I just heard on the news, there is a job opening for a school janitor in Eviston, Illinois.
Before you all run out and apply, 700 people have applied for the 1 job.

Another reason, why I have been going to work early and staying late.

I'm curious as to how the job was advertised. If it was posted on an internet job board or some such, then 700 applicants isn't surprising. Just like here, there is a lot of applicant spamming. You post *any* job on, say Monster.com, and you are likely to get hundreds of applicants (of which a handful might be qualified).

On the other hand, if it was just a local newspaper posting, then there might be something to it. It also might just be a sign of the near panic that is brewing over the economy.

Not surprising, Mia.  As janitorial positions go, this is the top of the mountain.  Nobody pays toilet scrubbers as well as gov't.  Hell, I bet there is even a retirement plan.

There is always a federal retirement plan, otherwise it's called a 401K and one just hopes wall street doesn't blow it again...which they could of course. Actually the janitor position in the federal govt. pays about at or lower than much of private industry although I am sure he would enjoy better benefits.

It isn't until you get into most long term white collar positions that the feds pay more and sometimes...a whole lot more than private industry when all factors are considered.

But as for the OP I am surprised Mia that you hadn't heard of the PART TIME secretary/receptionist job in DC that drew 3500 resumes and it was in private industry.

I haven't seen any story concerning a janitor position in Eviston, Illinois.  I did see a story about 700 applicants for a janitor position in Massilon, Ohio:

http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/40894767.html

MzMia, there isn't even a town called Eviston, Illinois.  Now there is an Evanston, Illinois......but no Eviston.  I just thought I'd clear that up for you.

Good catch. I didn't even notice that when I searched for the story. Considering the current times, I wouldn't be surprised if this story develops an urban legend quality to it.

Damn, the newspaper I linked to spelled the city name incorrectly.  It's actually Massillon, Ohio.  Anyway, it doesn't surprise me.  Massillon is in the Rust Belt.  A lot of folks are looking for work in that region.  As jobs go, a school janitor position is a pretty good gig.  A friend of mine worked as a school janitor and bus driver for a year after completing his MA in education.  He was waiting for a teaching gig to open up.  School janitors here make around 30k a year, with full medical and a pension.  Not a bad gig at all.

Schools do not have janitors any more, they are called custodians or maintanance engineers.
It is not surprising: unemployment among uneducated low-skilled people is high. New York city gets usually several thousand applications per position for garbadge collector jobs.

And that is where I run into a philosophical problem, Ven.  Should the public servants be getting a better deal than the public they serve?

Now that raises an interesting point vis-a-vis the unemployment rate.

Generally, public office positions (from Town Selectman on up to US President) have relatively few applicants- maybe a dozen at most.

With so many people out of work, surely we should start seeing the quality of candidates improve? I mean, some of those are pretty sweet gigs, but historically the applicants have left a lot to be desired...

No.  I think that the public should be getting the same deal.

Nice supercilious snark from some "special" individual that can't even spell, use proper grammar or punctuation. Bet those Sanitation workers make twice or three times your salary. Personally acquainted with several. They're home owners in white collar neighborhoods as well as possessing multiple vehicles. Can you make the same claim?

Not everyone in a Civil Service position is uneducated and low skilled. Now, excuse me while I go gloat over my extensive benefits package...

Are you saying the government should be dictating employee compensation, Gigs?
