Vendaval -> Breaking news, shooter in Maryville, Ill. Church (3/8/2009 3:05:48 PM)

Another church shooting, this time in Illinois.  The pastor was shot, 2 church members wounded by a knife while trying to subdue him.  The congregation did not recognize the attacker and the motive is unknown.

"Church pastor killed during service, police say"
3/08/09

"(CNN) -- The pastor of a Maryville, Illinois, church was shot to death during a service Sunday in front of horrified parishioners who then tackled the gunman, state police said.

Fred Winters, the pastor of the First Baptist Church, was shot and killed during the 8 a.m. service, and the attacker and two parishioners suffered knife wounds in the attack, authorities said.

The gunman entered during the service and walked up to the pulpit.

Winters and the gunman apparently exchanged words before the 27-year-old man fired four shots, hitting the pastor's Bible and then the pastor, said Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent.

"The only thing we know is that the suspect said something to the pastor and the pastor said something back to him -- we don't know what that was," Trent told reporters Sunday afternoon. "It was almost as if the pastor may have recognized him, but we're not sure about that at all."

The gunman's .45-caliber pistol jammed after he shot Winters, Trent said. The man then pulled out a knife before being tackled by some of the approximately 150 worshippers attending the service in southern Illinois, near St. Louis, Missouri."

Wow. Talk about living out a dream!

I cannot begin to think of the countless hours of my youth that were completely wasted, spent stuck in a pew fantasizing about shooting the bible clean out of the good reverend's hand.

Now the killing part does seem a tad bit extreme.  But I believe I would have done my time in "Juvie" and been released a better, wiser and more spiritual man.

Well that's sad.  My own experiences with Baptists have not been pleasant ones.  About 12 years ago, I was dating a girl that went to a Baptist church.  I reluctantly agreed to attend Wednesday night services with her.  Like an idiot, I signed the guestbook.  Two days later, the pastor and assistant pastor showed up at my house.  The first question out of his mouth was, "If you died today, do you know where you're going?"  My reply was priceless, "Well since I love dancing, drinking, and premarital sex...I reckon I'll be going to Hell.  If you should make it down there, I'll be the one with a lemonade stand"  I was told by my girlfriend that the entire church prayed over her to get her away from me.  Baptists are just cute.

Is dancing evil? I'll have to ask UPS he knows about these things.[8|]

Quite a few churches proclaim that dancing is indeed, going to send you to Hell.

Even the Waltz?

You would have to ask specific sects of particular churches.

What if I naturally walk funny in a kind of 1 2 2 1 2 2 style and there just happens to be music playing in the background?[8|]

I grew up around Southern Baptists.  Believe me, the dancing prohibition is small potatoes compared to some of their other beliefs.  However, I consider them liberal compared to the Pentecostals I grew up with.

Well, I'm afraid that Domiguy's compassion and sensitivity escape my grasp on this one.  I wanted the whole place to go up in flames with Ozzy playing a live show in the parking lot.

We have a "First Conservative Baptist Church" down here...talk about an oxymoron...

That said,  it is a shame it happened.  But it is interesting that the guy was taken down by church members instead of  waiting for the police....

The sad thing now is how lawmakers are trying to write yet another bill to stop this from ever happening again.  We should pass a law that says no laws can be written until 120 days after tragic event to stop it from ever happening again.

There is nothing you can do to stop nuts like this, creating a "new law" will not stop this from happening in the future, because if that is true.  Then there should be no shoplifting, no murder, no kidnapping taking place because there are laws against them.

Ahhhhhh...this is a tragic event, nothing more nothing less, we don't need new laws to stop this from happening again, the fact is it will happen again, just like today someone will be killed by a drunk driver, someone else will be murdered.

Even the Waltz?

Yes, even the waltz.  I can think of at least a half dozen Christian religions that think of dancing as being a tool of the devil.

A bit of waltz history:  At the time that the waltz was introduced the "proper" dances of the day were dances such as the minuette, etc. where if partners touched at all it was only at the fingertips and the parners would dance around each other.  The waltz, when introduced, was considered scandelous and an abomination. Not only did the couples dance in an "embrace", but the men dared to actually step (gasp) BETWEEN THE WOMAN'S FEET!!!

And in order to not hijack the thread any further...The shooting will certainly start another round of anti-handgun discussion and further fuel the anti-gun legislation that many people hope for.  Unfortunately, more legislation is not what is needed.  Remember a few years ago when there were a number of churches that were firebombed and more than one person was killed?  No gun was used.  I don't think there really is any kind of "answer" to the problem. It is just one of the facts of life.  Banning guns will not stop the problem, and you can't do much about stopping the person or people responsable for the acts until after the fact.

Soooooooo, I guess stripper poles in baptist church basements is pretty much, out of the question.

igor2003 -> RE: Breaking news, shooter in Maryville, Ill. Church (3/9/2009 9:30:28 AM)

You might have to find a church that is a little more progressive than the Babtists to come up with a stripper pole in the basement.  I do know that there are religions that actually push back the pughs and hold dances in their church so that their people won't go out and mix with the general public to dance.  Not quite stripper pole stuff, but the do dance the waltz!

It's a sad state of affairs when people are happy that this happened because he was a minister.  Who was he hurting?

I saw something similar on Buck Rodgers in the 25th century but they used these orb things to maintain the dignity of human separation.

Are you joking? Good lord, what could such a law possibly say?

I could have sworn shooting priests was already against the law.

housesub4you -> RE: Breaking news, shooter in Maryville, Ill. Church (3/9/2009 10:43:32 AM)

Yup I saw the news last night with idiots saying we need new laws to stop this kind of thing from happening.

It happens every time some tragic event happens, be it a brain dead women, school shootings, church shootings,...etc

I'm just glad it is not an election year or there would be all this and more from people hard up for votes
