Not aimed at the OP:

If you don't have anything to contribute to the debate, you can always cook up crooked statistics, and get cheap headlines to generate misdirected outrage!

Buried in the article: "In addition, 4 per cent of the therapists and psychiatrists questioned said they would be prepared to try to change a patient's sexuality if asked."

So fewer than 1 in 20 would try to "cure" homosexuality. Where does the 1 in 6 come from? Why, surprise, surprise, there's no clear explanation! So if a therapist currently in his 60's gave a whirl at "curing" somebody who felt their attractions were inappropriate, in, say 1975, was polled, and admitted he did so, he's the 1 in 6? What does that have to do with the consensus among therapists on the "treatability" of homosexuality?

Compare the actual figures in the article to the quote from "lead researcher" Professor Michael King, from University College London: "...it is surprising that a significant minority of practitioners still offer this help to their clients."

4% is a significant minority? Bull. He has deliberately rolled the larger number of therapists who have tried to talk someone out of their sexual identity with those are currently willing to do so.

Mark Twain: "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."

aravain -> RE: One in six therapists 'has tried to cure homosexuals (3/28/2009 9:03:06 AM)

~FR~

If you read it, the article DOES say that 1 out of every 6 therapists *ASKED* HAD tried to cure homosexuality. That says nothing about whether or not they currently think it's possible.

And when you're talking about the mental wellbeing of people... yes, 4% IS a lot.

Hey-

If doling out chocolate would work at attracting straight women- I should be surrounded.  My truffles draw rave reviews- but dammit, chocolate doesn't have the affect of Miller Lite in those damn beer commercials. We've all heard of beer goggles, why aren't there chocolate goggles? I don't know if chocolate would work any better on gay guys...

Seeing as how I quoted the difference in language between "had tried" and "would try" in my post, it's pretty clear I understood that.

There is a relatively low bar to calling one's self a "therapist," which is why the article does not discuss "psychologists" or "psychiatrists." I'm sure there is a reason why professionals with medical degrees are not cited by the authors of the study (eg. they didn't want to dilute their propaganda).

The authors are trying to inflate the influence of a disreputable, tiny minority, of self-proclaimed therapists in order to inflate the actual incidence of homophobia in the mental-health community, doubtlessly to promote self-aggrandizing, and most likely, counter-productive funding and programming. The likelihood of being randomly referred to somebody so drastically out of step with the current consensus on homosexuality is far remoter than 4%, people of this ilk are actively marginalized by the mainstream. One would have to already hold negative views on the matter, and seek out these quacks.

Remind me to never ever see a psychiatrist.  I prefer to indulge in my "illness" as much as I can!!!

Many years ago- mom threw me in the car- took me to be cured.   While there,  the psychiatrist told her that I did not need to be cured.  LOL.   My aunt was with and the expression on her face was priceless.

Lets suppose I do get cured.  Honestly- I am not tuned in to all the heterosexual signals- the do and dont when in mixed company.  Like I realize some of the signals,  But I dont know enough of them to not get an azz kicking over it.

Then I see the trouble heterosexual people have in life.   So it isnt as if- cured- life then is bliss.   :-)

LOL, PaHunk, you need to be tied down to a bondage table and have a fat girl sit on your face, that'll "cure" you!

I don't see where you're coming up with that 'alterior motive' for this study/survey.

The researchers *ABHOR* the practice and want to stop it in ALL forms. If anything, they're trying to SQUASH this minority, rather than increase the homophobia within the field.

I was actually surprised that the number was as LOW as 4%, personally, what with the many advertisements (and even PEOPLE) I've seen for these ex-gay, and homosexuality 'curing' movements and groups.

It doesn't matter if they're psychologists or psychiatrists. They're therapists, which IS what matters. People ARE going to some of these 'therapists' to 'cure' themselves.

My mother's STILL trying to get me to get help through 'jonah.org' or something similar. These groups are more prevalent than you think.

That's cause there ain't no cure.

There is no cure because there is nothing that needs to be cured except in the minds of religious zealots who don't count.

Maybe I am reading wrong but the therapists were asked by the patients to help reduce their attraction to the same sex. What is wrong with trying to help with the patients wishes?

More likely adolescents being dropped of for reprogramming by parents. It's fairly repugnant. In the event that an adult made such a request, the responsible and professional response would be to try to help the patients come to grips with themselves, rather than feed their delusion that some sort of therapy/brainwashing will cause them to decide to like the opposite sex.

i think the exgay groups are great, i mean if you live in a small town and are sick of the bar sceen it can be a great place to met a guy[;)]

VanessaChaland -> RE: One in six therapists 'has tried to cure homosexuals (3/29/2009 12:35:27 AM)

A qualified mental health pro (in my opinion a therapist does not count) would not go along with whatever halfcocked hair brained idea that a patient suggests. Since "degayifing" people is impossible, they are just chugging along with the patients request, in order to make money. If they were so stupid as to really believe that you can change ones sexual orientation, they should lose whatever "license" they got from whatever Cracker Jacks box or "college".

The same would apply if the patient wanted to be another race, or taller, or a cow or any other idea. Its the responsibility of the pro to state what is and what is not feasible. :)

So where are you on sexual reassignment surgery?  Its been possible for years and I've gathered the results have been gratifying to some folks.  Don't know what the long terms prognosis is-

Race- ask a biologist to define which genes make up race and he/she'll laugh.  Race is a human construct.

On a somewhat sobering note- I suspect it's quite possible to do aversion therapy similar to what was used in A Clockwork Orange to condition a reflex so that homosexual behavior would become repugnant.  Just because most of the current people doing this "therapy" are charlatans doesn't mean that somebody with some brains could  figure out something that would actually work.  Should we allow people to make this choice?   We already allow people's religious beliefs to dictate the medical treatment that their children recieve or more accurately don't recieve (lack of immunizations, blood transfusions, etc.) what's to stop them from demanding their children to be brainwashed in this fashion?

aravain -> RE: One in six therapists 'has tried to cure homosexuals (3/29/2009 9:39:36 AM)

Hmm, usually the problem isn't making the behavior repugnant, but that they still can't make the urges/desires go away.

That and they can't change the fact that they're not attracted to females.

This one time, they made me dress up in polyester golf shirts with tube socks and
gladiator sandals, then tied me to a John Deer tractor and forced me to take the
Cleveland Heterosexual Obstacle Course For The Inadvertently Man-dicapped.

However, I just kept carving large penises in the otherwise rugged terrain, so they
caved and bought me a do-it-yourself Clone Your Willy And Create A Dildo
molding set in hopes self satisfaction would rid society of my evil, repugnant desires.

I invited them to join me in the application process of saving their penis for prosperity.
However, I substituted concrete for the silicone, and needless to say, they are all
now rock hard. Gotta have a sense of humor in a world lacking civility.

Aravain

I suspect that for the people who think that "curing" people of homosexuality, the primary goal is to alter the behavior.  Whether or not the human is happy or has desires is far less relevant.  Today, we can chemically neuter people- that's probably good enough for the misguided souls who seek to be "cured" of something that isn't a disease.

"This one time, they made me dress up in polyester golf shirts with tube socks and

Gack- if they did that to me- I'd have sex with a dead billy goat....what a fiendish torture!  Oh, the humanity....

aravain -> RE: One in six therapists 'has tried to cure homosexuals (3/29/2009 11:43:47 AM)

That's what the people curing view as a cure...

the people 'cured' don't, though. That's mildly more important to me.

They make claims that you will live a perfectly 'normal' (whatever that is) heterosexual life. That's where they're just flat-out lying.
