Status: offline 		By an asteroid saturday! NASA says it was within 100K of the atmosphere, and was about 2 football fields wide/across. KABOOM!!!

2009 DD45, estimated to be between 21 and 47 meters (68 and 152 feet) across, raced by at 1344 GMT on Monday, the Planetary Society and astronomers' blogs reported... The gap was just 72,000 kilometers (44,750 miles)

Status: offline 		Supposedly had it landed it would have been similar to the hit from in Siberia about a 100 years ago...which was interesting to watch the info on History Channel about it.

In all seriousness though, I read about the near-miss this morning and it's some scary shit. Particularly frightening is that it was apparently kept shtum to prevent the general public from panicking (I hate being kept in the dark, unless it's inside a locked closet). But what happened to the 400 meter asteroid that was likely to hit us by 2029? I haven't heard about that bastard in a while.

It does take a few days to do the math and look at the pics to make sure of what it really was. I'm sure something ginormous would have been breaking news, but a small one, not so much. And aphosis will swing by in 29, and again in 36. If the moon is in a certain spot in 29, then there is like a 1:1000 chance it will hit in 36. Fun times.

I think that one that barely missed us a few years ago wasn't even detected until it had already passed, isn't that right? If I recall correctly, it had already swung past us and was on the way back out before somebody noticed it. But I may be mis-remembering it.
