Vendaval -> Nick Schuyler survives 46 hours at sea (3/4/2009 3:41:03 PM)

One of the football players whose boat capsized of the coast of Florida this past weekend is alive.  Schuyler has damage from knocking up against the boat and hypothermia of course.  But that any of them survived at all is amazing.

"TAMPA, FLORIDA (TICKER) —The attending physician for the lone survivor of a boating mishap off Florida’s Gulf Coast said it was a “miracle” that his patient withstood the 46-hour ordeal.

Nick Schuyler, a former football player at South Florida, was in “good condition” Wednesday, two days after he was plucked from the sea while clinging to an overturned fishing boat.

“To stay in the water for 46 hours, to be alive, I think is a miracle,” Dr. Mark Rumbak said during a Wednesday morning press briefing.

Three men, including two NFL players, were presumed dead after the Coast Guard announced it was suspending its rescue efforts at 6:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

Free agent defensive end Corey Smith, Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper and former South Florida football player Will Bleakley also were aboard the boat that capsized in rough seas on Saturday night."

It is amazing!
Hypothermia is the biggest danger, even in "warmer" water.

Yes, it definately is the biggest risk.  According to the reports he would not have survived without the tough physical training and mental endurance.

Well I think they all had that, at least the physical training part.

Sometimes it's just luck, or fate.

Luck or fate does play a part, only 1 out of 4 survived.

I've been watching since the beginning, hoping for a miracle. I was really thinking that they could hang on for a while and the coast guard could pluck them out.

We had a similar accident last year, out on the Oregon coast, but in much colder 51-degree water. Three middle-aged guys hung on to a 100-quart Igloo ice chest for about 6-8 hrs---- all but one made it.

Anyways....My thoughts go out to their family, friends and teammates.....

If I recall correctly, many of the most dangerous sports happen on or in the water.  But on the other hand there are all the extreme sports now and people are lost every year mountain climbing or hiking.

Heh.....For every one dude I can find to run class-five whitewater... I can find ten others who would rather sky dive...

Trust me....water can take you away like the sky and air never could [;)]

I heard they were 30 miles out, in a 21 foot boat.

Dumb.

I feel bad for the victims and their families.
