Schools do not have janitors any more, they are called custodians or maintanance engineers.
It is not surprising: unemployment among uneducated low-skilled people is high. New York city gets usually several thousand applications per position for garbadge collector jobs.

Nice supercilious snark from some "special" individual that can't even spell, use proper grammar or punctuation. Bet those Sanitation workers make twice or three times your salary. Personally acquainted with several. They're home owners in white collar neighborhoods as well as possessing multiple vehicles. Can you make the same claim?

I believe it. I knew a guy back home who was a trash collector for a private firm. "Only" a high-school education, but by 20 he and his girlfriend had put a down payment on a small house in a *very* expensive part of the country. Since all his work was done early in the morning (something like 4am-noon), he also did landscaping in the summer, and plowed snow in the winter... smart guy with hustle. And as a bonus, he was *ripped* from hauling those cans around. There are a lot of white-collar workers I have a lot less respect for.

Speaking with the hubris of someone who beat 154 other applicants for a technical job years ago (I not only aced, but rewrote their aptitude test) I still covet the job of a garbage man. I know someone who was and you should've seen all the goodies in their garage.

They had yard sales a couple times a year and pocketed thousands, they always had the best junk !

Another job that is alot better than it sounds is working at a junkyard prepping cars to go into the crusher. These guys have found guns, drugs, money, jewelry, all kinds of things.

Me too - If only I had been an early riser!
I think that would have been a cool job back east, where people put everything including the kitchen sink out by the curb on (the eve of ) garbage day.

As far as janitorial work goes, our school systems have gone to private companies for their janitorial, and other branches of government contract with private firms that "rehab" employees. It may have been sweet in the old days, but these janitors are not making much, believe me.

Every job is honorable but people with skills should use their skills.  Life is not all about making money or grabbing extensive benefit packages.

I do not have a ready answer for that dear.  But one outcome from govern. positions paying well + good benefits is a decrease in employee turn over.  Is that good or bad in the long term perspective?

Any job that is gover. funded usually has benefits and a retirement plan.

And that is where I run into a philosophical problem, Ven.  Should the public servants be getting a better deal than the public they serve?

Well ~ I believe that it could be an ethical conflict if senators, for example, receive lifetime healthcare benefits for themselves and their families while their constituents receive none...

Who needs to rise early? Just go to bed after work and rise at 10pm :D

Are you saying the government should be dictating employee compensation, Gigs?

Not at all.  It's the private sector that came up with offering these benefits to attract and retain good employees.  Govt followed suit because it also needed to attract and retain good employees.  Govt is rarely the leader in this kind of thing.

What I'm saying is that these things still help to attract and retain good employees.

Here's the deal...the gov't already does dictate employee compensation....minimum wage...it's for a good reason. Otherwise private companies could continue to fuck their employees with sub-standard wages.

The custodians at my school are all union members, and they earn a decent living wage.
Between the salary and the benefits {including a pension plan}, I totally understand why
people would want to get any full time/permanent job in the school system.

I have worked graveyard shift jobs before. Two different times, for a year each.
It was interesting; going to watch the sunrise after work, then going home and watching cartoons and eating a bowl of cereal...and then going to bed.

I've always been a bit of a night owl, but I'm trying to switch that around a little and not miss so much of the mornings these days.

I wonder if they'll hire someone with a master's degree like Starbuck's does?
"Hey you with the MBA, two lattes no sugar and make it snappy I have a huuuuge merger and aquisition going down today!"

How does that follow saying that the public should get it as good as the public servants?

My solution to this is fairly radical.  I think about 90% of all public sector employees should be replaced with high turnover young people, doing their national service obligation, and that most public sector unions should be outlawed.

Now that is just plain poppycock, Jen.  Determining the minimum wage is a long way from dictating compensation.  That law is kinda nice if you are young and/or unskilled, but the minimum wage rules have precisely nothing to do with what I make, or when I get a raise.  The last job I took at minimum, I was at that pay scale for one shift.  The gov't didn't bump me a buck an hour after 8 hours.

Let's see...become a janitor.  Yup, that's on my bucket list.  [sm=mop.gif]
