i know alot here use meditation to balance. i dont personally know very much about balance. The why certian things balance, what specifically we are balancing, or why it works. i was looking out the window today and the wind blew in across my face. The wind usually cleanses me. And tho (LOL) it didnt do it that time, i could feel it abit. What i find that usually works very well is taking a walk and being surrounded by nature. It has such a soul cleansing effect. i can feel myself become one with the world. i can feel my mind branch out, expand. As it does so, i find balance.

But then again, maybe i am just wierd. Can anyone else explain balance? The whys and wherefores of it? Now i know alot of ppl use mediation, but meditation is something i've never been able to understand. i cant fathom, sitting quietly and not having my brain run a mile a minute. i've tried.

The simplest explanation about "balance" in this context is that is a matter of restoring your perspective. Sometimes we get too focused on our problems, our goals, our careers, etc. that we lose our perspective on everything else. By taking a walk or meditating or doning something similar you're distracting yourself from the things you were so focused on long enough for your mind to return to that larger "more balanced" perspective. That's really all it is.

greetings riot
i know the reasons for meditation and the various philosophies give reason to find balance in meditation such as; the toaists find meditation is by doing nothing ;everything gets done ;so you free yourself of the worry of stress;and, of thinking;or having to think; or do otherwise;
the zen; feel desire ;any kind of desire; is pain ;and brings and causes pain if you desire; so to desire not to desire; is the best place to be ;so their point in mediation is; to find that place of nervana; or heaven; peace ;and balance ;and its only found by; lack of pain; which can only be found thru; no disire ;or having no desire; which is the perfect state to be,or youll always be out of balance;IF YOU GO ON wanting ;in a state of desire etc
christians religious belief ;where the focus in evolution; since it was a major step in evolution is; the concept of mercy ;
so
to mediate on having mercy; complete utter mercy ;for everyone ;is to be with god; be like god ;and to be at perfect balance with what god wants and is;...so we meditate and pray; to have all that mercy in us; to not be out of balance ;with gods' world; wishs;and creations;ie:
not be angry; envious; plagued by anger ;or hate ;nor revenge;
so it depends on which one philosophy ;you take as the perspective; or purpose for mediation; to achieve balance ;aka oneness; with yourself and ;the way its supposed to be;....
others universally think ;with practice ;you can achieve all purpose mediation ;and nervana ;which is the ultimate goal of all meditation; and so called ballance is acheived by practicing to think nothing ;and do it for longer and longer periods;so; you get good at meditating;so; if you need it ;when in severe pain; or in a state of disaster; or extreme pain,you can more easily meditate ;and NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO THINK AT ALL ABOUT ANYTHING ;no pressing thots;no emotions;nothing;no one can even psych you out psychologically;and tip the scales ;and put you ,off-balance to win;
so
you think nothing; just green vallies and ,rolling hillls ;or green leafy vegtibles ,if your on a diet ;you always use visualization-techniques ;to think about nothing ;and meditate;
there are great TAPES,AND,cds out there called; forced-meditation ;where you listen and are forced into automatic meditation ;you have no choice;you can leave and turn it off but it echoes in your mind;so you can think of nothing else but the meditation of the om;or the pyramid doors closing;or the animal calls of nature;ie:
one is the om
its all the sounds at the end of the world ;at the same time; so you hear everyone and nothing ;no one at a time;
by gregorian chants;
then there's; king aesops temple;the sound of the great pyramid,inside;the 12 chambers of the golden pyramid tape or cd; where you go down; further and further ;into the inside of the actual chambers of the pyramid; hearing each door close ;as you travel further inside ;then
.... theres my favorite ;altho it maybe somewhat emotive; by some guy named peter or george or something winter,
imitating animals, with his wind-instruments; my favorite is,' WOLF EYES',
;HE SOUNDS exact; like the wolf-call ;with the wolf first; then his sax; afterwards;
and, you hear the eagle;and the whale; on other sepparate songs; with other flutes, or horns ,that sound like the animal ,as close as it sounds to the actual animal calls, in nature.
meditaion reaches balance first; but ,the goal is heaven ,or nervana.
in psychobiology we reach a depressive state of brain waves called 14 or less megahurts which is supposedly the most creative possible brainwaves to have in order to achieve our most creative possible thot waves required to produce something really creative;its less brain waves than sleep as measured by the eeg-machine,almost akin to a deep hypnotic sleep called: synambulism;achieved by practiced yoga persons;who not only meditate ;and slow down all their body processes; by breathing less;but also strive for a perfect body positon called; the lotus posture ,aka perfect body alignment ,and the straightest possible back- bone ;or posture you can possibly achieve; in a simutaneous meditative brain state;you can stay in a coffin ;with little need for repositioning ;or physical requirements ,as would be necessary , in a fully awakened state ,or a normal, or hyper state requiring a high bmr( basil metabolism rate).
here's ,to "nervana";
i need a mistress ,to begin to focus ,aka
GOD....

