TheHeretic -> These images are graphic and disturbing (3/18/2009 9:45:56 PM)

     A rant:

So I was responding to someone on a thread about politics the other day, and I used the analogy of a chicken with it's head cut off.  If you want to describe frantic and pointless activity, that's a pretty good analogy.  At least, it is a good analogy if the person you are talking to has a clue what you are talking about.  Everyone has heard the expression I imagine, but in these modern days, I wonder how many people actually understand what is being described.

On a whim, I thought it would be fun to link the phrase to some video of precisely what I was comparing the President's activities to, just in case the person I was responding to was a life-long city boy who thinks meat comes from styrofoam, and that onions grow on trees.  That turned out to be more of a project than I thought, and I just ok'd the post.

Well, I kept up my search for a bit anyway.  Pretty slim pickings.  I found a blog where someone had posted just the video I wanted, only to discover the video had been pulled, but the thread still running, attacking the OP on just about every grounds imaginable, without ever addressing his question (sorta like some of the threads up in General BDSM [8|]).  He was a "sick, disgusting bastard," he needed to be arrested or locked away in a mental institution.  Others were using the thread to proclaim their own virtues, and how they would never find amusement in the death of a living creature, that they would never be so cruel and heartless as to laugh at something so tragic.

There was one easy Google hit, to some badly shot video of a "native ritual," with the tourists all gasping and muttering, but for the simple, everyday act of turning livestock into dinner, I had found squat, before walking away in disgust at what a nation of ignorant, knee-jerk, bleeding hearts, I live in.

What is the point of having a classic metaphor, if people aren't allowed to understand it?

It doesn't seem to me to require either direct experience, or a video in lieu of same, in order to comprehend the phrase as a metaphor for frenzied unreasoning activity.

Edited to add:
If you ever find a video to help people understand, graphically, what "full of shit" means, I probably won't need to see that one either.

What would make you think that there wouldn't be people offended by this?  People can be offended by pretty much everything
for a host of reasons you may not understand.
It doesn't make them ignorant just different from you. Perhaps had you looked a little harder you still could have found exactly what you were looking for and while I wouldn't be thrilled at watching this type of video I do understand your wanting to make a "graphic" point.

sounds like you were running around like a chicken with its' head cut off, looking for a video of a chicken with its' head cut off.

*lol*

Doesn't there need to be a point of reference beyond the imagination, Kirata?  What if the person you are speaking with lives his life in blissful ignorance of reality, and just believes everything that springs to their mind?

Say, for example, I wanted to describe being in a situation where you are fighting for control, and I use the example of a steering tire blowout on the freeway.  Someone who has had that happen will get it.  They will know the adrenaline that kicks in, the need to feel every change and respond immediately, the importance of avoiding a panic reaction like stomping the brake.  Now consider how else that could be interpreted.  Someone who doesn't drive could be picturing an automatic death sentence, for the driver and passengers.  On the other end, some jackass who thinks he can drive because he likes to weave in traffic, but has never been in a genuine emergency, will completely miss the gravity of the situation.  Both are likely to be completely unaware of their ignorance, and convinced of their view being accurate.

I've seen the chicken go tearing around between the coop and the table.  Imagination doesn't do it justice.

Everything is going to offend somebody, Scarlet.  I just don't think anyone but a vegetarian should be able to hide their willfull ignorance of where mear comes from behind a spewing of vitriol towards simple reality.

TH.. chances are that people who are chopping the heads off chickens so that they can have supper are not likely to be thinking about taping it for youtube..theyre going to be thinking about supper....

(although I have personally seen a headless chicken in action.. and got suckered into holding its still-warm liver...ERK!!!)

So free-range-rubber-boneless-chickens won't do?

You have to have the hard-core-streaking-poultry-decapitation-snuff films.

Depends. But no matter how good the metaphor-slash-analogy you choose may be from the point of view of an experienced driver, or an experienced pilot, or sailor, or whatever, if your object is communication, and you employ a metaphor that the other person can't grok, the problem isn't their ignorance. The problem is your choice of metaphor or analogy.

Addressing your complaint (and the topic title) more directly, a beheaded chicken, scrabbling around squirting blood out its neck, is not wholly germane to understanding the meaning of the metaphor. It can be explained quite adequately without recourse to a graphic depiction of its irrelevant aspects.

agrees 100% with kirata

TheHeretic -> RE: These images are graphic and disturbing (3/19/2009 6:58:47 AM)

I don't think the squirting blood is an irrelevant aspect, Kirata.  It seems pretty symbolic to me, of the money being wasted.

I also disagree about pandering to ignorance.  Why not encourage folks to expand their knowledge?  My preferred analogy of bureaucratic process is muskeg.  I'm well aware that plenty of people have no idea what that is, so I provide a link to help them get the idea.  Following your advice seems like a surrender to the dumbing down of the population.

DesFIP -> RE: These images are graphic and disturbing (3/19/2009 8:25:05 AM)

I quit eating chicken for a couple of months after seeing one killed in this manner for dinner. Very young, on a cousin's farm. She was a terrible cook anyway so I wasn't missing much.

I was thinking about a chicken coop for eggs but the truth is I don't want to butcher it. Same in raising a steer, I need to find someone around who will butcher it. I don't hunt for venison on my land because I don't want to field dress it. I'd rather let others hunt and give me a gift of chops.

LaTigresse -> RE: These images are graphic and disturbing (3/19/2009 8:27:07 AM)

Send them to the farm. I will give them a first hand demo AND cook them dinner.[:D]

Vendaval -> RE: These images are graphic and disturbing (3/19/2009 8:29:10 AM)

One of my brothers had the butcher come over to kill the hogs.  Everyone left for the day but was back to eat the pork that night.  The rabbits he killed himself and his wife cooked them for family dinners.  Their offspring squirmed a bit at first and then adjusted to the situation.
