Perfect sense.

I don't spend much time on support sites, partly for that reason. Too many folks on them don't seem 'real'... maybe they attract too many people just playing for sympathy or something.

But yes petal, other real people do have the same problem. Your niether alone, nor wierd, nor stupid.

Well, I just found out that I must have blood work done and I was trying to find a way to be able to do it. Those site have given me no help at all so far (as I said, tips such as "don't watch" or "just think about something else" don't work at all for me, they don't even scatch the surface)

It's a bit extreme, but have you considered oral sedation? You'll have to bring a driver with you because you won't be able to safely drive for the rest of the day.

Ask your doctor about Lorazepam. One 2 milligram tablet about an hour before the procedure and another 15 minutes before it should leave you in a state that if a raging tiger burst into the exam room you'd call it "nice kitty" and try to pet it.

This is just a suggestion to begin a dialogue with your doctor and not to be construed as medical advice. [chuckle] I'm a real doctor, not an MD.

I have asked for things like that and most doctors aren't willing to do it. I just have to find someone who will I guess.

And as far as the tiger goes, I may try to do that anyway

Johns suggestion is a good one and about the only thing that would work in my case.

I recently had a bit of a health scare and they did get one lot of bloods out of me when I was pretty spaced. But when they went to try a couple of hours later when I'd recovered a bit, the orderly suddenly descovered a healthy sense of self preservation (I did later appologise for shouting at him) and decided they would make do with the first lot.

Unless I'm fairly out of things then there is no way I can force myself to let them use the needle and am quite likely to strike out if pushed in that situation. Given I'm 6'2" and not of small build people do tend to take me somewhat seriously IF I can get them to actualy listen!

It is a great suggestion, I only have to find someone willing to do it. Most doctors don't want to prescribe anything for their patients that they don't feel is "neccisary" (which doesn't explain many 'scripts that they write, but then again, not everything in this world makes sense)

i also have a major major phobia of needles, and doctors in general. I spent a large chunk of childhood in hospitals, being poked and proded. i hyperventilate, cry, get sick to my stomach, have panic attacks, pretty much anything you can think of....the only think that hepls me get through it is to have someone there with me, and help me breathe, and distract me. i even actually find that letting myself cry helps...i feel like a major wussy, but it makes the panicy feeling lessen. I agree with you that not looking at it doesn;t help, you still know it's there. I hope you find something that helps, and let me know!! lol...i ahve to go for a round of tests in a few weeks, i am not looking forward to that
