 . . . . smile as they are walking past one?  When I first noticed this - seriously - I used to check that my flies were properly zipped. 

I don't think that they smile as they walk by me because of some pleasant thought about myself.  If only. 

Do women go around making an effort to think about things that make them smile?  Men's usual expression is either blank or thoughtful - as though they're trying to work something out.  They don't walk around smiling, though - ever.  I've never noticed a man with that faint, half-smile, on his face.

I personally smile at everyone I notice when I'm walking... just an acknowledgment of their presence.  I hate walking along and feeling invisible, and I figure most people feel the same.

Well smile back... walk a bit slower and give a second look... not stare... just in case... you know?  I smile for all sorts of reasons... mostly not about an open fly though... well unless he is mine and I get to do more than tell him to close it.

I only do it when I make eye contact with someone--male, female, child, no matter. I don't carry around a smile just to keep My muscles in shape.

i do it to be polite and friendly.  no alterior motives.  geesh, i hope i don't start second guessing all the smiles i come across in a day.

In my part of the world you are lucky if you even make eye contact with someone, I blame the Mobile Phone. The only way you can talk to someone is via the mobile, it wasn't like this in my day no sur reee. We were lucky if we had phone cards and a local phone box was free, and there was none of that texting business no we had to learn touch tone/fax language to get a text message to someone via a fax machine if we didn't want to verbally commune.

I am one of those that smiles at people randomly and also often walks around with a big smile on my face as well for no reason at all.  If someone catches my eye as we walk past I give them a smile and hope that their day has been made a little brighter by this anonymous interaction.

I smile all the time.  I giggle most all the time, too.  I have a treasure trove of memories of funny things that I call on throughout the day to bring me joy.  I'm also raised down South.  We're friendly, well most are.  I also smile when I'm on the phone.  It's something people can hear through the receiver.  [:)]

Women are raised to smile and to blink, to be cute and attractive and 'pleasing' (what a joke). Men are raised to not show too much and to look as blank as possible. It's cultural: you'd be out of your mind with worry if all the women you encountered looked at you without a smile and a blink. In fact, I bet you that you'd be on these boards wondering why they were all so manly looking all of a sudden [8|] .

I try to smile at everyone.  It may be the only smile they see during that day.  It has nothing to do with their sex appeal, or whether I want them or not.

Here in West By God Virginia people smile and greet each other all the time.  We say hello to strangers and start up conversations.  I feel really bad when I travel and people look at me like I should be locked up.
But it could be because you're hot.  I'm going to perv your profile right now.
