1) Does anyone have any experience in buying, selecting, and using a bondage helmet/hood? What should one look for? How important is it to buy a custom size, or can one make due with a one-size-fits-all model?

2) What about materials: rubber, latex, or leather. What are the pros and cons??

3) If you have such a helmet please describe it. What is your experience like when wearing it?

Thanks for the input.

1) Look for a design with features that you like. Whether or not someone can make due with an off-the-shelf hood depends on the size/shape of their head and how it aligns with the features of the hood. There's no easy way to determine this without trying them on. Custom is always nice if you can afford it.

2) Latex/rubber is more prone to tearing but it's easier to clean than leather and it's more likely to pull on your hair. Aside from that, it's a preference issue.

3) I don't own either, but I've worn both leather and rubber hoods. The leather one was much more severe, but I count that as a plus. YMMV.

Your best bet is to try all the ones you can get your hands on and if nothing "feels" right, save your pennies and go custom.

www.leatherpost.com

best place i would go for any thing like that, they got a huge salection of hoods

Leatherpost has a lot of generic latex hoods, but their selection of leather and heavy gauge rubber is awfully limited. I'd suggest Mr. S for leather and Rubber's Finest or Studio Gum for rubber.

Interesting recommendations. I just feel bewildered by the choices. I'm hoping a local place may have some things I can put my hands on.

Hey, you of all people some have some helpful, insightful advice here. So, c'mon, what do you have to say about latex helmets? (Fit, style, effect, etc.)

PureFetish -> RE: Bondage Helmets / Hoods (1/26/2006 3:35:39 PM)

My first latex mask was perfect. It zipped up the back and was thin latex with a nose so it didn't hurt at all. I recently bought a mask with no mouth from www.twistmyrubberarm.com; it was advertised as fitted mash but it only had ear shapes and no nose to speak off. The result was a painful nose, so I cut a hole for my nose but it was still too tight and hurt my mouth. It is now an open face hood. Mind you, I've now worn it several times and it has not torn dispite my crude cutting. I do like their stuff and have socks and panties from them.

Haven't used a metal helmet in decades. I've seen the stainless; they don't do anything for Me.

Leather: I used to use one I liked that laced in back, had a removable mouth cover, removable eye pieces. But but I usually prefer a sub blindfolded anyway so didn't remove the eyepieces much.

I usually love the smell and feel of leather, however, I have to say it's with the exception of hoods. I don't much care for the smell of hide on a sub's face, or his head for that matter. I also don't like the smell of sweaty leather if a sub is straining to keep control during a severe corporal session with either whips or paddles. As a result I've gotten away from using leather hoods almost entirely. Mine stays softened and cleaned ready for use, and never gets out of the closet these days.

Latex is fine and has it's purposes, too. Like leather, it gets hot and sweaty. Rubber is too inconvenient and not tactile enough for My taste.

I tend to use a lightweight, comfortable, fairly sheer, delightfully tactile lycra hood with a built in blindfold. My sub can breathe easily right through it, it doesn't sweat, and he can feel the warmth of my touch, lips, or, er, umm, other sensations through it. Washes easily and let's Me enjoy the scent of his aftershave, too.

Today, I'd vote Lycra. Tomorrow, who knows. My preferences are subject to change without notice.

That is a pretty insightful reply and I appreciate it. I can tell hoods are not too popular, b/c if you do a collarme search, very little comes up. This thread has also garnered a pretty small response and the local shop in town barely carries anything in its stock.

The purpose in my project, I suppose would be to achieve a kind of bondage, sexy, objectification theme. I'm not sure how it will go, and I share some of your distaste for hoods as well. I hadn't thought of the sweat factor, and that might actually be significant.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards tight rubber --- and its become a matter of design and look.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

My best advices is try one of everything you can. Do you have play friends that you can try out theirs before you buy your own? I have 2 leather and 4 latex hoods. Each one is different with a fit and features of its own. ebay is a great place to look for bondage hoods, leather hoods and latex hoods.

Tonya Winter's fetishwear site at www.fetishwear.net has a wonderful Darlex (like Spandex, but rubber reinforced) Gwen Hood, which is astonishingly snug.

No one, apart from QuietDragon, has mentioned the qualities of Darlex, and the wonderful seamstress abilities of Tonya Winters at www.fetishwear.net.

I have bought three hoods of different design (eyes, nostril and mouth holes; nostril and mouth holes, and nostril holes only) and can verify to their various effects. The hoods tend to be sized on the small side, so only get small if you want a REALLY tight fit or have a truly small head. :)

Tonya also offers several other articles in the same material. I have a sleepsack, a wonderful item that will be coming with me soon when I move to live in America. In fact, my entire Darlex family will be emigrating with me!

Evanesce -> RE: Bondage Helmets / Hoods (2/23/2006 11:19:57 AM)

We've got a half dozen leather hoods, a handful of nylon/spandex masks, and one large, round steel helmet (with matching mitts). Each of these creates its own unique experience. I prefer the look and feel of leather, but only if the fit is right. My personal favorite is one that has no openings except for two small nostril holes; followed closely by one that has holes for eyes, mouth and nose, but also has an outer shell that zips closed in front, leaving one in total darkness. That one has a tendency to induce slight panic, because it gets really hot in there, VERY quickly!

The steel helmet is an entirely different experience. It doesn't shut out all the light, but every sound is amplified, and listening to the echo of one's own breathing lends a rather surreal quality to the experience. Bad thing about this helmet, though, is its weight, which requires it to be suspended or supported by something other than the wearer's own neck.

We don't have any latex hoods or helmets. I think this is simply because we've not gotten around to buying any. However, Cocoon has some very interesting helmets, along with a bondage ball I'd like to have. (look under "inflatables")
