If you have a day or so to spare, consider a quick trip to Paris. If you take the Thalys it's only a few hours from Amsterdam. Lots of good things to eat, and if you're feeling sadistic, take the metro during rush hour. You can push people out of the way without retribution There's also the Sex Museum, which apparently has a decent collection of devices.

Not the same as hearing the language on a regular basis, but a decent starting point where you can begin to make inferences and pick out words to start to get a general understanding.

We had a couple of great talks, but it looks like the cheapest he can get me into an ocean-view single is $2300 plus airfare, and I'd only save about $300 with an interior cabin. Add gratuities, a couple nights in Rotterdam and/or Copenhagen, and it's right around 5K. Not a backbreaker, but a little more than I was hoping for. If this were the only big vacation I was planning this year, I'd be fine with that, but I really had my heart set on a good, long exploration of Germany and Austria later in the summer. I'm going to have to do some thinking over the next couple of days about how much of that later trip I'm comfortable trimming in order to take this one. The problem is, I've not yet thoroughly planned and priced the later trip, because it's far enough out that I haven't felt the need yet. Too busy with other things. This will be the impetus I need to get off my ass and do some intensive research into that later trip, so I have a better idea of what my travel budget is for the rest of the year. That's going to take a few days, and I'll probably be calling Brandon back on Monday, or Tuesday at the latest. One option might be to live large on the cruise, and balance it out by doing the hostel and rail thing for at least part of my longer trip, which really has a lot of appeal in its own right as well. I bought a couple of German travel magazines yesterday, and I'm scurrying down to Barnes and Noble this afternoon to get a Fodor's guide and a couple of other guidebooks, and start hitting the books. Thanks again for the heads-up on this; the more I look at it, the more it really sounds like a hell of a lot of fun! I've just got some research to do before I feel comfortable making the decision.

We don't have a firm date/time set, but we will be hoping to host a night at a pub one night in London. At this point, all we know is that it will NOT be on Saturday night, June 13th; we've got tickets to see Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre.

I had very good luck with the Rosetta Stone French program, and I actually still remember most of it, though I haven't used it in 5 years (compared with 2 years of French in school, of which I remembered NONE!). It isn't the best method -- which is -still- being 'in-country' and compulsory immersion -- but it is one of the better options if you don't have that available. Dame Calla

Does anyone know what happened to Darcyandthedark? They have been so helpful to us regarding the London portion of the trip. We were trying to find out if they've set up a day, time and location for us getting together with them and other CM friends and when we clicked on their profile today - it's gone and we never got their direct email addresses. We'll have our laptop and hope to have internet access, but just in case wanted to publish something here about our little gathering. Please contact us on the other side if you can provide any insight. THANKS!
