I eat meat.  No plans to change.

HFCS, white, refined, processed, salt, MSG, aspartane.      Lets get real over what destroys health.   If I could pin 1 item on bad health- it would be HFCS.


...and yet- I dont eat alot of sausage, hot dogs,  any idea what is in that stuff?

I dont think meat is harmful.  I just dont.  I do think lack of vegatables and fruit to balance the meat IS a HUGE problem. a bag of potato chips is not a serving of vegatables!!!.

Pork is considered red meat. Easy folks...pork and beef have the greatest amount of animal fat and non-meat 'contamination,' i.e., much harder to digest and process.

I suggest chicken and fish ONLY (turkey ONLY off the bird) for 'meat'...while maybe a filet once a week. I have a close relative that eats filet mignon on every saturday ONLY at home.

mr rodgers is right
that old "pork: the other white meat" campaign was full of a lot of disinformation. pork IS a red meat, just because it looks white when you cook it doesnt meant anything. your body still processes it (or tries to) like a red meat.

physiologically we don't require meat. physiologically speaking, we'd be better off without it. i think the issue of intestinal cancer is due to the fact that our intestinal tract is so long, vs. say, that of a wolf or lion, or other TRUE meat eater. the meat continues to decompose while sitting in your intestine, releasing toxins that COULD contribute to colon cancer. there is no nation with a high rate of meat consumption and a LOW rate of colon cancer. =p there could be a correlation there. (we'll see if such a thing ever gets funded for serious study, though, considering what a hold Ag. has on people in government.)
another contributor, of course, are nitrosamines, found in highest concentrations in, you guessed it, pork and beef.

meat production contaminates more water than even oil. and here's hoping that all the new animal care standards that are being adopted (primarily thanks to California) will send meat prices skyrocketing so that people can see what it really will cost if you don't treat the animals like suitcases. the idea of "civilized" people sending animals down dismemberment lines while they're still conscious is ridiculous.
i'm a veg now, but i was a class A meat eater. our family considered it "light" to only have one meat course. i'd eat hamburger patties with no salt, no mustard, nothing. just the meat. =p now, the smell of cooking meat makes me feel sick. it smells like something spoiled and rotting, which is, of course, what it is. the only way to stop (well, not "stop" but perhaps "slow down") decomposition of something dead is to embalm it, and meat isn't embalmed.
my issue, primarily, is that slaughter processes/practices are absolutely inane. we treat animals worse than pedophiles and murderers, just because we think that ANY human is better than any animal. i think, though, in the huge scope of things, if the planet COULD choose a life form to get rid of, it wouldn't be any animal but us.

Rainy, just out of curiousity, how many beef and hogs have you physically been present at the slaughter?

I've seen plenty and not one was anywhere close to being alive when the disembowelment process began. And since the carcass of beef is usually hung for a period of time prior to dismemberment, certainly not alive when that begins.

Granted, I've only been in two large scale processing facilities, but I have assisted in the butcher of various meat animals. Not to mention, I see those animals being raised all around me.

The cattle get to wander around rolling pastures, eating as much grass as they wish, hanging out with their friends, until they reach the end of their time. They are loaded into a trailer, taken to the butcher where they receive a bullet to the head. Immediately hoisted and bled out, then skinned and gutted.

Personally, aside from not being able to actually CHOOSE when we die, we have to suffer old age and disease because a humane killing is judged wrong for us, much of the end process isn't that different than our embalming process, aside from our use of the meat carcass rather than trying to preserve it for the ages, and wasting land burying it. Not to mention the chemicals we use in preservation.

Now, I don't bring this up to argue the moral case individuals have against eating meat. What I do get mildly annoyed at is the propoganda, usually by PETA, that all red animals are treated so horribly. The photos and video they use quite simply is not consistant throughout the entire industry. Yes, some of that may exist. Just as puppy mills exist, dog fighting, etc. Just because there are puppy mills does not make every breeder evil. Just because there are fighting dogs, does not make every dog of that breed a fighting dog or owner of that breed someone that wants to fight their dog.

If people don't want to support a method of raising beef or pork, or a method of processing their meat, they need to do their homework and find out where and how their meat is brought to them.

They are of course welcome to avoid meat altogether. Yet do so for reasons other than using blanket statements of abuse as a reason. Health reasons I can support, "it makes me wanna puke" I can support, "I am too lazy to do the investigation" I can support....but not that "ALL meat animals are treated terribly".

I love animals and I despise the mistreatment of animals. I find no fault with the way the farmers treat the beef and pork I eat, at all.

I think I read somewhere that everything is good for you in moderation. I simply believe that moderations vary. Don't let the latest promotional propaganda effect you to much.

Remember the human body is that of hunter gatherer. Though large animal meat, like beef or similar would likely not have been an everyday treat.

Beef is not bad, gorging yourself with it might be though. We all see the Angus breed of beef advertised, yes it has good marbling, but it is also a smaller animal and therefore it's portion sizes can be sized accordingly. The Charolais (a fuckin' French breed, no offense kitten) for instance is the large whitish, cream colored cattle you see in pastures across the land and they have larger sized loins and roasts. Hense not as practicle for the modern consumer, they are therefore cross bred to improve their viability.

Eat and drink wisely, excersize (sex is a great calorie burner), plan for tomorrow and live each day as if it was your last.

I suspect one day I will die, but it won't be due to starvation.
