I met my Dom through mutual friends. Granted it was an open minded group of people. . but at first I thought He was TOTALLY vanilla because I misunderstood something He said. We almost missed a great opportunity for it. So put yourself out there and try things out.
For me I learned different aspects of the scene by being comfortable enough to suggest things and try different things with different people. It took years to figure out exactly what I really wanted and how I really fit into all of this. But the journey was so worth it!
As other said - get out there and meet people and experience where you can. Because different subs want different things and I don't think there's a standard on this at all. Except for the basics of being open, understanding, patient and respectful.
