4th Stryker Brigade returning to Iraq sooner
FORT LEWIS, Wash. (AP) -- The Defense Department says the 4th Stryker Brigade at Fort Lewis will deploy to Iraq this fall several months ahead of the original schedule. The Army said Monday the deployment was moved up to replace the 5th Stryker Brigade, also based at Fort Lewis. It was given a new mission last month to join the surge of 17,000 troops this summer in Afghanistan. The 4th Brigade was previously in Iraq from April 2007 to June 2008 as part of the troop surge. It has reset personnel and equipment and is beginning training. The commander, Col. John Norris, says about 2,500 of the 4,000 soldiers are Iraq war veterans.

There is a psychological explanation along the lines of sympathy fatigue.
+Every new administration has their honeymoon period with the media.

so saying US forces are stretched thin is actually an attack against the current administration.
So all those news story's the past several years were thinly veiled attacks against bush

Just the facts...

quote:

The president last week decided the U.S. will send 17,000 additional U.S. combat and support troops to Afghanistan. In a statement he said the deployment was “necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires.”
The U.S. has about 38,000 personnel in Afghanistan, and about 32,000 troops from other NATO members also are in the country. Source: AFGHANISTAN ESCALATION

I seem to remember that a major bone of contention and source of mockery to the prior Administration the inability to listen to the Generals deployed. Another policy of 'UN-CHANGE!'
quote:

United States President Barack Obama decided to approve only 17,000 of the 30,000 troops requested by General David McKiernan, the top commander of US and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops in Afghanistan, and General David Petraeus, the Central Command chief, after McKiernan was unable to tell him how they would be used, according to White House sources.

But Obama is likely to be pressured by McKiernan and the Joint Chiefs to approve the remaining 13,000 troops requested after the completion of an Afghanistan-Pakistan policy review next month. Source: NOT ENOUGH TO DO THE JOB

Maybe President Obama is following the 'Rambo III' model taking the Soviet side:
quote:

The Soviets never had more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan at one time. Depending on the outcome of the administration's policy review, the United States may have as many as 68,000 there, along with 32,000 troops provided by NATO allies, putting the total near Soviet levels.
RAMBO III

Meanwhile, a scheduled, but no moving vans in sight, withdraw from Iraq. Except for 50,000...
quote:

The administration now considers Aug. 31, 2010, the end date for Iraq war operations. That timetable is slower than Obama had promised voters, but still hastens the U.S. exit. Even with the drawdown, a sizable U.S. force of 35,000 to 50,000 U.S. troops will stay in Iraq under a new mission of training, civilian protection and counterterrorism.
Source: WE'LL BE THERE A WHILE

Cindy Sheehan must have cashed in all the chips she earned exploiting the death of her son in Iraq being a 'front man' for the special interests helping to put this Administration in power and is now living in comfortable retirement.

Folks,

Every story you`ve heard over the last 6 years of soldiers being "stop loosed" and redeployed for their 3rd,4th,5th tour,...is a story about forces being stretched to thin.

These arm-chair-chicken hawk generals back home, think there`s a never ending supply of men and money to spend like line items. It`s called hubris.

Ignore them.

I love it---we'll be drawing down forces, but we'll still keep 50,000 men there....this president is slicker than Slick Wille....

Who are you referencing? General Petraeus?

Now that we have a 'WAR' President in office - "all is well!" - All protests gone and/or discounted. 50,000 US soldiers deployed indefinitely. 55000 troops deployed and fighting in Afghanistan. No hypocrisy from prior representations from campaign rhetoric. Got it!

WOW - Linda Loveless as 'Deep Throat' (the movie not the whistle blower) couldn't swallow that much rationalization in one sitting.

Petraeus is not an arm-chair-chicken hawk general.

He`s a real general.

Let`s just say I`m refering to any bush suporter who has an issue with what I said.

General Petraeus, sourced from the Bush White House.

Maybe President Obama doesn't vacillate in confusion as you do and that's why he dismissed General Petraeus' troop recommendation, and instead only allocated 17,000 - for now.

I remember you taking President Bush to task for that quite often. Okay now though right?

I'm curious, you think that Obama just fell in love with Bush's policies after getting elected or was is always there just below the surface?
