WestBaySlave -> An interesting Sartre quote, reprinted without comment... (3/2/2009 10:59:51 AM)

"HOEDERER: Don't talk so much about discipline. I distrust people who always have that word on their lips.
HUGO: I need discipline.
HOEDERER: Why?
HUGO [wearily]: There are too many ideas in my head. I must get rid of them.
HOEDERER: What sort of ideas?
HUGO: "What am I doing here? Am I right to want what I want? Am I really just kidding myself?" Ideas like that.
HOEDERER [slowly]: I see. Ideas like that, eh? And at this moment your head is full of them?
HUGO [uneasily]: No.-No, not at this moment. [A pause.] But they might come back. I have to protect myself. By installing other thoughts in my head. Assignments: "Do this. Go. Stop. Say such and such." I need to obey. To obey, just like that. To eat, sleep, obey."

Jean-Paul Sartre also wrote: "l'enfer, c'est les autres," ("Hell is other people.") - the most famous line from his play "No Exit," of course.  So I'm having fun putting that together with the quote you provided.  I guess one interpretation would be to take care about who you pick to discipline you. LOL. I wonder if Simone de Beauvoir disciplined her Jean-Paul. What a lovely thought!

God, I miss those days ! Being young, dumb and full of cum and myself and sitting around cafes, with my book on existential phenomenology always with me, discussing Sarte, Camus and other shit while French inhaling Gitanes and sipping espresso...

Now...just a little mud for my turtle gives life all the meaning I require.

Personally, I have no use for existential philosophy. I like Sartre, but I prefer the Absurdist playwrights: life sucks and then you die, but you might wait aimlessly or get turned into a rhinoceros along the way. [:D]

I disagree that life sucks. Of course, we all die, but life is what you make it.

Be careful, you may wake up to find that you are a cockroach on your own ceiling. Now that would suck ! [;)]

Oooh the imagery that conjured! [:D]

Do tell, camille, we are being existential in our imagery here. Plus, I have a boner now.
