aravain -> Thoughts from (and about) Spring Break (3/22/2009 4:56:41 PM)

Hi all :D I have returned from my spring break (where did I go? Why, to my parents' house where I proceeded to have a different doctor's appointment for three days in a row, thanks for asking), and, by nature of being bored for many, many hours, I got to thinking during spring break *about* spring break, and the nature of 'breaks' in general. Before I blather on, though, I have a couple major questions that I actually want to hear from other people about.

What do you do on 'short' breaks from work/school/whatever (anywhere from 4 to 10 days)? What about longer breaks, like vacations?

I've found that, for me, these breaks are highly unrelaxing, if a little productive. For shorter breaks, that's my time to 'do everything' that I can't normally do, things like doctors' appointments during the day, getting my own medications (for a change), some chores for my parents, that sort of thing. It's not relaxing, it's mostly just work, different work than I'm used to. A change isn't necessarily bad... it keeps things interesting, but it makes the name for such times (break) very deceiving.

Then there's vacations... I *hate* vacations. Opposed to breaks, they're chock full of... nothing. For me, nothing is not that relaxing. Then again, neither are traditional 'vacation activities' like travelling and doing touristy things, or visiting family (quite the opposite, visiting family is *very* stressful). I've done a lot of travelling compared to most thanks to a lot of opportunities I had when I was younger, and by far the parts I hated the most were the parts the groups I went with loved the most... the tourist crap. I'd much rather travel to a different country, and just walk around a city or town than 'see the sights' as others seem to be used to. Having an itinerary is one of the most stressful things you can do for me!

So THAT got me to thinking.

What would be the perfect vacation?

Thinking about it... I honestly think it would be a trip like the one I took to New Zealand as a staff member for a group... there were some out-of-the-ordinary activities (concerts and things), but on the whole it was a very open-ended trip where, as a staff member, I could do pretty much whatever I wanted to most of the time. Something like that would be the best for me. I mean, yeah, I'll probably do a little touristy stuff, but most of it... I don't care for!

So what are your answers?

I've never had time off of work that was longer than 4 days.

During those times I've caught up on chores, had appts to keep that I couldn't make before because of work, I spent time with my child, relaxed and tried to take care of my health a little better or I've had to take trips to visit my family or others for different reasons...rarely for pleasureable reasons.

Someday I hope to be able to take those spring breaks and vacations that everyone talks about but probably won't be until I retire many many years from now.

I don't think I've ever actually had a spring break? C and I were trying to figure out when it was the other day.

On the other hand, we both have sporadic, self-owned businesses. Taking a few days off on a slow week is no problem for either of us, so we have a habit of disappearing some times.

We've saved up for a trip to Vegas next month to go see one of our favorite bands play, as well as go to Viva Las Vegas, a huge car and rockabilly show- I'm excited... I've never been before.

Aravain, I completely agree with you about the tourist trap locations. They are crowded, stressful, and full of mothers trying to plan out every second of the trip. :P

I'll just say that now is definitely the time to fly.... I recently returned from a week in DC/Virginia/Penn , and it cost me 240-bucks to fly round trip into Baltimore from Portland, Oregon. By far the cheapest I've seen in a while....

On Spring Break we sometimes stay home.  Sometimes travel.  It just depends on our mood and finances.  We enjoy our time together, whether on the porch or in Vegas.

Then again, I do get May 1 to Sept 1 off most years ;)   Tough gig, but *someone* has to do it!

My oldest had thought of going to Myrtle Beach with friends over spring break, four college girls in one tiny room. Instead she came home sick as a dog and stayed in bed for three days straight.

I hated being set loose in a strange city when I was high school/college age. I always wanted to start out with a guide book and a hundred dollars in local currency. But I would happily go to museums and wander around all day. Part of it may be that I am 'directionally challenged', in other words I can get lost in a closet. So not being able to find my way around never made things less stressful.

We have a bit of the town vrs gown mentality here.  When the university lets out and the students leave the locals breathe a sigh of relief for that week or two.  There is less chaos and mayhem in frat row and downtown has far fewer belligerant drunks.

Where ever the "Spring break" crowd goes, let me go the other way.  lol.

Drunken kids, full of bravado, studipity, and folly is not my idea of a good time.

Spring break.....lots of fine memories from those days.  I was always too poor for international travel.  But I did love taking road trips.  My buddies and I would just pile into a car and live off of convenient store chow and beer.
