corysub -> Illegal Aliens may get "stimulus jobs" (3/9/2009 5:18:56 PM)

As more and more Americans lost their jobs during this deepening recession, hopes turned to Washington for help...and, once again, it was politics as usual.  Apparently, the Recovery Act of 2009 does not have a requirement for checking citizenship for workers taking jobs.  Since many illegals work in construction, the potential is that as many as 300,000 jobs will not be given citizens.
Instead of rushing to pass the largest spending Bill in history, our representatives should have read the legislation, and the President too!

And this surprises you, why?

I received several emails from NumbersUSA about that very topic. I'm sure the fax machines and switchboards on the Hill were melting from the 90,000+ communiques received in protest.

So it's all speculation at this stage then: it's a lot of fear tactic. From your article:

"Studies by two conservative think tanks estimate immigrants in the United States illegally could take 300,000 construction jobs, or 15% of the 2 million jobs that new taxpayer-financed projects are predicted to create."

You still have the hope that legitimate workers will apply for these jobs - and get them :-) .

thornhappy -> RE: Illegal Aliens may get "stimulus jobs" (3/9/2009 5:57:53 PM)

All jobs need to have I-9 IDs...you mean they're waving the I-9 requirements?

Lynnxz -> RE: Illegal Aliens may get "stimulus jobs" (3/9/2009 6:10:02 PM)

Well, then I suppose that citizens will have to go actually apply for the jobs, and be the best choice over the illegal immigrant.

Hrm.

Nope...not a surprise at all.  Everyday reading and learning about this "Stimulus Package" is like opening a new door...you never know what you going to find on the other side.

That isn't why illegals get hired. They get hired because they are cheaper.

But the one thing that we can be as sure of as death and taxes is that whatever is behind that door, you won't like it and will paint it in the most negative light possible, whether it has any basis in fact or not. It's good to have something to depend upon.

Damn those illegal aliens anyway. How dare they come and steal our jobs. They should wait in their own country till the corporate CEOs can transport our jobs over to them, pay them a dollar a day for a twelve hour work day, give them no benefits, encourage child labor and the like. That's the American way!

He has a point. Money meant to put Citizens to work should not put illegal immigrants to work. Just my two cents.

What's outrageous is that there is this "e-verify" system in place, but employers are not required to use it -- for "stimulus jobs," or any other jobs.  Which just goes to show that in spite of all the fearmongering, the people-in-power WANT illegal aliens here, and WANT employers to hire them.

So they instituted this "REAL ID Act," and a thousand other measures that put every American in a database, under the guise of controlling illegal immigration, for NOTHING.  I won't support any measure to control illegal immigration, because I know it's all BS, just like the fake "war on drugs" -- and we're selling our ourselves, and our own liberties, for nothing.

Seems a bit extreme...

C and I were somewhere when someone made a comment about "lazy mexicans" He looked at me and said... "Wait, isn't that an oxymoron?" The fact is, he's had much better success hiring immigrants, illegal or not. He pays them the same rate he would anyone else.

Just my pov.

If you take out the melodramatics, the substance of your post sounds about right to me. With unemployment in this country heading fast toward the 10% level, I say get every one of them out of here and let them fend for themselves in Mexico or wherever they came from. I don't want one goddamned dime of my tax money being used to pay  the wages of illegal aliens when there are over 12 million legal American citizens out of work right now. Tackle the immigratiion problem somewhere down the road, but right now - today - every penny of that atrocious stimulus bill that is tasked to job creation should be used to to help American taxpayers find work to support their families.

I'd agree from those I know and have known it is pretty close to being an oxymoron. I grew up working crops in fields. I don't know what's to blame but people changed somewhere along the path. When I was a kid, laziness wasn't an option. Even the drunk you hired off the street corner to come help cut tobacco or put up hay worked his ass off. His ass usually stunk to high heaven and he sweated a river or two that smelled like a distillery, but he'd work. I left it for a couple of tours in the military, came back and worked my father-in-law's farm with him for a few years. Finding anyone who would do that kind of back-breaking, daybreak to dusk work became more than difficult. We started hiring hispanics and ya know, the people were good, the work went by fast, you could depend on them to be there the next morning. Everyone parted on good terms.

This is about more than Mexicans though. A few weeks ago, can't remember which institution, but a recipient of bail-out money turned out to have a hiring freeze on US workers. Seems they came out a lot cheaper off-shoring the work but didn't mind using taxpayer dollars to stay afloat. I don't care how you look at it, it is a slap in the face to the people who are paying for it, and it is not one that's going to float. This particular boat has holes all in it and is not going to be defensible. The one-liner crowd out there will try, but being snide is not going to make this right.

It is our money. It is our future. We have a right, if not a duty, in determining how it's used. How it should not be used is paying folks who are breaking law to begin with. This is one of those issues that will generate another one of the vigilante things where folks ride around watching stimulus funded projects and call in law enforcement when they see immigrants doing the work.

It will happen if someone doesn't take a stance to ensure money we're supposedly spending to help the US economy is viewed as being shipped out of the country. Why that's difficult to understand, I don't know.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Illegal Aliens may get "stimulus jobs" (3/9/2009 9:55:48 PM)

~FR~

If they work more, and willing to do so for less, then they are more attractive to employers.

As far as hard working, I agree. My neighbors have two groups that work different construction, one does cabinets and kitchens, the other does regular framing. Of all the people in this neighborhood that seem to work a labor job, they are the first out in the morning and the last to return. That tells me they are working longer hours. They also are gone working everyday, while some around here have become unemployed because of work slow down.

I used to clean sewers for $4.85 an hour, I have dug ditches for $7.00 an hour. When there are less jobs you have to be willing to work for less and do more.

As far as Illegal Aliens getting those jobs, I want to see some sweeping reform, and control on the border. Whether it is from jobs from the Stim package or not, with increasing unemployment we need to slow down immigration.

I do wonder at a few posters not saying anything, when several months ago those same posters were blasting "big business" for wanting and using cheap labor.
