There are stocks that are doing well in the recession, 4 of those are Apple, Starbucks, Netflicks and Amazon.

"The Recession's Early Winners"

March 23, 2009

"The market's having a dramatic rethink. Shares in cellular companies have jumped about 40%, on average, from their November lows. During that time the rest of the market has gone nowhere. Sprint's doubled from its distressed levels. Apple, Black Berry's Research in Motion, even Palm have risen a long way.

(break)

The market's rethinking this one, too. Starbucks stock has now jumped 55% from the lows. Sure, sales and profits are well down. But management is fighting back with cost savings and new initiatives. More than 750,000 people have signed up for Starbucks loyalty cards, triple what the company expected. (And that's a wireless play too: They give you some free WiFi with your beverage.) The coffee shop has become an important part of many people's day. Shares in rival coffee chain Peet's are up about 10% too.

(break)

Amazon stock, which tanked initially, has doubled since November. Hype over the Kindle electronic book reader has helped. Online jeweler Blue Nile has also bounced. And look at Netflix– its stock just hit a record high, surging over $40 for the first time."

Anyone that wants to buy stocks...should purchase stocks related to children (Gerber/baby products/strollers/car seats/binkies/etc.).

What the hell do you think people are doing if they can't afford to go to dinner and a movie?

They're fucking.

A lot.

Look for a baby boom between now and 2011.

Or fighting.  Do you have photographic evidence either way?

Velvety

She called me over that mountain top
I was a poor soul lost in the shady trees
I was going to die, i was going to freeze
Then she touched me
She was velvety

She's a cat of a creature
She don't care she's velvety
She made the strangest sounds

She was an island girl of the ancient line
When the whole damn thing was sinkin' to the brine
Her true love from her was torn
She packed it up to california
Then she met me
She's velvety

The fact that Starbucks is still in business is proof that The Epic Recession Of Doom (tm) is not nearly as bad as the political Kermit-flailing would suggest.

From the FedEx website - "In fiscal year 1983 Federal Express reported $1 billion in revenues, making American business history as the first company to reach that financial hallmark inside ten years of start-up without mergers or acquisitions."

Yeah, but they did have Carter-era inflation, that's cheating!

I'm not going to invest in electric cars, because in order for them to really take off we'd need a lot of new electric infrastructure, and I don't see that happening in the next 10 years.

It's not really the infrastructure, it's the energy storage. Inadequate battery tech was why we chose gasoline over electric back in the 1910s, and the situation still hasn't changed. If anybody solves that problem (possibly via fuel cell tech) they WILL be the Next Big Thing.

Hey, I heard that CM has this neat new feature now, where if you're only talking to one person, you can like, send a message to *just them*. How cool is that?!?

Just a quick assessment :

The forty-percent pop in cellular companies is directly related to some monster, under-the-radar, merger/acquisition activity, complete within the framework of local providers being bought up by the likes of AT&T, Verizon, etc...

Where I am here in Oregon, we went from a choice of six local providers down to three. AT&T acquired two of them, and another, US Cellular, acquired the other.

Coincidentally, after signing on with AT&T, my rate plan has jumped about twenty percent in cost.

quote:

The market's rethinking this one, too. Starbucks stock has now jumped 55% from the lows
.

Starbucks, on the other hand, was flirting with near historic lows over the last nine months...And its my belief that with some recent positive talk from the administration--related to markets--, and some of this new stimulus money dedicated to some fairly large infrastructure projects, the trickle-down effect will prop up a "creature comfort'' icon like Starbucks before nearly anything else.

If I were personally investing in the market : I would heavily research some of the upstart Bio-medical/nano-technology stocks directly related to innovations within the stem cell framework.

Some very big things that are commercially applicable related to stem cell research are on the horizon. I think we'll see a ''cure'' for male-pattern baldness in the not to distant future--- that is directly related to this type of research.

And some will both balk and laugh at this, but its highly likely that within five to eight years, we'll see a '' Nano bubble '' constructed that may bring about a nice rise in the standard of living for a certain bloc of the population.

Of course new gains in the frontier of solar and other types of alternative energy will continue to reap rewards for those who've set their sights.

Even in a recession certain goods and services will always be in demand.
Coffee, movies, lipstick, jewelry, electronic communications devices, sex, etc.
People need escapism and distractions when reality bites the big one.

Starbucks is ,despite their recent setbacks ,viewed by investors as a smartly run co.They have responded wisely to their recent difficulties in both a smart and timely manner. Both through contraction and a return to their root business model they have demonstrated that they are well positioned to overcome their issues.