Meditation really isn't about making the brain stop...it's more about watching the brain do what it does and reflecting on that.

In order to watch what the brain does, you have to settle yourself down and focus.

In order to acheive balance, you first have to open your eyes and take good clear perspective on the state of affairs. Then you can begin to focus and take a look at it.

The metaphor I always use is imagine a 3-D sculpture turning slowly around. At each angle there is a new perspective, a new piece that fits into the whole.

That's just one description, there are a million different ways to meditate and a million different ways to describe it. But they all involve focus and being aware.

Hmmm.....I would say that meditation is about making OURSELVES stop. Our brains will not stop till we are dead. However, there are many methods that will stop the noise from distracting us from seeing what we may need to see or show us things that we have never considered......or give us a moment of quiet.

I meditate every day. If I didn't I'd be nuts.

This is the best explanation that you are going to find. It is just a way of 'clearing the mind' so that you can see the bigger picture...so to speak

A teacher of mine taught me how to meditate when I was in junior high. After lunch, my classmates and I couldn't focus on our studies. We were still going a mile a minute. Our teacher (Mrs. Peterson) led us in guided meditation (which she learned during her last pregnancy).

I did a very similar meditation in my yoga class. It helps to have it guided or narrated to you, and then allow yourself to simply follow directions. It begins with letting your legs go numb, then your arms and neck, dropping your head and breathing slowly.

Of course, if you're alone, the best meditation I've found, that keeps me balanced and calm, is to do tai chi.

I didn't believe in mediation when I was first exposed to it. However, my friends told me about and I just asked how you do it. I question everything but will try just about anything to make sure. I never learned any of the philosphy behind it or any descriptions of it beforehand, just one technique. Because I didn't want to trick myself by preknowing what the experience would be.

Here is what I did and still do, to mediate. I simply stare at a single point, not looking at it, but just viewing in that direction. You don't want to analyze the wall or count the tiles, just view it like you are daydreaming and not really seeing it. Then I focus only on my breathing, not controlling it, but just feeling it happen. The tricky part is when you do this all kinds of thoughts will enter your mind, interfering with your meditation, the key is to not examine any of them, just let them flow. After a length of time, depending on your experience level, the thoughts subside, and you are just left with an awareness of yourself. No thought awareness, just a feeling of being in touch with your whole body. It does feel very good to do this physically and mentally, and also when you are done, It always fills me with a peaceful feeling, that I proceed immediately to screw up by being me. LOL.

It's a worthwhile endevour, It took me a few weeks before, I was able to get to an undeniable meditative state. With mediation, you either will 100% be sure you experienced it or you didn't. It is really a unique experience, and me not being religious is the closest thing I've experienced that seemed truly spirtual. I can't comment on other approaches but the point of most is to provide you with one point of focus, either it be a sound, breathing, chant, something that the subconscience and conscience can unilaterly focus on until the conscience gives way to purely subconscience thought, and that is when you are meditating. Once mediating you are aware and still there, but it is like looking at things, and feeling is much more precise, and deep. The conscience state feels as deep as a small pond and meditation feels like the ocean.

LOL, It happens to the best of em. Actually, to be serious, that was my real problem initially as I was trying before I'd go to bed. Best, to try when you are wide awake.

That's actually extremely common and considered perfectly normal and ok with meditation. I know after I took a kriya course a few years ago, they pretty much told us all to expect to fall asleep by the end of each session, and most of us did.

I also got one of the worst colds of my life (damn cleansing).

Yes, fallen asleep happens. I have fallen asleep numorous times while meditating.

I was introduced to meditation as an alternative to pain medication after a severe whiplash many years ago. The meds made me violently ill & after many prescription changes the doctor turned me onto meditation.

I have used the same methods in many other stressful or painful situation in life. I used it with all three child births & pain meds were not used.
