Thank you Interesdom, you have encapsulated my thoughts regarding the difference in Americal Engmish and English/Australian English perfectly into a nutshell.

MstrTiger,

I understand that when someone uses words like all, none, and other quantifiers and generalities that exceptions exist. I do not need to be reminded of that. However, I do judge (poorly) those who use generalities, most notably when I cannot be 100% certain if they remembered that exceptions exist. This inability to articulate specifics bothers me.

Take, for instance, the "general you". When I cannot be sure if "you" is referring directly to me or to all readers, I am unimpressed.

Words mean whatever we decide they mean. An extreme example, if someone understood the word "hungry" to mean "pregnant", serious miscommunications would occur. I know thats absurd, but I use the example to reinforce the importance of agreeing on the definition of words. I try to be a literalist, but I'm a human too.

Work can be bogged down by over-clarification. I don't write stereo instructions, I write prose. I expect the audience to use common sense when reading. In the BDSM world, the difference between slave and submissive is a particularly touchy, wavering, inconsistent line. Unless discussing an issue where the difference is important, I expect the reader to look at the bigger picture. When talking about "Submissives cooking for diabetic masters", the words bottom, slave, pet, submissive, chef, cook are all interchangeable. This is certainly not true on a job interview for a restaurant.

The venue and audience determine which words need clarification.

Regarding miscommunications: Since humor, satire, sarcasm, insult, disapproval, compliment, etc. do not relay well in text, I always attempt to get a clarification on the matter before proceeding.

Life goes on.

Domiguy--I'm afraid My Lord might actually take that seriously. [;)]

My Lord calls the bushes in the backyard briars and brambles, I call them blackberries.  Neither of us are wrong.  They are both.  After one of my first posts here, someone got persnickety with me over the terminology I had used.  I posted a thread trying to understand the terminology, and got roasted for trying to pigeonhole people.  Hmm...damned if do....

In Illinois, I first heard people use the term "ignorant" to describe someone who had been rude to them.  ("Then he got all ignorant with me.")  I was befuckled by the term since I had never heard it used that way.  Everytime I provided the proper definition, I was treated like an uppity bitch.  I was right, but so were they.  Their meaning was obvious, no matter how retarded they sounded to me.

In Oregon, we say "Seriously" way too much, and innapropriately, and of this I am guilty.  As in, "He was so rude.  Seriously!  I mean, seriously, he could have been way nicer."

I am a sub/bottom/not quite a slave and My Lord is a dom/master/whateverthefuck you choose to call him.  I think if your meaning is clear, and the intent behind the words is conveyed, then those who find themselves being uppity bitches might try to stick to the intent behind the words, and not be so quick to flex their mental muscles to prove their intellectual superiority to us mere mortals in order avoid derailing other peoples threads.  I mean, seriously, if you're not my Mom, Dad, or English teacher, then try to respond to the thread instead of correcting me.

mho
