With gold prices topping $900 an ounce and jobs still disappearing, a new gold rush is on.

It's taking place in California again, where unemployed people are heading for the hills to prospect for gold. It's also happening on TV and online, where sometimes dubious ads promise rich rewards if you'll just hock your jewelry. And it's even creeping into a new kind of cocktail party that could only start in the Golden State.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090326/sc_livescience/newgoldrushpartylikeits1849

I have to admit; I used to watch this show about hobby gold prospecting, and it fascinated me.  The idea of striking it rich in one lucky haul is just a universal draw I suppose.

Now we don't have gold prospecting in this state, but we do have the world's only public diamond mine where you can keep what you find:

I've never actually went, and it's only an hour away from me.  But I do know people that do it every weekend, and there are people that do it everyday.  Every once in awhile, someone finds a huge diamond.  Along with gold prospecting, it's a tempting passtime.

The story reminds me of the late 70's and my exhusband talking me into going to Wyoming so he could work in the coal mines.

What a really BAD idea that was...

I had a history teacher in high school that would go gold prospecting with his wife out in the Sierra Nevadas every summer.  It was their fun adventure to share together.

And some of the local rock hounds here head out to Arkansas looking for various mineral deposits and caves for exploring.

All good fun, just be safely prepared and let someone know your itenerary.

I never was a rock hound.  My younger brother was.  We have a lot of quartz in this area, and he used to have boxes of quartz he'd collect.  I live in the Ouachita Mountains, and we have tons of Novaculite.  It's used to make whetstones (sharpening stones).  I have a friend that gathers it to shape and sell; he makes a few extra bucks every month doing it on his days off.  I've been to some of the lectures by geologists for the National Forest and the National Park where I live.  The geologic history in this area is really fascinating.

As for caving, you won't catch me in a cave unless there is a tour guide.  I just read too many stories and saw too many movies about cave ins and people getting stuck crawling through tunnels.  Spooky...no thank you.

and yet- just because you find it doesnt mean you OWN it.

The congress wants to ban all mining. There is also a bizzarre farm/garden law in the works.

I knew a guy who learned transmissions, cause no one else can do that.   knew a guy who became a mortician, because no one wants to do it.  A few in my family worked with the retarded because a portion of the workforce doesnt want to do it.

California is not a state to go TO...in 2009, it is a palce to leave.  Particularly with the gangs....

I was a rock hound from an early age and would find pretty rocks for the collection in the fish tank.  It's a wonder the goldfish survived.  lol In college I took classes in geology, oceanography and marine biology, all very informative and fun.

Not sure about spelunking, maybe will take a tour of some of those caves in the Ozarks with a group.

Using the terms "precious" and "semi-precious" to define gemstones has been abandoned by the gem trade, so actually, diamonds are neither.

I am always picking up rocks! I've got them all over the house and a few here at the office. One of the best presents from a submissive was a rock from her home state. It cost her nothing, but the fact that she went out hiking to find the perfect rock of it's type, then bring it to me. Totally awesome.

Hello all. I read and listen to everything I can by Bob Chapman. You can find his shows on youtube. The following info came out of yesterdays program.

1. deposits of peoples savings accounts has been leaving the banks in massive amounts, they have no idea where the money is going.

2. Chapmans contact in Europe- in the case a politician has told him there is talk of the US limiting the number of gold coins a person can own!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4E3LWLk2L4 listen at the 4 minute mark.

PA, I have never heard of this guy. I just googled him and found his website. I am not impressed.

I prefer to have cooler heads prevail. His does not appear to be one of them.

Study him harder.   I like you. I think you are a nice person.

Do you really believe the mainstream media?

That one of these bail outs will click and it all will be ok?

He is on radio 20 hours a week.  He also puts out a news letter.  He was in the CIA and also owned a brokerage house for many years.

The plunge protection team.  That is a nice way of saying a rigged market.

My coins are up 30-40%.   When we had the major bail out- I got interested.  So that is how many months?    6???

Lets put it this way, TELL me what the better plan is?   Anyone?  Maybe I am missing the better idea?   I am open to discover if I am....

The question is, how long are you planning on holding onto those coins? When will you sell them? Can you take them to the market and purchase food with them? The gas station for gas?

I know that the stores around here are not accepting gold coins. For me to purchase things, I have to have US currency. That would mean selling the gold coins. That means, I have to find someone that can and will buy them for the amount I think they are worth.......WHEN I need the money!

If you are thinking long term investment, grand. Maybe gold will stay high and you win, maybe not and you lose. It's a commodity like corn, beans, etc. I prefer to keep my hard earned paycheck in a currency I can actually use unless I will not need it for a nice long time. For long term investing, I am continuing to buy stock in companies I know are solid. There are a large number of undervalued ones right now.

I am also working hard to pay off all debt, car loan, mortgage, any lingering credit cards, etc.

The stock market is all wrong for me.  I fall for pump and dump  stocks.   So no more.  The DOW will be close to 3800 by years end. For long term there could be foreign commodity stocks that would be a good investment.  I cant think of any American company that is a good investment.  Asia has potential but I dont know enough about it to back it up with money.   So to someone of modest means as I, the stock market is not an option.  Paper is paper is paper.

The end plan?   Well- 500 ounces of silver will buy an average house. (in a few years)   When I say buy- I mean no mortgage.

It is possible to sell off coins as you need the funds.  If anyone wants the link, drop me an email.    I dont get how this silver seems to be a male thing.   On the silver board I was on- much more males on it then females. Ild say 97-3.

40%/90% coins are still legal tender and could be used for gas/food in a pinch.   That would easier work then to take in a stock certificate and try to haggle it.

Other then silver and gold, food, would be maybe even more important.   Tho food spoils.

So perhaps coins are not a good choice for some people.  But for many people they are.

Silver is preferable in that- I will buy that off of ebay.  But I wont buy gold off of ebay.

Funny thing, I am stumped by food storage.  There are ways to do it.  5 gallon buckets with Mylar and oxygen absorbers..I learned food storage wrong.

So- per your advice;  I disagree that stock works for me.  I agree that food is an item that matches my goals.

I hate living on this busy street- and hope in a few years I can get out of here.  The coins hopefully will be my way out.

Keep us posted how that all works out for you.

For me, all of that, "end of the world as we know it!!!!" is too reminiscent of the same shit I heard and saw, in the late 70's and early 80's.
