Nice theory but I disagree, mainly due to the fact from my own experience I've found that BDSM is not a culture, but is in fact cross-cultural and is merely an element or component part of someone's own individual culture. That's what makes it cross-cultural.

I could write more, but I've spent so much of my life living and thinking outside of the box, I'm not entirely convinced that I would recognize a box if I saw one, nor do I feel the feel to generalize when it comes to human behaviour and sexuality so that I can explain to myself who I am and what I do in relations to others through neat little categories in neat little boxes.

Some things just don't need explanation or justification. They just are.

manor towards other members of society

the street.

Ummm... What does it matter???

People do what people do and that should be that.

Or should I start saving for my BDSM education tuition??

BDSM, or whatever the intellectuals want to call it these days has always been a "sub-culture" challenging the morality and expectations of the "norm". That was until D&S started getting involved. Quarter of a century ago one would be hard pressed to even be invited within the "sub-culture" and less impressed that most invovled within the "sub-culture" were very heavily into animal play.
These days, most who seem to have made this so called "sub-culture" their little home, seem horrified at the prospect of transforming an individual into an animal. let alone have even heard of it, even though this aspect of the "sub-culture" was around long before they were, myself included. To say BDSM is a culture may be a little misleading considering the apparent "forgetfulness" of those who have failed to remember how they got here in the first place and how the door was opened for them. Don't worry, I've heard it all before......."This lifestyle is for everyone!!!!!!!". When in reality we all know perfectly well it isn't.

You have your culture, sub-cultures or whatever you think you might want to call it next week, but i'll stick with my "lifestyle".

My only questuion to the OP is where does he draw the line between Liofestyle and Culture. I'd say that this is a personal thing especially where the line of divide is blured.
