I responded to the thread. The discussion went from Gor to Godlike insects vs. guy nailed to a tree, so I threw in a Douglas Adams line.

As far as being the worst writing (John Norman's work) I can think of dozens of writers who are far worse than he is. I used to own many of his books when I was in 8th grade. His writing was intended to fill a niche; swords and sorcery / fantasy, written at about the high school level which is the average level of reading and comprehension in the United States and Europe.

It is like Romance novels. They were written for a certain population. I think in John Norman's case the population he thought he was writing for was not (in general) the one he ended up with...

I read far better fantasy stuff, IMO, that was around the same type of niche that far excelled whatever he produced for that series.

Then again I was always reading things far above my age level - something to do with being addicted to text. lol
