i know plenty of sub/slaves that are dumber than a box of rocks, yet, they always manage to get and stay in relationships[sm=cactus.gif]

Kana -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 5:18:56 PM)

P.S.: Purely as an aside
I just read the OP's profile
Ya know...
I have lots of friends who for one reason or another didn't do well at school.
I didn't when I was younger-too wild, too rebellious, too much a free thinker.
I went back at 32, two degrees later I am heading for a JD.

There's lots of reasons people don't fit in school
Sometimes its something physical like ADD or Dyslexia
Others its about temperament or mindset
Some folks just can't sit still that long or weren't made for desks

I have a buddy, he's never read a book in his life
I mean I am talking he didn't finish See Spot Run
But he can listen to your engine for two minutes and tell you what's wrong with your car
I can't do that
I think everyone is smart
It just is in different ways

pinkwind -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 5:37:13 PM)

i took academic education and research as far as i wanted to, as far as it held my attention and gave me something to piss off certain relatives with, and once i achieved all i had set out for i lost interest. All i have left are a title and a few letters that i don't use unless they are the only things that will open the odd door, and an expansive mind that's like a black hole!

What counts just as much, perhaps more, to me are life's lessons learned, experiences gained, and what cumulative goals and milestones have brought me to right now.

i think that anyone should take their education seriously, no matter how far up the academic pole they climb, but not let it get in the way of living life somehow. It is the mix of all life's input that makes us what we are, all experiences have some import, education one facet.

DarkSteven -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 5:37:58 PM)

Depends on the reason.  I've known some who were never able to finish school due to needing to work.

In your case, it seems like you dropped out of HS and are taking time off, not working or going to school, while you stay at your parents and try to find yourself.  I'd have concerns about a sub who had no direction.  Of course, you may grow out of it yet.

Jeptha -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 5:45:27 PM)

I think it's important to be thoughtful, to have an active imagination and a questioning intellect and to be curious...
It's important to pursue your interests and educate yourself, as well as learn about yourself.

But a diploma, not so important.

As others have mentioned, it's important to many employers, however.

Edit to add; I'm actually a little anti-diploma in some ways. I sometimes meet people who feel entitled to jobs because they have college degrees. It seems to me that they are not so much better qualified, but that they have bought their way into the system.

I think people should have to compete straight up for those positions.
It would be nice if everybody could pursue formal education, but it is cost prohibitive for many ... or perhaps, most.
The system is stacked slightly against those who educate themselves, and I have a little bit of a problem with that.

Racquelle -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 5:47:48 PM)

OP, you want us to insult and call you stupid to get off on the humiliation?

BadJezebel -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 6:02:11 PM)

I think that a healthy couple should share a similar level (not necc type) of intellect.  How can you connect with someone if you can't communicate with each other?

littlewonder -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 6:05:21 PM)

I don't care how many degrees someone has, I don't care if they know how to build a nuclear reactor.

I do care though that they can hold an intelligent conversation. If they can't then they'll just bore me.

I have friends who have never finished grade school. I have friends who have one degree after another and they all are intelligent in their own ways about something or other.

It's not about how many books you've read.
It's about the knowledge you've gained in your life experiences.

LATEXBABY64 -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 6:08:24 PM)

have you ever read through frobes most richest people look at some of the education back ground   I think it is just applying your self to what ever you do

GreeneGoddess -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 6:34:31 PM)

I have a Master's degree, as does my slave....I do require a potential sub to have a bachelor's degree AND a decent career.   My slave and I both work very hard - having careers that we're passionate about AND financial stability are very important to both of us, and those are values that anyone who joined our family would have to share.

Formal education isn't the only way to go, however, those "pieces of paper" do open up a lot of options, AND there's a lot of value in much of what is taught.

Honestly - without even a HS diploma, you're going to face some very difficult times in supporting yourself and pulling your weight financially in a relationship.   We're living in a society that is not only facing some very difficult economic times, but also one that pretty much demands a two income household to achieve any kind of financial stability.  BDSM based relationships aren't any different.  You want the turbo charged iPod and expensive sneakers, then you need to earn the money to pay for them AFTER you've put a roof over your head and food on the table.

Its less about education and more about intelligence.
Stupid people bore me, which means they won't last long in my life.
But if she has an inquisitive mind and is a good conversationalist, shrugs, I don't care.
Can she capture my mind as well as my cock and heart?
That's a requirement for me.

If she is smart and willing, I can teach her.
I've had girls do assignments, read Plato, or Aristotle
And tested them on it.

Course the Twue Dom answer is what do I care, She can't talk with a dick in her mouth.

Jeez, Kana, you saved me some typing again.  :>  What he said but the girl version, regardless of side of the kneel or lack there-of.

