I'm a huge fan of Law and Order SVU and CI. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I try to catch the reruns of these on USA when I can. I've noticed recently that many of the episodes are geared towards BDSM related acts causing untimely death in murder victims. Out of the four episodes that I caught tonight while I was playing Scrabble, two of them were BDSM related. The first one was SVU, and the first scene was of a dead man in full fetish gear. They went into detail about his sexual preferences and practices. The second episode was also SVU and also involved a deceased woman in the lifestyle. I've been keeping a loose tab on how many episodes I've seen that have a BDSM theme this month, and so far it's been twelve. All of them have one other thing in common, a very negative view of the lifestyle. They portray it as a sick perversion. The topic has been coming up in a lot of crime shows recently, with the lifestylers always portrayed as either the victims or the killers. It would seem that we're getting an increasing amount of bad press recently, even if it is only fiction.

Have any of you noticed this trend? What are your thoughts on the matter?

I watch a lot of CSI, and I've noticed they've gota much more positive attitude toward alternative lifestyles.

A lot of the characters have personally negative opinions but lifestyles that fall outside the norm aren't presented as bad or evil just as personally distasteful. tHere are deaths associated with them, but most often the lifestyle is totally incedental.

I've also noteced that original Law and Order is much more "tolerant" of non-standard sexual expression. While many of the characters are very conservative, they are less likely to make comments about the "normality" of actions.

Heh, my Owner and I talk about this while we watch this stuff :)

I just happened to be watching a Law and Order, SVU tonight and it dealt with a sub being killed. The entire time it was on, all I heard was negative thought from the police dept about BDSM. Maybe someday it will be accepted, but then again, there is always going to be negative thoughts about something.
