of the regular audience), the morning network television news shows (64%), and for the MSNBC cable channel. They also outnumber men among the regular audiences for TV news magazine shows such as Dateline and 60 Minutes, and for Larry King Live.

News audiences vary widely in age, education, and how much they know about what's going on in the nation and the world. Most regular consumers of news are better informed, better educated, and older than the average American. But the audiences for some news sources stand out in this respect.

Judged by their answers to three news knowledge questions, the most informed audiences belong to the political magazines, Rush Limbaugh's radio show, the O'Reilly Factor, news magazines, and online news sources. Close behind are the regular audiences for NPR and the Daily Show.

Audiences with the highest educational achievement, by far, are the literary magazines and online news outlets. Readers of news magazines, political magazines and business magazines, listeners of Rush Limbaugh and NPR, and viewers of the Daily Show, and C-SPAN also are much more likely than the average person to have a college degree.

Some of these attentive and educated audiences also are older than average. The oldest audiences belong to the NewsHour (60% age 50 or older), the O'Reilly Factor (58%), Larry King Live (56%), network nightly news (54%), and Sunday morning talk shows (52%). The youngest audience though also one of the most knowledgeable belongs to the Daily Show, where just 23% are age 50 or older and 33% are under age 30. [emphasis added]

Gee.  And The O'Reilly Factor is even mentioned!

"Men are also significantly more numerous (at 58%) among the regular viewers of CNBC and C-SPAN and among daily internet news consumers. Talk radio in general is 35% age 50 and older, Rush is 51% age 50 and older. So, yes, he does attract older male audiences.

63% of Rush's audience lacks a college education. Again, no surprise there.

KaineD -> RE: Limbaugh's latest attacker: RNC's Steele (3/4/2009 8:50:10 AM)

Just the fact that some Republicans here would attempt to defend Rush and defend Steele for bending over and taking it from Rush is very telling.

Rush is harmful to the republican party.  He's making party members look weak, he looks like he's the one in control, and he's pushing away all the sane, level headed people.

kittinSol -> RE: Limbaugh's latest attacker: RNC's Steele (3/4/2009 8:52:27 AM)

"The news consumption survey also found that Limbaugh's audience included a greater share of men than the audiences for any other news or opinion outlet included in the survey. Fully 72% of those who said they regularly listen to Limbaugh were men while just 28% were women. (...) "

Fascinatingly, 80% of Limbaugh's audience describe themselves as 'conservative'. Who said 'niche market' [:D] ?

In a partisan world, he is good news for the progressive side of the country, but Limbaugh and his ilk are fast disappearing anyway: their irrelevance will only increase over the next few years. What you are witnessing on this board is the swan song of a dying specie.

hmmm .... Stephen Colbert .... Bill Maher ... John Stewart .... George Carlin ...

Why no outrage when they do (did, in Carlin's case) the same?

Firm

Because none purport themselves to be anything but comedians.

Because the Democratics have never proclaimed any of them to be political "leaders" as Steele did.

Because while Colbert and Stewart are liberally slanted they also poke fun at Democrats, including Obama.

Maher has his roots as a comedian though his shows are more serious.  But even he makes an effort to include at least one or two conservative panelists on every show.

If you want to say Limbaugh is a comedian or entertainer I have no problem with what he says.

When people start taking him seriously and calling him a conservative leader then I think the Republicans have some serious issues.

My favorite current Rushism was his saying that the National Organization of Women spoke out to say it was ok with the Muslim doctor who beheaded his wife when she filed for divorce. According to Mr Limbaugh, NOW stated that is was just a matter of "cultural differences". Of course, in a statement aired on a less....how to put this nicely....less bullshit radio show, the head of NOW had no problems in stating without equivocation that her organization took a dim view of the beheading of women no matter that the culture of the beheader.

Way to go Rush....keep on feeding the fear, taking the drugs and popping the viagra. The cons need something to believe in and the rest of us can use the laugh.

Your favorite rushism.....you mean you actually spend time listening to him? Now that's funny. Personally I wouldn't waste my time, but if that is how you want to spend yours....enjoy.

And no kittin....he isn't the leader and he doesn't represent anyone but himself. There are a lot of conservatives who don't listen to him or really care what he has to say. What does amaze me is the number of people on this board who say they are on the left but not only listen to him, but quote what he says to others. Those listeners are part of the reason he gets such a high salary and is heard on so many radio stations in the country.

Keep up the good work spinner, I know he enjoys the record number of listeners and is grateful your one of them.

Hardly.  The current Administration and Congress gives "his ilk" great fodder.  He and "his ilk" will actually increase both their audience and impact, unless they are legislated out of existence.

Then you shouldn't have any problem with what he says.

Like any entertainer who uses the culture and politics as both a source and as targets for his work, he may have an impact - even be recognized for his impact - but he is still nothing more than an entertainer.

DedicatedDom40 -> RE: Limbaugh's latest attacker: RNC's Steele (3/4/2009 9:07:07 AM)

O'Reilly stats are even worse, with 58% older than age 50, and only 27% college educated.

Its interesting how all "gripe media" programs bring such a small percentage of college educated audiences, and a corresponding high percentage of non-college types. That pretty much proves Kittensol's point that the largely liberal college educated crowd has no interest in any of this, and thus explains why there is no money to be made in liberal alternatives to conservative talk radio.

You are attacking the education level of his audience with your smarmy remarks, yes.

Your "no surprise there" is intended as an insult, was it not?  Casting his audience as "undereducated".  However, your obvious slanting of the statistics is dishonest, and a perfect example of how most of the "anti-Rush" posters attempt to justify their opinions: based on deceit or ignorance.

Assuming that "only" 37% of Rush's audience are college educated, how do the other surveyed media rank?  Let's take the ones that are generally seen as "liberal":

NPR: 38% ... likely within the margin of error, don't you think?

The Daily Show: 37%.  hmmm, I guess if Rush's audience is uneducated ... so are the fans of The Daily Show, huh? [:)]

NewsHour: 30% ... OMG ... obvious idiots, huh?!

Nightly Network News: 20% ... ooohhhh, scrapping the bottom of the barrel, now, aren't we?

Larry King Live: 30% ... no comment .... too many women ...

Letterman/Leno: 24% .... more likely Leno has a higher share of the educated audience than Letterman, but that just a guess ...

MSNBC: 31% ... go figure ...

You can look at some other issues in the chart ...

Bottom line ... you are seeing and saying what you want, not what actually is.