Please don't take this the wrong way... it's not meant to be bitchy, but we all worked VERY HARD to get those pieces of paper. We didn't BUY them we WORKED for them. I spent time away from my family, and many hours writing and researching all while working full time to get that Master's degree. The undergraduate was just as hard. NO ONE bought me anything. If we appear to be getting a bigger shake in the job, it's because we truly do have a basis for our knowledge. I am not saying you don't have any grounds for your position, but we have a proven work ethic that can't be beat. It's not easy to go through college. It takes stamina and work.

You may have educated yourself. SO go take college courses and see how you measure up. I am sure you will... You can do it too!

Lol, let me be the first in the anti-atomic fallout corner.  I have a lot of formal education; I have a post-Masters education, to be exact.  I could go on about various preceding academic achievements.  I do on occasion, particularly when I want to get on my 'high horse' about something and smack someone around with credentials.  Narcissism as personal amusement and crowd control< smile >.  I generally use my powers for good, though.
Yes, my degrees offer me particular jobs and licensure that isn't available to folks without such things.  Am I proud of those achievements?  Sure.  Do I have the student loans to show for them?  Yep, at last glance, I could've bought a sweet Lotus Elise fully loaded for what I currently owe.  Are they all that defines me?  God, no.  I honor my achievements but there are achievements yet to come.  Could I complete a degree with minimal effort?  Yep.  Have I?  Sure have.  I've actually sat in classes (or not) and figured out just how little I could do to achieve a grade acceptable to me 'cause it was more interesting than doing the 'straight A's thing' or because I was living life and viewing the classes as just a part, a means to an end.  Do I respect education?  Sure do.  And, I am always learning, be it formalized or otherwise.
There are lots of super groovy people in my life.  Some of them have educations that equal or surpass my own.  Some are still in grade school.  They all have beauty to offer!  :>

I AGREE Devan. I have friends and people near and dear to my heart who don't have degrees and are brilliant. I just also have people who think they can do MY job better without one and constantly tell me. I laugh it's the I coulda been... I coulda went to college, I coulda made more money... etc.

As far as your skating through school, you must be smarter than me! LOL I also went to school years ago when there weren't COMPUTERS! LOL oh my... no internet.... research on microfilm. AWFUL!!!

Well... I am done...

Maya2001 -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/3/2009 9:31:38 PM)

Over the coming years unemployment is going to soar, and when new jobs become available(even crappy ones) it means employers can be damn picky on who they are going to hire to fill those positions, which means they will look for people  who have shown dedication and effort an have set goals, who have proven they are not quitters and are motivated at bettering themselves

most factories here in Ontario will not hire someone who does not have a high school diploma,  even in the new auto plants when they do the mass hires  they are looking for people with a post secondary education    The reason they ignore the lower educated is to improved their odds of getting the most responsible workers and reduces the amount of employee turn over.

Many dominants are going to expect you to help support yourself with part of your earning going into an account in the event things do not work out   that you have a bit of a nest egg. Without your high school diploma  you  could be stuck working at jobs that do not pay enough to support yourself  and if you end up a single mom it can be quite the nightmare having to support them financially,

I as i talk about in my profile, i never really have gone on to anything after highschool and didnt even finish there. just curious to hear some opinions.

Like everything else, to some it's important to others it isn't. I doubt Val would consider someone who made being a drop-out part of their handle - even if they don't have much education for varying reasons, he wants someone who values education.

shornIvory -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/4/2009 4:29:55 AM)

shorn is of two opinions here, first a BA or BS is a ticket needed for many jobs, certainly Bill Gates is an exception but how many people are like that. shorn's job requires a Doctorate. However shorn has a friend who claims to have graduated from college on academic probation, yet is one of the most respected in his profession shorn has heard of. shorn's father in law and his second wife both have their Doctorates in the same profession and hope/wish to become as respected. He has taught classes they have taken.

shorn greatly enjoys shorns work as Professor, but enjoys shorn's work as nude dancer as well. shorn is a lil long in the tooth for that any more, so shorn is glad to have something to fall back on.

I agree again BUT i also disagree in that i have lost count of the times recently i have been told i'm over qualified for a job. I have no idea whether this is a UK thing but occasionally i wonder why the hell i bothered with those pieces of paper!!
I trained as a special needs support assisatant which apparently makes me over qualified to be a general classroom assistant.
I took my licensing examinations and ran pubs which apparently makes me over qualified to be a bar manager or bar maid.
Go figure !!

angelic -> RE: How important is education for submissives? (3/4/2009 5:04:25 AM)

Some folks are professional students.  I do not view an education as a sign of intelligence and just because someone has a degree or several degrees, does not mean they have any common sense.

I think at the very least, you should get your GED.  However, I am not one who believes that you have to have a degree in order to have a successful and fullfilling life.  For instance, if the stimulus package succeeds, construction is going to be a very good field to go into.  A person does not need a degree to be a welder.

I think people get degrees in a field they eventually want to work in.  Well, if you cannot find a job in that field, that degree really becomes just a piece of paper.
